Abstract: information is contradictory as to the time brachiaria brizantha seeds can remain mixed with the npk fertilizer without causing poorly formed stands. therefore, the objective of this research was to study the effect of contact times of npk granular fertilizer (04-14-08 rate) with seeds of this forage on physiological quality (germination and vigor). a completely randomized design with four replicates was employed. an analysis of variance was conducted and the means were compared by tukey test at 5%. polynomial regression analyses were also performed, and equations were fitted. a significant effect was observed in all variables. the water content and electric conductivity of seeds increased as contact time with the fertilizer increased, while decreases were observed in germination percentage, first count, emergence, and emergence velocity index. a linear behavior was observed for the variables. consequently, seeds can be mixed with npk fertilizer as long as seeding is performed immediately afterwards, thus reducing damages to the physiological quality of the forage seeds (germination and vigor). in practice, it is recommended that b. brizantha seeds should be mixed with npk at quantities that can be seeded within 12 hours from mixing, at most.

Abstract: this study aimed to determine the effect of 10 contact times of a granular triple superphosphate chemical fertilizer with brachiaria brizantha, cv. marandu seeds on seed physiological quality (germination and vigor). contact times were: 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours. a completely randomized experimental design was used, with four replicates, under both laboratory and nursery conditions. in all variables studied, a significant effect of the treatments employed was observed: as contact time with the fertilizer increased, the phosphoric acid residue from the fertilizer probably had a direct and negative effect on germination and vigor, as observed by germination, first count, water content, electric conductivity, emergence, and emergence velocity index results. therefore, in order to obtain an adequate population of plants, the forage seeds can be mixed with the triple superphosphate since seeding is performed immediately, reducing physiological quality losses.

Abstract: The majority of investigations of the epidemiology of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have focused on highly developed nations with a low prevalence of tuberculosis. In contrast, the Para state of north Brazil represents an area of high tuberculosis prevalence and increasing NTM incidence. Toward the goal of understanding the dynamics of infection by all Mycobacterium species, we report patient characteristics and the identification of NTM strains isolated from sputum samples from patients that were residents of Para, a state in the Amazon region, Northern of Brazil, over the period January 2010 through December 2011 (2 years). The 29 NTM patients comprised 13.5% of positive mycobacterial cultures over the 2-year period. A major risk factor for NTM pulmonary disease was previous tuberculosis (76%). Further, the average age of NTM patients (52 years) was significantly higher than that of tuberculosis patients (39 years) and more were female (72.4% vs. 37.4%). Unlike other Brazilian states, NTM pulmonary patients in Para were infected with a different spectrum of mycobacteria; primarily the rapidly growing Mycobacterium massiliense and Mycobacterium simiae complex.

Abstract: this article reports on a two-year experience with professional practice simulations (pps) as a teaching/learning process in the undergraduate medical course at the federal university in sao carlos, brazil. this medical school's pedagogical approach is based on the constructivist conception of learning and the premise that learning is not reproducing reality, but being capable of elaborating a personal representation of reality and its contents. from this perspective, after experiencing simulated situations, students are encouraged to re-signify their previous scope of information, building new significant knowledge. in this educational unit (pps), students interact with simulated patients and have the opportunity to learn by doing and analyzing their mistakes. while students reflect on their errors, they can identify the gaps in their knowledge and cognitively substantiate their skills. teachers interact with students as evaluators, facilitators, or consultants. this pedagogical strategy can be a powerful tool for developing clinical skills.

Abstract: Maximum anaerobic power was improved by acute creatine supplementation (10.5?%), but it was accompanied by a 2.4-fold increase in pro-oxidant free iron ions in the plasma. However, potential iron-driven oxidative insult was adequately counterbalanced by proportional increases in antioxidant ferric-reducing activity in plasma (FRAP), leading to unaltered lipid peroxidation levels. Interestingly, the FRAP index, found to be highly dependent on uric acid levels in the placebo group, also had an additional contribution from other circulating metabolites in creatine-fed subjects. Our data suggest that acute creatine supplementation improved the anaerobic performance of athletes and limited short-term oxidative insults, since creatine-induced iron overload was efficiently circumvented by acquired FRAP capacity attributed to: overproduction of uric acid in energy-depleted muscles (as an end-product of purine metabolism and a powerful iron chelating agent) and inherent antioxidant activity of creatine.

Abstract: the authors carried out a study of children with progressive muscular dystrophy of duchenne type (dmd), giving special attention to physiatrical follow-up, having in mind that the practice of exercises has been debated very much in the specialized literature. the goal of this study is to try to settle the limits for the utilization of kinesitherapy which should be applied only in specific situations, such as: after skeletal muscular trauma or when the respiratory system is at risk. in this situation the physiatrical procedure would be to restrict physical activity, with early use of wheelchairs and the exclusion of the use of orthoses for orthostatism. dmd, at present, has been considered a result of duplication (60%), deletion (5 to 6%) or point mutations at gen xp21 (zatz, 1994), that codifies a protein called dystrophin ( hoffman et al., 1987). dystrophin is a cytoskeletal sarcolemmic protein that constitutes about .002% of the total protein of the muscle, present in skeletal fibers concentrated in muscle tendinous joints, which supplies mechanical reinforcement to the surface of the membrane during stretching and shortening physical activity. this protein is absent in dmd cases, wherefore, the sarcolemma undergoes a segmentary necrosis losing its contractile property during eccentric and concentric physical activity. the importance of physiatrical follow-up for dmd patients is to avoid deformities and tendon shortening, to ameliorate the patient's quality of life, to provide respiratory assistance and general couseling to members of the patient's family. the objective of this study is to try to clarify the risks and possibilities of kinesitherapy applied to dmd cases.
