Acta Scientiarum : Animal Sciences , 2008,
Momba a). The experiment was conducted from December/2002 to April/2003, with the objective of evaluating the effects of different phosphate sources (Yoorin magnesium thermophosphate, Simple Superphosphate +Triple Superphosphate, Gafsa natural phosphate, and control – no phosphate application) as a function of the evaluation months, on leaf area index (LAI), tiller weight (P) and number, percentage of total leaf and stem (%) and leaf blade/stem ratio of Momba a grass (Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Momba a). The experiment design was a randomized block, with three replications. Phosphate sources influenced (p < 0.05) the weight and number of tillers, while Yoorinò had less weight per tiller, and the Gafsa phosphate obtained the lowest number of tillers. There was a period effect (p < 0.05) for all evaluated variables. The lowest LAI was observed in April, and the highest in February, showing adaptation to a new reproductive cycle. There was little phosphorous influence on tillering; however, soluble phosphate increased the weight of tillers, while the period increased leaf presence.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate protein supplementation on theperformance of steers grazing on Momba a grass and receiving chopped sugar cane tops at a level of 0.80% of live weight (dry matter (DM) basis), during the dry season. Forage availability and quality of the experimental pasture were also evaluated. Thirty-two Nellore steers, weighing 300 kg (. 25.80) of initial live weight, eight per treatment, were used. The statistical design was completely randomized and each steer group was allocated to one of four paddocks (1.125 ha paddock-1). All steers received a protein supplement at 0.40% of live weight (DM basis) and the four treatments consisted of the following four crude protein (CP) concentrations in supplements: 12.5, 25.0, 37.5 and 50.0% CP (DM basis). Average forage mass availability and green leaf blades availability were 10,069 and 2,195 kg of DM ha-1, respectively. Average CP, neutral fiber detergent (NDF) and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) in forage mass were 6.87, 62.63 and 49.80%, respectively. Average daily gain was 0.61 kg steer-1 day-1 and these results show that the strategy of feeding steers in pasture, with chopped sugar cane tops (0.80% LW) and protein supplement with 12.50% CP (0.40% LW), during the dry season, allows high gain per area (363 kg live weight ha-1).

Abstract: an experiment was conducted to study the effects of allowance of ammoniated rice straw on the voluntary intake (vi) and digestibility of dry matter (dmd), and on the intake, excretion, digestibility and n balance. fifteen adult sheep, males, castrated, with average weight of 63.8 kg, individually kept in metabolic cages, were used. the levels of straw fed to the animals were: 1.5; 3.0; 4.5; 6.0 and 7.5% of live weight. a supplement (200 g/animal/day of corn) was used to supply available energy to the ruminal microorganisms. there was no effect of the level of straw offer on dmd, excretion of n in the urine, digestibility and balance of the n, and the average values were 58.6%, 8.23 g/day, 44.7% and 0.29 g/day, respectively. there was linear effect of the offer level on the intake and excretion of n in the feces. the dm and dmds intake linearly increased up to 3.0 and 4.3%, respectively. these allowance levels produced 23.9 and 37.4% of orts, respectively. based on the intake of dmd above the maintenance requirements (0.12 digestible energy mcal/kgpv0.75), to maximize the animal performance per unit of straw fed is recommended to supply about 123.05 g/kgpv0.75 of ammoniated rice straw. when the objective is just to meet the maintenance requirement of the animals, levels lower than 123.05 g/kgpv0.75 are accepted. higher levels are not recommended, therefore there would be waste of straws without increment in the animal response.

Abstract: this trial was carried out in luiziana, northwest of paraná, from june to october 2000. twenty-four animals with 223 kg of initial body weight and nine months old, from two different genetic groups, ? red angus ? nellore (15) and ? marchigiana ? nellore (9), were used. animal performance was evaluated, under grazing conditions of coastcross (cynodon dactylon (l.) pers) and three types of supplementation: grazing oat + ryegrass pasture (or) for four hours/day; 1.2% of body weight (bw) supplement (s); 1.2% of bw supplement + lasalocid (sl). the experimental area consisted of four padocks: three of coastcross, with 7.35 ha of total area; and one of oat (avena strigosa schreb) and ryegrass (lolium multiflorum lam), with two ha. pasture accumulation and quality were evaluated. after 112 days of experimental period, average daily gain did not show any difference between s and sl (1.063 kg and 1.026 kg, respectively), but both were superior than or (0.856 kg). lasalocid addition to supplement did not improve animal performance. these results show that even during the dry period, supplementation (1.2% of bw), with or without lasalocid, or winter pasture, can result in high liveweight.

Abstract: the objective of this experiment was to use n-alkane to estimate accurately and precisely the botanical composition of dietary forage in sheep fed different proportions of arachis pintoi koprov & gregory cv. amarillo and brachiaria decumbens stapf (0, 15, 30, 45 e 60% of arachis pintoi). twenty lambs were used in a completely randomized design with 10 days for diet adaptation and 5 days for fecal collection. both fecal composites and hay samples were analyzed for n-alkane concentration. dietary forage proportions were estimated from measured concentrations of n-alkanes in feces and forage by the least square sum of deviations. multivariate analyses and canonical variables were used to select the most discriminatory alkane with the obtained data submitted to analysis of variance. means were compared using the "t" test and the adjustments of the estimated values in relation to the observed were done by linear regression. the canonical variables indicated that the alkanes c35, c33, c30, c31, c27, c29 and c36 had the greatest discriminatory potential. therefore, the use of all these alkanes in the calculation was more accurate and precise (p <0.05) than the use of a combination of 2 or 3 alkanes to estimate the proportion of a. pintoi in the diet. the best adjustment of the regression was also found for these alkanes. the "t" test for the intercept of the equation (a) and the regression coefficient (b) showed that a = 0 and b = 1, indicating that the estimated values are equivalent to the observed. the multivariate analysis appears to be an important tool to select n-alkanes for diet evaluation.
