Netto-Ferreira, André L.;Oyakawa, Osvaldo T.;Zuanon, Jansen;Nolasco, José C.;
Neotropical Ichthyology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-62252011000400008
Abstract: lebiasina yepezi, a new lebiasininae with a conspicuous color pattern, is described. the new species is endemic of the headwaters of the rio negro, rio branco, and rio orinoco in the serra parima-tapirapecó mountains, at the border of brazil and venezuela. the new species is readily distinguished from all other lebiasininae by the presence of four black longitudinal stripes on the trunk, and the triangular shaped dorsal surface of the mesethmoid, lacking lateral projections. the unusual color pattern is contrasted with those of other lebiasinin, as well as members of the pyrrhulinin genus nannostomus. a close relationship between lebiasina yepezi and the gran sabana (venezuela) species is suggested based in color pattern features. the present contribution corresponds to a further refutation of the type locality of l. intermedia, as suggested on its description, since lebiasinins, except l. bimaculata, l. boruca, and l. festae, do not occur in low land waters.

Abstract: orthotopic liver transplantation has become the treatment of choice for familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy. the aims of this study were to evaluate the renal complications post orthotopic liver transplantation in familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy and their impact. we retrospectively studied 185 recipients who underwent 217 orthotopic liver transplants. mean age 3 6.8±9.5 years, 59% males, 14.3% with renal dysfunction pre orthotopic liver transplantation. mean follow-up 3.6±3.7 years. thirty-two patients died. univariate and multivariate analysis were performed, and p<0.05 was considered significant. acute kidney injury occurred in 57 patients and renal replacement therapy was needed in 16/57. in multivariate analysis, acute kidney injury was correlated with development of chronic kidney disease (p<0.001). relating to development of chronic kidney disease, 23.5% had progress to stage 3, 6% to stage 4 and 5.1% to stage 5 d. according to spearmen correlation, risk factors for chronic kidney disease development were age (p<0.001), renal dysfunction pre orthotopic liver transplantation (p<0.001) and acute kidney injury post orthotopic liver transplantation (p<0.001). mortality was correlated with age (p<0.001), retransplantation need (p=0.004), renal dysfunction pre orthotopic liver transplantation (p<0.001), acute kidney injury post orthotopic liver transplantation (p=0.04), and chronic kidney disease stage 5 (p<0.001). using binary regression, mortality was correlated with chronic kidney disease development (p=0.02). in conclusion, familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy patients are disposed to renal complications that have a negative impact on the survival of these patients

Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2005000600027
Abstract: in recent decades the brazilian population has undergone intense changes in its nutritional conditions, especially with an increase in obesity. according to the national survey on health and nutrition in 1989, 32.0% of adults were overweight. however, distribution of the problem is not homogeneous. the highest prevalence occurs among poor women in the southeast. understanding this apparent paradox requires the search for approaches capable of overcoming simplistic interpretations about eating practices. thus, the objective of this study was to understand obesity combined with poverty, focusing beyond economic determinants on constraints of a cultural and symbolic nature. from this perspective, the study analyzed the daily lives of poor women who used a municipal health center and resided in the rocinha slum in rio de janeiro. the results showed the complexity of the relationship between obesity and poverty. cultural and material life aspects as well as different concepts of eating and the body proved to be fundamental elements for the analysis of the multiple facets of obesity in brazil.

Ferreira, Vanessa A.;Magalh?es, Rosana;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007000700019
Abstract: in recent years, health promotion has been introduced as a promising strategy for the public health field. the current study is intended to link nutrition into the recent debate on health promotion, analyzing the role of nutritionists in this process. given the complexity of the brazilian nutritional situation due to the nutritional transition currently under way in the country, the health promotion proposal points to both new perspectives and challenges for eating and nutrition. new demands in academic training and the nutritional care model tend to foster a search for partnerships, innovation in eating practices, and nutritional education aimed at the achievement of nutritional citizenship.
Práticas alimentares cotidianas de mulheres obesas moradoras da Favela da Rocinha (Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil)
Ferreira,Vanessa Alves; Magalh?es,Rosana;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232011000600036
Abstract: this article presents conclusions of research conducted at ensp/fiocruz, as part of a master's degree course. one of the objectives of the research to investigate the eating habits of women living in the rocinha shantytown (rio de janeiro, rj, brazil) from a socio-anthropological perspective. the results revealed that the eating habits of the group were repetitive, with few variations in the menu consisting basically of rice, bean, sugars and fats. we further observed the rejection of industrialized and canned products. this food consumption pattern seems to conform to brazilian food culture revealing the preservation of the national identity based on feeding habits. consequently, it is necessary to set aside presuppositions regarding the relationship between food consumption and obesity, especially with respect to the predominant idea of changes in diet with the incorporation of a "modern" or "western" diet that prevail in studies in the field of nutrition in brazil. in this sense, we signaled the need to reassert a multidimensional approach for studies about food and nutrition in the country. this proposal involves overcoming restricted conceptual outlooks and the creation of new avenues of investigation.

Wanderley,Emanuela Nogueira; Ferreira,Vanessa Alves;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232010000100024
Abstract: obesity is a disease characterized by the excessive accumulation of corporal fat, which produces deleterious effects to the health. there is consent in the literature that its etiology is multi-factorial, involving biological, historical, ecological, political, social-economical, psychosocial and cultural aspects. in that sense, this article's objective is to talk about the multi-factorial character of obesity, involving the wide variety of environmental and genetic factors implicated in its etiology, starting from secondary studies of literature revision in the main bases of data and specialized libraries. nowadays, obesity has been considered the most important nutritional disorder in the developed countries and the ones in development, due to the increase of its incidence. the approach of the genetic, metabolic, psychosocial, symbolic, and cultural aspects in addition to the lifestyle allowed to base obesity as a plural illness, and showed the necessity to create public politics with multidiscipline and inter-sectorial actions, that value the partnership between government and civil society, in the prevention and combat of obesity and the promotion of health, making possible the community's participation in that process, through responsibility and self care.

Ferreira,Vanessa Alves; Magalh?es,Rosana;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232006000200025
Abstract: the current article presents conclusions of a developed research in ensp/fiocruz, as part of a master degree course, about the relation between poverty and obesity from the symbolic structure seizure around the body. the research had as a goal examining the perception about the body of a fat women group living in a carioca slum, from the use of the qualitative methodology, using the technique of the semi-structured interview. the final researches in this work showed that among the rocinha women was in force proper standards of body that tied little esthetic attributes. the examined women noticed the obesity in a different way. it was felt through clinical symptoms as for example: "leg pains", "back pains", "lack of breath", "less disposition". it was still possible to observe that the fat body was sometimes valorous among the group, tied to work and the social condition. these results lead us to believe that the obesity assume proper outlines in the different contexts and social groups. for this reason we believe to be necessary the fulfillment of new research dates about the obesity theme in brazil.
