Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2005000800014
Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate bioeconomic efficiency of f1 dorper x santa inês lambs for meet production. performance of f1 dorper x santa inês lambs in raising and fattening phases was analyzed. the production phase of lambs was realized in native pastures ("caatinga") and the finishing phase was in confinement. the ewes were supplemented during the last 50 days of pregnancy and the first 30 days of lactation. lambs were weaned at 70 days of age, divided into three lots, confined and fed elephant grass (pennisetum purpureum) ad libitum, and concentrate in the proportion of 1.5%, 2.5% and 3.5% of live weight, respectively. lambs sex did not have significant influence on birth weight, as well as on weaning weight and weight gain until weaning. in production and confinement phases, lambs of single births were superior to double births ones considering these variables. linear effect was significant for weight and for weight gain, at 30 and 50 days of confinement. the three inclusion levels of concentrate were economically viable. gross margins of live weight for each kg of lamb produced were r$ 0.26 kg-1, r$ 0.30 kg-1 and r$ 0.36 kg-1 of live weight to concentrates of 1.5%, 2.5% and 3.5%, respectively. the best economics results were obtained when the concentrate level was 3.5% of live weight.

Abstract: the kinetics of ruminal fermentation of total carbohydrates (tc) and neutral detergent fiber (ndf) of false fruit from five clones of cashew tress: cp 06, cp 09, cp 76, cp 1001, brs 189 was evaluated through semi-automated in vitro gas production technique. the pressure readings and the volume measurements were accomplished after 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 21, 27, 33, 39, 48, 60 and 72 h. for the determination of the tc and ndf degradation, the residue was quantified after 72 h of incubation. the cumulative gas production curves were adjusted through models proposed by france and gompertz for tc and ndf, respectively. for tc, difference between cp 09 and brs 189 was found for potential gas production (vf). the cp 1001 was the substrate that presented the shortest colonization time. the cp 09, cp 1001 and the cp 06 presented fermentation rates slightly higher in relation to cp 76 and brs 189. the existence of two peaks was observed in the gas production rate, for 6 and 21 h. the brs 189 presented lower degradation at 72 h. for the ndf, cp 09 resulted in higher vf and the cp 06, cp 1001 and o brs 189 presented the highest gas production rate. the cp 09 presented had higher microbial efficiency. the cumulative gas production was higher for cp 1001. the false fruit of the cashew trees clones evaluated presented potential for use in the feeding of ruminants due to their good quality, from the fermentative point of view.

Abstract: the objectives of this study were to analyze the morbidity and mortality profile in elderly patients hospitalized in two teaching and two non-teaching hospitals in rio de janeiro, brazil (municipal planning area 2.2) in 1999, and to compare in-hospital mortality rates adjusted for differences in profile. data were obtained from the national hospital database of the unified national health system (sih/sus). the logistic model included the variables age and primary diagnosis to calculate risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality rates. hospital admissions of elderly patients (n = 7,584) represented 29.3% of a total of 25,928 hospitalizations that took place in these units. senile cataract (7.8%) was the most frequent cause of hospitalization, followed by prostate hyperplasia (4.7%), congestive heart failure (2.9%), and complete atrioventricular block (2.8%). non-teaching hospitals presented in-hospital mortality rates higher than teaching hospitals even after adjusting for case profile differences with regard to age and primary diagnosis. the use of sih/sus databases and the risk adjustment methodology represent an alternative for exploratory analysis of healthcare outcomes.

Abstract: twenty crossbred male santa inês sheep were assigned to a completely randomized block design to evaluate the effects of feeding dried cashew pulp (dcp) on performance, digestibility of nutrients, and nitrogen balance. it was also of particular interest to study the economical viability of adding dcp to diets of feedlot sheep. diets were isonitrogenous and contained ground tifton 85 hay (cynodon spp), corn, soybean meal, salt, and one of the following levels of dcp: 0, 10, 20, 30 or 40%. increasing the dietary levels of dcp had no significant effect on intakes of dm and cp and also on feed conversion. neutral detergent fiber intake was increased while an opposite effect was observed for weight gain by adding dcp to the diets. for average daily weight gain is recommended the inclusion of 30% of dcp in the diet because of the greatest economical return rate. inclusion of dcp in diets of finishing feedlot sheep reduced nitrogen retention and negatively affected total tract digestibilities of dm, om, cp, ndf and adf.

Abstract: the biological nitrogen fixation (bnf) of desmanthus pernambucanus (pigeon bundleflower), macroptilium martii and m. lathyroides (wild bushbean), grown in soils from the semiarid region of paraíba, manured or not, was evaluated in a pot experiment. nodule number and biomass, n content and the proportions of fixed n (%ndfa) were estimated, using the natural abundance methodology and buffel grass as a reference plant. the legume plants nodulated abundantly in all three soils, manured or not, except when grown in fluvic neosol without manure. the number and biomass of the nodules increased with manure. the bnf was high in all three species and soils: in most of the plants resulting in %ndfa above 50% and reaching 85%. using these data, a rough estimate of the fixation capacity of these species in the field indicates amounts of 10 to 30 kg ha-1 of n, taking planting and yielding usual densities. the lowest %ndfa and fixed quantities were obtained in plants growing in the regolithic neosol and they increased with manure application. among the species, bnf was least important to d. pernambucanus. neither the proportion nor the fixed quantities were explained by any of the nodule variables measured (number, biomass or biomass/nodule).

Abstract: The transport of oil and its derivates are done, mostly, by pipeline. The time to detect leaks has to be short for pre-venting big disasters in the nature and decreasing losses for industries. The techniques available for leak detection vary from visual inspection to the use of computational techniques such as mathematical modeling. This paper aims to study the fluid dynamics of two-phase flow (water-oil) in the pipe with leakage. The equations of the mass and momentum conservation are numerically solved by using the ANSYSCFX commercial code with the aid of a structured mesh of a horizontal pipe with three holes of leaks. The Eulerian-Eulerian model was adopted considering the oil as continuous phase and water as dispersed phase, and constant fluid properties. With profiles of pressure and volume fraction along the time in the pipe, the influence of leakage on the single-phase (oil) and two-phase (water-oil) was evaluated.
