Abstract: Species of the Trichogramma genus are among the most important ones for biological control. The objective of this research was to evaluate parasitism potential of two species of Trichogramma on eggs of Anagasta kuheniella through life fertility table, at temperatures between 15oC and 35oC. These species were collected in the State of Espírito Santo parasitising eggs of the avocado defoliator Nipteria panacea. Trichogramma pretiosum and T. acacioi showed adequate reproductive potential between 15oC and 35oC which indicates possibilities of using them in biological control programs in avocado plantations.

Abstract: Visando estudar o efeito da bactéria entomopatogênica Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) sobre fêmeas adultas de Trichogramma pratissolii e sua progênie, este trabalho foi realizado com diferentes isolados de Bt e Bt kurstaki misturados ao alimento fornecido para o parasitóide antes de parasitar ovos de Anagasta kuehniella. Para tanto, suspens es de seis isolados de Bt E-3, E-10, E-15, E-16, E-19, E-20 e o Bt kurstaki foram misturados em gotícula de mel (1:1), como fonte de alimento e mel puro como testemunha, e, em seguida, foram oferecidos simultaneamente cartelas com ovos do hospedeiro para o parasitismo. Foram utilizadas 20 repeti es por tratamento. O experimento foi mantido em camara climatizada a 25 ? 1masculineC, UR 70 ? 10% e fotofase de 14h. Foram avaliados os parasitismos diários, totais e acumulados; sobrevivência; emergência e raz o sexual da progênie. Os tratamentos n o afetaram o parasitismo, raz o sexual e a longevidade, porém em alguns tratamentos (E-3, E-10, E-16 e E-20) foi observado efeito indireto sobre a emergência da progênie, o que implicaria a necessidade de mais libera es massais do parasitóide para alcan ar os resultados esperados. Por outro lado, a acelera o do parasitismo verificada em todos os tratamentos sugere que adultos de T. pratissolii, quando submetidos à press o de algum fator externo tendem a parasitar o mais rápido possível para assegurar a sobrevivência da progênie. Portanto, a combina o Bt + T. pratissolii pode favorecer a atua o do parasitóide em campo, principalmente em casos em que é necessária uma rápida redu o dos níveis populacionais da praga.

Abstract: this research studied the thermal requirements of trichogramma pretiosum and t. acacioi (hymenoptera: trichogrammatidae), parasitoids of nipteria panacea (lepidoptera: geometridae), with eggs of the alternative hosts anagasta kuehniella (lepidoptera: pyralidae) and sitotroga cerealella (lepidoptera: gelechiidae) aiming to use these natural enemies in biological control programs of this pest in avocado orchards. t. pretiosum needed 151.83 and 160.04 degree-days, above threshold of 10.70 and 10.75°c, while these values were 158.50 and 155.46 degree-days, above threshold of 10.67 and 10.46°c for t. acacioi when exposed to eggs of a. kuehniella and s. cerealella, respectively.

Abstract: the objective of this investigation was to study trichogramma pretiosum and t. acacioi (hymenoptera: trichogrammatidae), parasitoids of the avocado defoliator nipteria panacea (lepidoptera: geometridae) on the eggs of the alternative host anagasta kuehniella (lepidoptera: pyralidae) aiming to use them for biological control of this pest in avocado orchards. the cubic model presented better adjustment for duration of the life cycle of t. pretiosum and t. acacioi with the host a. kuehniella which shows that development rate of these species increases with temperature within the range tested. the number of individuals of both trichogramma species emerged per egg from this host was higher than one. the quadratic model was significant for viability of t. pretiosum and t. acacioi. this parameter was more affected by extreme temperatures and higher emergence rates of adults of both parasitoids species occurred at temperatures of 20, 25 and 30°c.

Abstract: this work was carried out to detect at laboratory the possible side-effects provoked by bacillus thuringiensis (bt) strains on egg parasitoid thichogramma pratissolii and its progeny. six strains of bt e-3, e-10, e-15, e-16, e-19, e-20 and bt kurstaki were assayed in honey drop to stimulate the feeding of the parasitoids in each treatment (1:1) and pure honey as check treatment and offered simultaneously displays with eggs of the host alternative anagasta kuehniella. the experiment was maintained in a climatized chamber at 25 ± 1oc, rh 70 ± 10% and photofase of 14hours. the survival, daily parasitism, accumulated parasitism and total parasitism and also the progeny's emergence and sexual ratio were analyzed. bt isolates did not affect parasitism, sexual ratio and longevity, but some of them (e-3, e-10, e-16 e e-20) affected parasitoid progeny. in field conditions this could imply in more parasitoid liberations to the expected results. otherwise, parasitism acceleration verified in all treatments suggest that when t. pratissolii adults pass on some extern pressure (stress) they parasitize as soon as possible to assure progeny survival. the interaction bt + t. pratissolii may increase the parasitoid preformance in the field, mainly when a rapid decrease of pest population is desirable.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the parasitism capacity of trichogramma pretiosum riley and t. acacioi brun, moraes and soares (hymenoptera: trichogrammatidae) in eggs of the alternative host sitotroga cerealella (olivier) (lepidoptera: gelechiidae) aiming to use both species in biological control programs of nipteria panacea tierry-mieg (lepidoptera: geometridae). the parasitism rhythm and total parasitism of these parasitoid species were affected by the temperature with higher values during the first 24 h of their life. parasitism period was longer for t. pretiosum and t. acacioi at the lowest temperature.

Abstract: the results of a field research on the knowledge and use of plant resources in a rural community of the semi-arid of pernambuco state, brazil, were presented. the use of 75 species, reported by 30 informants for various purposes, specially as medicinal and edible, are described and commented. to point out the most important species, a quantitative analysis was performed taking into account the degree of agreement among the answers. among the plant species cited, we can highlight spondias tuberosa arr. cam., anacardium occidentale l., amburana cearensis (arr. cam) a.c. smith, sideroxylon obtusifolium (roem. e schult.) t.d. penn., lippia alba (mill.) brow, opuntia ficus-indica mill., anadenanthera colubrina (vell.) brenan var. cebil (griseb) altschul, psidium guajava l., hymenaea courbaril l. and myracrodruon urundeuva (engl.) fr. all. in addition, we comment on the temporal availability of several resources and the means of management observed.

Abstract: in this paper we synthesized information on the traditional botanical knowledge of a rural community in the municipal district of alagoinha, pernambuco state, as part of an ethnobotanical project developed in the area. we used a variety of research methods, including floristic surveys in agroforestry systems (homegardens) and in the natural vegetation. people identify and use over 108 plant species distributed in 10 categories: food, medicinal, wood (for fuel, construction etc), domestic use (technology), forage, poison, insect repellent, ornamental, shade and mystic. this work discusses the ways by which the forest resources are used and managed, and the implications for conservation of the caatinga.

Abstract: objective: to provide recent guidelines to reduce the incidence of diarrheal diseases. we discuss the definition, clinical aspects, pathophysiology, diagnosis, management, and prevention of persistent diarrhea. sources: electronic search of the medline database, google search. summary of the findings: acute diarrhea may be caused by a variety of agents, including bacterial, viral, and protozoan pathogens. the top priority in treatment of diarrhea is replacement of fluid and electrolytes losses, particularly at the acute stage, and, under certain circumstances, eradication of the enteropathogenic agent. on the other hand, treatment of persistent diarrhea should focus on prevention and management of food intolerance and malnutrition. conclusions: promotion of breastfeeding, adequate interventions in the treatment of acute diarrheal episodes, introduction of safe dietary strategies for prevention of malnutrition, and improvements in sanitation and hygiene conditions, including sewage and clean water, are essential measures for the reduction of diarrheal morbidity and mortality rates in children under 5 years of age.
