Abstract: mini blast furnaces are reactors that traditionally produce pig iron from charcoal using granular ore with some agglomerate substitution. this work proposes metallic burden replacement by self-reducing agglomerates and reutilization of cleaned top gas injected into the shaft of the mini blast furnace where charcoal or small coke from a large blast furnace are used as the reducing agent. this technology was evaluated using a previously validated, blast furnace computational code based on the transport phenomena. several scenarios combining the charging of the furnace with self-reducing agglomerates and reutilization of cleaned top gas were simulated. based on the simulation results, it can be concluded that up to 45% of the metallic burden could be replaced by self-reducing agglomerate combined with the reutilization of the top gas. the best conditions indicated an increase in productivity of around 8% with charcoal as the reducing agent. results showed that decreases of 30% and 40% of the reducing agent could be achieved for operations with charcoal and small coke, respectively.

Pinheiro, Ulysses;
Kriterion: Revista de Filosofia , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-512X2001000200004
Abstract: leibniz says in various occasions that infinite analysis is the key concept to explain the compatibillity of determinism and contingence. it is not evident, however, why the analogical use of a mathematical concept, such as infinitesimal calculus, could solve this ontological problem, nor in what sense one should understand such analogy. the aim of this paper is to elucidate these two points.

Abstract: at first sight, actions and omissions do not share the same properties. some authors hold that an illustration of this assimetry is causality: actions must be explained as the instantiation of a causal relation between an agent and certain facts, while omissions seem to have to be explained as the absence of causal relations between a person and the relevant facts. in this paper, i will show that actions and omissions are, contrary to appearances, simetrical regarding the attribution of genuine causality.
A "doen?a dos eruditos" e a triangularidade da ideia de triangulo: uma análise do conceito de espa?o no tratado de Hume
Pinheiro, Ulysses;
Kriterion: Revista de Filosofia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-512X2010000100004
Abstract: hume's analysis of the concept of space in the treatise of human nature commits him to a series of positive assertions on its nature and on the content represented by its idea: space is finitely divisible, and its idea is composed of colored or tactile non-extended points, which leads him to conclude that the idea of space is itself spatial. these assertions seem to commit hume to an idealistic theory of space. in this paper, i propose to elucidate hume's arguments for his positive theses and to examine his commitment to idealism through a characterization of the nature of treatise's propositions.

ABCD. Arquivos Brasileiros de Cirurgia Digestiva (S?o Paulo) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-67202011000100014
Abstract: introduction: surgical treatment of rectal cancer has undergone great technical refinement after total mesorectal excision. the possibility of laparoscopic approach still remains controversial. thus, an updated review of the matter is relevant to help to guide physicians in surgical treatment. method: it was done an extensive review of papers on databases available through medline / pubmed, lilacs and scielo crossing the following keywords: colorectal cancer, laparoscopic surgery, surgery. conclusion: to date, there still remains a matter of controversy whether the treatment of rectal cancer should be routinely performed by laparoscopy. there are no published data that support the achievement of minimally invasive total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer treatment outside the research protocol, notably a lack of survival rates and local recurrence with at least five years of follow-up.

Revista Paulista de Pediatria , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-05822009000200005
Abstract: objective:malnutrition is a frequent complication among children with renal diseases. short stature is the main clinical sign. the aim of this study is to analyze the nutritional status of children with renal disease using anthropometry. methods: this cross sectional study enrolled 21 (43%) boys and 28 (57%) girls with age ranging from 5.3 to 19.5 years. they were divided in three groups based on their creatinine clearance (ml/min/1.73m2): group 1, >37 (n=19); group 2, between 15 and 37 (n=9) and group 3, <15 (n=21). weight and height were obtained in order to calculate the following indexes: weight/age (w/a), height/age (h/a) and body mass index (bmi); then, z scores were obtained. malnutrition was defined as z scores below -2. anova test was used to compare groups. results: there were no differences among the groups for anthropometric data. 19 patients (38.8%) presented short-stature and 22 (44.8%) low-weight. z scores were similar among groups relative to w/a, h/a and bmi values. w/a z score values were: group 1: -1.9±1.8; group 2: -2.6±3.1 and group 3: -2.5±1.4 (p=0.47). h/a z scores values were: group 1: -1.5±1.2; group 2: -2.3±1.8 and group 3: -2.1±1.1 (p=0.18). the calculated bmi z scores were: group 1: -1.2±1.4; group 2: -1.7±3.9 and group 3: -1.6±1.3 (p=0.82). 19 children presented short stature and 22 presented low weight. there were no differences between the studied groups. conclusions: the sample presented high prevalence of malnutrition. even considering the disease stage, there were no nutritional differences between the studied groups.

Abstract: the experiment was conducted from october 1997 to april 1998, to evaluate the nonstructural carbohydrates (sc), total nitrogen (tn) and roots weight, of the pasture of coastcross - 1 (cynodon dactylon (l.) pers), under four levels of dry matter residue (dmr: 1978, 2130, 2545 and 3857 kg dm/ha), under continuous stocking (put and take). a completely randomized design, with two replications, was used. sc and tn contents were analysed on roots and stem base according to dry matter residue levels (dmr) and time (days) of sampling. sc in the roots and percentage of tn in the stem base were not influenced by levels of dmr and sampling period. the highest sc in the stem base was found in the residue of 2545 kg dm/ha, and was observed an adaptation to the pasture condictions as time progressed. sc was higher in the stem base compared with the roots. tn percentage in the roots decreased until the leavel of 2545 kg dm/ha. dry matter production of roots increased as dmr increased, but declined as the sampling period progressed.

Abstract: the experiment was conducted to evaluate, the forage losses and litter accumulation, in a pasture of tanzania grass (panicum maximun jacq cv. tanzania) managed in different sward height levels. the studied levels of sward heights (treatments) were: 29.8, 32.0, 47.1, 51.5, 57.9, 62.7, 72.6 and 80.0 cm, in a completely randomized design and two replications. the litter accumulation rate, litter accumulation and forage losses were similar in all heights. the percentage of senescent forage in the plant canopy was influenced on a quadratic way by the sward height levels. the results show that the litter accumulation and forage losses were high, with average dm of 38.9 kg/ha.day and 2179 kg/ha of dm, respectively. due to the possibility to reduce the pasture persistence and plant structure deteriorate, it is not recommended to utilize tanzania grass pastures, in levels sward height near or equal of 20 and 80 cm, under continuous stocking rate.
