Biodiversidade: fonte potencial para a descoberta de fármacos
Barreiro, Eliezer J.;Bolzani, Vanderlan da Silva;
Química Nova , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422009000300012
Abstract: in economic terms, biodiversity transcends the boundaries usually given to conventional industries because it is a valuable source of biological and chemical data of great use to drug discovery. certainly, the use of natural products has been the single most successful strategy in the discovery of novel medicines, and most of the medical breakthroughs are based on natural products. half of the top 20 best-selling drugs are natural products, and their total sales amounted to us$ 16 billions shows the importance of natural products, which is evidenced by the new chemical entities (nce) approved by regulatory authorities around the world in the past decade. recently, the approval of the alkaloid galanthamine as a medicine to treat alzheimer's disease shows that natural compounds from plants will continue to reach the market. the huge biological diversity of the brazilian biomes, by its ability to generate new knowledge and technological innovation can be a fantastic alternative as raw material for drug discovery.
Chemical study of leaves of Chrysophyllum marginatum (Hook. & Arn.) Radlk (Sapotaceae)
Silva, Viviane Candida da;Lopes, Márcia Nasser;Bolzani, Vanderlan da Silva;
Química Nova , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422006000300016
Abstract: the fractionation of the antioxidant ethyl acetate extract obtained from the dried leaves of chrysophyllum marginatum afforded six substances identified as: a-amirin, gallic acid, myricitrin, quercitrin, (-)-epigallocatechin and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-o-gallate. this study contributes to the knowledge of the secondary metabolites produced by one more species of the brazilian flora, until now not investigated. moreover, this study allowed the identification of three substances with antioxidant activity previously detected in this species.

A new antifungal phenolic glycoside derivative, iridoids and lignans from Alibertia sessilis (vell.) k. schum. (Rubiaceae)
Silva, Viviane C. da;Bolzani, Vanderlan da S.;Young, Maria C. M.;Lopes, Márcia N.;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532007000700017
Abstract: a new antifungal phenolic glycoside, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl-1-o-b-d-(5-o-syringoyl)apiofuranosyl-(1?6)-b-d-glucopyranoside (1), together with four known iridoids, geniposidic acid (2), geniposide (3), 6a-hydroxygeniposide (4) and 6b-hydroxygeniposide (5); two lignans, (+)-lyoniresinol-3a-o-b-d-glucopyranoside (6), (-)-lyoniresinol-3a-o-b-d-glucopyranoside (7); and two phenolic acids, chlorogenic (8) and salicylic acids (9) and d-manitol (10), were isolated from the ethanolic extract of the stems of alibertia sessilis. structures of 1 and of the known compounds were determined by spectroscopic analysis. all compounds isolated were evaluated for their antifungal activities against two phytopathogenic fungi strains cladosporium cladosporioides and c. sphaerospermum by direct bioautography.
Antioxidant flavonol glycosides from Nectandra grandiflora (Lauraceae)
Ribeiro, Alan Bezerra;Silva, Dulce Helena Siqueira;Bolzani, Vanderlan da Silva;
Eclética Química , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-46702002000200004
Abstract: the bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethanol extract from nectandra grandiflora leaves led to the isolation of two flavonol glycosides which inhibited the bleaching of b -carotene on the tlc assay. both compounds had their molecular structures elucidated by means of extensive use of uni- and bidimensional nmr techniques and were identified as 3-o-b -rhamnosylkaempferol and 3-o-b -rhamnosylquercetine.

New biflavonoid and other flavonoids from the leaves of Chimarrhis turbinata and their antioxidant activities
Cardoso, Carmem L.;Silva, Dulce H. S.;Castro-Gamboa, Ian;Bolzani, Vanderlan da S.;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532005000800008
Abstract: a new biflavonol, named chimarrhoside (1), and eight known flavonol glycosides (2-9), were isolated from the leaves of chimarrhis turbinata. their structures were established on the basis of 1d and 2d nmr experiments as quercetin-3-o-rutinoside (2), kaempferol-3-o-rutinoside (3), kaempferol-3-o-a-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1?6)- b-d-galactopyranoside (4), quercetin-3-o-a-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1?6)- b-d-galactopyranoside (5), 6-hydroxy-rutin (6), kaempferol-3-o-d-galactopyranoside (7), kaempferol-3-o-d-glucopyranoside (8) and kaempferol-3-o-a-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1?6)- a-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1?4)-b-d-glucopyranoside (9). in addition, catechin (10) and catechin-(4a?8)-catechin-procyanidin b-3) (11) were isolated. the crude extract, fractions and isolated compounds were evaluated for their antioxidative properties using an autographic assay based on b-carotene bleaching on tlc plates, and spectrophotometric detection by reduction of the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (dpph) free radical. flavonoids 2, 5, 6, 10 and 11 displayed strong free radical scavenging activity, when compared with the standards bht and rutin.

Pauletti, Patrícia Mendon?a;Bolzani, Vanderlan da Silva;Young, Maria Claudia Marx;
Química Nova , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422003000500003
Abstract: chemical investigation of arrabidaea samydoides resulted in the isolation of the flavone chrysin; five triterpenes: lupeol, ursolic acid, 3b,16a-dihydroxy-urs-12-ene, uvaol, and erythrodiol; and two sterols: sitosterol and stigmasterol. the structures of these compounds were established by spectroscopic analysis. this paper deal with the first phytochemical study of arrabidaea samydoides.
