Abstract: in 1996/97, 45 single cross supersweet maize hybrids, from a complete diallel cross involving ten inbred lines (s4) and their parents, were evaluated at pesqueira and vitória de santo ant?o, brazil. a látice 7 x 8 design was used with two replications for each location. the general (gca) and specific (sca) combining ability effects and heterosis value were estimated for husked ear weight (hew), unhusked ear weight (uew) and ear rate (er = uew/hew x 100). the general and specific combining ability effects were significant (p<0.01) for all characteristics. inbreds l5 = 76.5%; l7 = 71.2% and l4 = 69.6% (pesqueira); l4 = 70.8%; l5 = 69.4% and l7 = 65.3% (vitória de santo ant?o) showed the highest (er), and the highest gca effects at both locations. the best crosses for er were: l4 x l8 = 74.9% (pesqueira) and l7 x l8 = 70.3% (vitória de santo ant?o), with the highest sca effects at both locations. for er, heterosis values related to parental mean ranged from -20.19 to 24.01% (pesqueira) and -18.02 to 16.76% (vitória de santo ant?o). heterosis values related to the higher yielding parent ranged from -23.52 to 22.99% (pesqueira) and -22.05 to 12.03% (vitória de santo ant?o).

Abstract: to identify single crosses hybrids of supersweet maize of high seed germination in 1996/97, 45 single crosses and 10 inbred lines were evaluated (s4), from a complete diallel cross, at pesqueira and vitória de santo ant?o, brazil. a lattice 7 x 8 design was used with two replications, per each location. the general (gca) and specific (sca) combining ability effects were estimated for the trait stand. in the combined analysis of variance, lines, hybrids and both gca and sca effects were significant (p<0.01). the interactions of gca and sca (p<0.01) were significant with the locations. for the individual analysis, the mean squares estimates for lines, hybrids, gca and sca were also significant (p<0.01). the relative magnitude of gca and sca mean squares indicated predominance of additive gene effects. the average mean seed germination were of 40.4% and 56.5% at pesqueira and vitória de santo ant?o, respectively. the hybrids l3 x l6 and l3 x l7 at pesqueira and l1 x l10 and l3 x l5 at vitória de santo ant?o, were the most favorable single crosses of high quality seed having good field emergence potential.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the degree of tolerance and sensibility to the salinity of genoty,pes of rice (oryza sativa l.) during the vegetative phase of the plant. the experiment was lead under greenhouse conditions at ipa (empresa pernambucana de pesquisa agropecuária), in 1996. twelve genotypes of rice had been evaluated, being ten tolerant and two sensible ones to salinity in the vegetative development stadium. the randomized blocks design were performed into three repetitions of factorials arrangements (twelve genotypes x four levels of nacl). results had evidenced variability existence among the genotypes of rice, in the specific population, for tolerance and sensitivity to the salinity. samples pr492, pr504, cna8250, cna8262 and cna8267 can be considered tolerant to salinity, while the genotypes cna8270, cna8258, cna8269, pr475 and pr477 are sensible to salinity of soil during the vegetative phase.

Abstract: Para identificar híbridos simples de milho superdoce de elevado poder germinativo, foram avaliados em 1996/97, 45 híbridos simples e 10 linhagens S4, originados de cruzamento dialélico completo, nos municípios de Pesqueira e Vitória de Santo Ant o (PE). O delineamento utilizado foi "látice"7 x 8 com duas repeti es por local. Foram estimados os efeitos da capacidade geral (CGC) e específica (CEC) de combina o para o caráter. A análise conjunta de variancia mostrou alta significancia de linhagens, de híbridos e capacidades combinatórias. Houve intera o significativa de CGC e CEC (P<0,01) com os locais. Nas análises individuais, as estimativas dos quadrados médios de linhagens, híbridos e das estimativas da CGC e CEC foram também significativas (P<0,01). A magnitude relativa da CGC e CEC mostraram predominancia dos efeitos gênicos aditivos. A percentagem média de emergência foi de 40,4% e 56,5% em Pesqueira e Vitória de Santo Ant o, respectivamente. Em Pesqueira, os híbridos L3 x L6 e L3 x L7 foram os mais favoráveis em aumentar o valor do caráter, enquanto que em Vitória de Santo Ant o os melhores foram L1 x L10 e L3 x L5.

Abstract: Em 1996/97 foram avaliados em Pesqueira e Vitória de Santo Ant o (PE), 45 híbridos simples superdoce obtidos de um cruzamento dialélico completo entre dez linhagens S4 e suas linhagens parentais. O delineamento utilizado foi látice 7 x 8 com duas repeti es por local. Foram estimados os efeitos das capacidades geral (CGC) e específica (CEC) de combina o e os valores de heterose para peso de espiga com palha (PECP), peso de espiga sem palha (PESP) e rendimento de espiga (REND = PESP/PECP x 100). Os efeitos de CGC e CEC foram significativos (P<0,01) para todos os caracteres. As linhagens com maiores REND foram L5 = 76,5%; L7 = 71,2% e L4 = 69,6% (Pesqueira); L4 = 70,8%; L5 = 69,4% e L7 = 65,3% (Vitória de Santo Ant o), e estas também apresentaram os maiores valores para os efeitos da CGC nos dois locais. Os cruzamentos mais produtivos (REND) foram L4 x L8 = 74,9% (Pesqueira) e L7 x L8 = 70,3% (Vitória de Santo Ant o), que também apresentaram os maiores efeitos da CEC nos dois locais. Para o caráter REND, os valores de heterose em rela o à média dos pais variaram de -20,19 a 24,01% (Pesqueira) e de -18,02 a 16,76% (Vitória de Santo Ant o). Em rela o ao pai mais produtivo os valores variaram de -23,52 a 22,99% (Pesqueira) e de -22,05 a 12,03% (Vitória de Santo Ant o).

Abstract: the objective of this work was to identify the required p dose and efficient arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (amf) to promote growth of seedlings of sweet passion fruit. an experiment was carried out at the greenhouse, in a randomized design with a factorial 2x4x4: two soil conditions (disinfected or not), four treatments of inoculation (inoculated or not with gigaspora albida, scutellospora heterogama and native amf from the rhizosphere of sweet passion fruit plants), four doses of available p (mehlich-1) (8 - natural soil -, 12, 16 and 20 mg dm-3), with four replicates. native amf promoted growth of seedlings after 30 days of inoculation, while other fungi stimulated plant development after 45 days. quadratic models indicated maximum values of plant height in soil, with p values estimated between 15.40 and 16.07 mg dm-3 in disinfected soil and 14.85 and 15.60 mg dm-3 in non disinfected soil, obtained in treatments with s. heterogama and g. albida, respectively. higher spores density and mycorrhizal colonization were observed in treatments with these fungi, comparing with the native amf. growth of sweet passion fruit seedlings can be improved by mycorrhization with selected amf, with reduction of time spent on seedling production.
Respostas fisiológicas em mudas de maracujazeiro amarelo (Passiflora edulis Sims. f. flavicarpa Deg.) inoculadas com fungos micorrízicos arbusculares e submetidas a estresse hídrico

Abstract: the effect of the symbiosis between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (amf) and plants of yellow passion fruit, submitted to water stress during seven days, 40 days after the inoculation, was studied in an experiment using a completely randomized design, with factorial arrangement and the following treatments: (a) with and without water stress; (b) inoculation with gigaspora albida, gigaspora margarita or glomus etunicatum and uninoculated control; (c) two inoculum levels: 200 and 400 spores/plant, with four replicates. the soil was a red yellow podzol (3 mg of p/dm3). measurements of diffusive resistance, transpiration and leaf temperature were taken from four leaves of each treatment, and the growth was evaluated by height, leaf area and total dry biomass. data were analized by the ntia statistic program. development of inoculated plants was not affected by the stress while uninoculated plants did not grow under any condition. non mycorrhizal seedlings did not show wilt symptoms, probably due to their small size. in general, seedlings associated to amf and submitted to stress showed higher values of diffusive resistance and leaf temperature and lower transpiration rates than those not stressed. among the inoculated seedlings, those associated with g. etunicatum presented lower diffusive resistance and higher transpiration only when compared with g. albida. in general, mycorrhization was beneficial to passion fruit seedlings, increasing growth even under water stress.

Abstract: genotypic, phenotypic and environmental correlation between agronomic characteristics and thrips tabaci resistance were determined in 62 half-sibs progenies of onion valeouro ipa-11 cultivar. the experiment was conducted under field conditions in juazeiro, bahia state, brazil, with evaluations at 48; 69 and 93 days after transplant (dat). commercial bulb yield (pbc) presented genotypic correlation with leaf length (cf) (0,63**); leaf number (ntf) (0,74**); damaged leaf number (nfd) (0,74**); commercial bulb average weight (pmbc) (0,54**); commercial bulb yield (%bc) (0,61**); and non-commercial bulb yield (%bnc) (-0,63**). genotypic correlations were observed in the number of ninfas of t. tabaci between two fully developed central leaves (ninfa), at 69 dat and central leaf angle (ang) (-0,76**); ntf (0,46**); %bc (-0,35**); and yield of unproductive plants (%i) (0,39**). these correlations indicate that lower ninfa numbers occur in plants with lower ntf and higher ang. lower ntf plants, on the other hand, have higher ang (-0,92**). never thelessntf correlated positively with pbc, pmbc (0,45**) and %bc (0,43**). positive genotypic correlations between nfd and pbc, pmbc (0,40**) and %bc (0,51**), imply that this population presents resistance through tolerance.

Abstract: the variability of yield characters associated to thrips tabaci (thysanoptera: thripidae) resistance was estimated in 62 half-sib progenies of onion cv. valeouro ipa-11. the controls were the cvs. valeouro ipa-11 and the parentals roxa ipa-3 and belém ipa-9. the experiment was conducted in field conditions, in juazeiro, bahia state, brazil, following a complete randomized block design, with three replications. the estimates of the parameters from the population of valeouro ipa-11 demonstrated high enviromental influence for all characters. the highest estimates of herdability and expected gain with 20% of selection pressure were, respectively, 35.74% and 10.39% for the production of commercial bulbs (pbc), 31.33% and -24.48% for percentage of unproductive plants (%i), 33.92% and -16.80% for production of non commercial bulbs (pbnc) and 30.31% and 13.18% for percentage of non commercial bulbs (%bnc). these characters seem to indicate better possibility of genetic progress with the selection. the characters mean infestation of immature t. tabaci on the two completely developed inner leaves (ninfa) present herdability of 18.24 and 21.34% and expected gain with 20% of selection pressure of 18.24 and -11.22% at 48 and 69 days after transplanting (dat), respectively, indicating superior gains in selections at 69 dat. although ninfa were 31.96 insects, 45.16% of valeouro ipa-11 progenies demonstrated pbc values above the average, suggesting that tolerance may be the resistance mechanism.

Abstract: species and density of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi indicated for increasing growth of yellow passion fruit seedlings were investigated in an experiment using a completely randomized design, with factorial arrangement of 5 x 3 + 1, considering five amf species (gigaspora albida, gigaspora margarita, acaulospora longula, glomus etunicatum and scutellospora heterogama), three inoculum densities (200, 300 and 400 spores/plant) and a non-inoculated control with three replicates, in fumigated soil with 3 mg dm-3 of p and ph 5.3. there was no significative interaction between density of inoculum and the amf species in relation to host growth. however, shoot dry biomass and leaf area reached maximum values in the treatment with 300 spores/plant. seedlings inoculated with g. albida, g. margarita and g. etunicatum presented higher growth, colonization, and spores density in the rhizosphere than those associated with a. longula and s. heterogama, whose growth was similar to the control. the inoculation of passion fruit with three of the tested amf promoted plant vigour, and reduced the period of time for transplanting to the field.
