Advances in Parkinson's Disease (APD) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/apd.2013.24019
Abstract: One of the predominant effects of PD is alteration of motor skills, which leads to compromised posture and physical balance. Aquatic physical therapy, performed in a heated pool, can serve as one of intervention alternatives for PD carriers. Aim: To analyze the effects of the Halliwick Concept hydrotherapy in acquisition of motor skills in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. Methods: A clinical, qualitative method was used to evaluate 7 volunteers (59.85 ± 7.92 years of age, both male and female), who were in II and III stages of PD according to the Hoehn & Yar Scale. The participants were evaluated in the start and end of the interventions phase, and then the evaluation was conducted interventions in a heated pool (32?C - 34?C) twice a week, each session lasting approximately 30 minutes, totaling 10 sessions. The Halliwick Principles’ 3-phase 10-point methods were used for acquisition of aquatic motor skills. Results: They indicate an improvement in their ability to float in prone and supine positions (P = 0.04*) and longitudinal rotation in the bipedal position. Conclusion: The activation of motor control improved the motor skills of the participants.

Abstract: The structure and spatial distribution of a Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville (Leguminosae) population, were studied using a sampling area of 0.50 hectares, divided into 50 plots of 10m x 10m, located inside the cerrado of the Biological Reservation and Experimental Center of Mogi Gua u, S o Paulo State, Brazil (22o15’-16’S, 47o08’-12W). The population was inventoried during three surveys. The total number of plants measured and mapped were 250 (census 1), 297 (census 2) and 287 (census 3). These individuals were categorized into 15 height classes. The distribution of the individuals classed according to size evidenced an inverted “J”. The indexes of relative density denoted that the classes between 11 and 60cm height were the best represented in the sample area. The population presented an aggregate spatial distribution pattern and the degree of aggregation was lower than that found among taller plant classes. The population spatial distribution maps denote the occurrence of associated groups, especially young individuals, and the considerable spacing among adults indicates the effects of density-dependent factors affecting plant survival. The population of S. adstringens sampled seems to have a specific dynamics within the community in which they are inserted, being subject to natural disturbances that occur sporadically, and which in a way have a moderate impact in the sample area.

Abstract: Nowadays, there is a great interest in the research and the production of functional foods, such as isoflavones. Which present proven action on the prevention of health problems, such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Considering the importance of soybeansupplements standardization, this study aimed identifying and quantifying the isoflavones in products sold at different pharmacies. Isoflavones samples were acquired in six different pharmacies specialized in the production of phytotherapic medications. The isoflavones were extracted, quantified and identified in HPLC. None of the samples, from different pharmacies, presented the isoflavones content presented on the label, i.e., 20 mg. In relation to the isoflavones profile, the highest levels found were of daidzein, with up to 66.8 } 0.09 êg, being the lowest levels the ones of genistein. It is necessary, therefore, the adoption of methods for thestandardization and characterization of the raw materials used by different pharmacies. It would assure the isoflavones content, once they are essential for the effects prescribed by the professionals in the medical area.
