The lived experiences of male on male rape: a review article: research
V. Roos, W. Katz
Health SA Gesondheid , 2003,
Abstract: The phenomenon of sexual assault upon males has been largely overlooked by society. Gender stereotyping, taboos, misconceptions and reluctance to acknowledge the possibility of male on male rape, particularly outside institutions, have all contributed to the scarcity of investigative findings. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of literature regarding male rape, supported by two male survivors' lived experience of rape in noninstitutionalised settings. An open-ended question was formulated and used to elicit rich descriptions of the male survivors' experience of rape. The research indicates that rape is experienced as an unexpected and intrusive violation, which at once impacts on all dimensions of the survivor's existence, ultimately disrupting his entire manner of being in the world. In the wake of the rape experience, the survivor is left with what appears to be a permanent struggle to adjust again. Apprehension about sharing the experience appears to be grounded in the survivor's real or imagined fears of revictimisation, a subjective sense of shame and the perceived stigma attached to being a survivor. The research indicated a desperate need of survivors that their experiences be heard and unconditionally understood. The post-rape struggle of the survivors appears to be exacerbated in the absence of any supportive relationships. This has important implications for society at large and specifically for those within the helping professions.

Astrophysical and Cosmological Probes of Dark Matter  [PDF]
Matts Roos
Journal of Modern Physics (JMP) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jmp.2012.329150
Abstract: Dark matter has been introduced to explain substantial mass deficits noted at different astronomical scales, in galaxies, groups of galaxies, clusters, superclusters and even across the full horizon. Dark matter does not interact with baryonic matter except gravitationally, and therefore its effects are sensed only on the largest scales. Although it is still unknown whether dark matter consists of particles or of a field or has some other nature, it has a rich phenomenology. This review summarizes all the astrophysical and cosmological probes that have been used to produce evidence for its existence. The breadth of the subject does not permit details on the observational methods (the reference list then helps), thus the review is intended to be useful mainly to cosmologists searching to model dark matter.
Optimal control of entangling operations for trapped ion quantum computing
V. Nebendahl,H. Haffner,C. F. Roos
Physics , 2008, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevA.79.012312
Abstract: Optimal control techniques are applied for the decomposition of unitary quantum operations into a sequence of single-qubit gates and entangling operations. To this end, we modify a gradient-ascent algorithm developed for systems of coupled nuclear spins in molecules to make it suitable for trapped ion quantum computing. We decompose unitary operations into entangling gates that are based on a nonlinear collective spin operator and complemented by global spinflip and local light shift gates. Among others, we provide explicit decompositions of controlled-NOT and Toffoli gates, and a simple quantum error correction protocol.
Five Factor Model of Personality and the Use of Multiple Internet Functions  [PDF]
John Magnus Roos
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2017.510010
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore how the Five Factor Model of Personality relates to the use of multiple internet functions. The personality traits included in the Five Factor Model of Personality are Openness to Experiences, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. This study builds on survey data from a sample that is representative of the Swedish population. In total, 3400 surveys were distributed with a response rate of 50 percentages (N = 1694). Our results indicate that use of multiple internet functions are positively related to Openness to Experiences and Extraversion, and nega-tively related to Neuroticism.

An exploration of personal, relational and collective well-being in nursing students during their training at a tertiary education institution
KD Watkins, V Roos, E Van der Walt
Health SA Gesondheid , 2011,
Abstract: The well-being of nursing students has become crucial because of the multidimensional challenges that nursing professionals have to deal with. A community psychology framework was adopted in this study. The aim of the research was to explore the different dimensions of well-being as described by nursing students. A purposive and availability sample was used to gather qualitative data (interviews, focus groups and visual presentations) during 2008 and 2010 from first-year nursing students, which were thematically analysed. The emergent themes were grouped according to personal, relational and collective well-being. The findings indicated that nursing students’ personal well-being was undermined by a lack of autonomy, feelings of uncertainty, and feelings of pressure and disillusionment with the nursing profession and their training. Personal well-being was also described in terms of dispositional optimism and the need for a sense of purpose and deeper meaning. Relational well-being was expressed by the nursing students in relation to their friends, family and lecturers. The different relationships were important sources of comfort and encouragement. Their collective well-being was threatened by a challenging work environment, lack of role models in clinical settings as well as incongruence between theoretical training and practical application. Recommendations for improving the different dimensions of well-being are suggested. ‘n Gemeenskapsielkunde raamwerk is in hierdie studie gebruik.
