Open Journal of Civil Engineering (OJCE) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojce.2016.65059
Abstract:
This article analyzes the major stakeholders in the Brazilian construction industry from the viewpoint of the companies in this sector, as well as how these organizations relate to their stakeholders with regard to the topic of sustainability in the construction. The study was based on the principle that the relationship with stakeholders is one of the foundations for the inception and continuity of activities toward sustainability. The findings of which show that the construction companies start the sustainability implementation process without the involvement of external stakeholders. This survey points out the difficulty faced by Brazilian construction companies in relating to their stakeholders. There is the perception that the customers and other actors do not value sustainability-oriented activities, but, at the same time, the relationship of the companies with these stakeholders is limited to disclosure of information. This characteristic of the industry reveals a need for sustainability projects that take into consideration, since their formulation, the stakeholders’ perceptions. The importance of this article lies in the recognition that, although the topic of sustainability is discussed at all levels, studies that examine how specific construction industries have been dealing with it are still rare.
Barriers and Challenges to the Sustainability Requirements Implementation in Public Procurement of Engineering Works and Services  [PDF]

Open Journal of Civil Engineering (OJCE) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojce.2017.71001
Abstract:
The environmental damage arising from the construction and engineering services was responsible for the appearance of several norms and resolutions regulating and directing the sector’s performance. In this article, we research how professionals with experience in public bids assess the difficulty degree of the implementation of those requirements and how they assess the environmental legislation regarding the protection and conservation of the environment, impact on costs, deadlines and the solution to environmental problems. The results show that industry professionals consider as “high” the level of difficulty to implement the addressed sustainability requirements, and that the Brazilian environmental legislation does not comply with its environmental protection role, increases the possibility of delays and costs of projects and services and hampers the emergence of solutions that could solve environmental problems.
Effect of Book Building and Auctions on the Exit Choice between IPO and Acquisition  [PDF]

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2015.54054
Abstract: The choice of exit mechanism between IPOs and acquisitions is an important decision faced by entrepreneurs and private equity investors. Although the decision to go public has been studied extensively, a firm’s choice between IPO and acquisition remains relatively unexplored. In this paper, we extend the existing literature by studying the effect of the type of IPO process on the decision. We introduce the two IPO methods: book building and auctions, and show how the parameters of the IPO methods affect the choice between IPOs and acquisitions. We show that for both the IPO methods, the probability of choosing IPOs decrease when cost to investors for acquiring information increases and fixed entry cost for investors increases. In the case of book building, we show that the probability of choosing IPOs decreases when the number of informed investors in the road-show increases. In the case of auctions, we show that the probability of choosing IPOs decreases when the certainty of the auction being successful decreases and the number of potential bidders increases. We analyse these extensions in two cases: when the firm is controlled by the entrepreneur and when the firm is controlled by the private equity investor. We also discuss important empirical implications which arise out of our theoretical model.
Organon 2010: is a medical textbook after 200 years still up to date?
Ubiratan Adler
International Journal of High Dilution Research , 2010,
Abstract: The question, proposed by the German Central Union of homeopathic Doctors, is the pivotal subject addressed in a series of lectures and discussions being held all over Germany in 2010, to celebrate the bicentenary of homeopathy ′s first medical textbook. Hahnemann ′s Organon of the Healing Art is the basis for classical homeopathy. Reading its 6th and posthumous edition is part of the education of 90% of the homeopaths, as indicated by a survey carried out at the 60th Homeopathic World Medical Congress (Berlin 2005). This might be odd to conventional doctors, used to read the latest editions of textbooks and journals, but Hahnemann ′s therapeutics seems to be ahead of his time, in that classical homeopathy can be at least as effective as current standard pharmacotherapy. For instance, classical homeopathy for children suffering from atopic eczema showed comparable results to conventional treatment in usual care. Moreover, randomized controlled double blind trials using the dynamization scale introduced by the 6th edition (fifty-millesimal or Quinquagintamillesimal dynamization and its products, the Q-potencies) showed that homeopathically individualized Q-potencies were superior to placebo for fibromyalgia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, and not inferior to the antidepressant fluoxetine in a sample of patients with moderate to severe depression. More studies using the clinical-pharmaceutical protocol of the Organon are of course needed, but so far its use by trained physicians have yield to challenging results, keeping up with what is recommended in most recent clinical textbooks for the treatment of some chronic diseases.

ABSTRACT Crisis management in communications, involving governments, corporations and individuals has become, in the last few years, an attractive option for communication professionals that come mostly from newsrooms. This article tries to show, based in the theoretical frameworks from political communications and political economy of the media, that what is at stake is a structural transformation of the public sphere, with consequences not only for the communications market, but for the political process and citizenship. Keywords: Crisis management; public sphere; political communications; political economy of the media.

Cyclo-Synchrotron Emission and Comptonization in Optically Thin Hot Accretion Flows
Rohan Mahadevan
Physics , 1995,
Abstract: Soft cyclo-synchrotron photons produced by thermal electrons moving in a magnetic field can be subsequently Comptonized to produce hard X-ray and $\gamma$-ray emission. An accurate determination of the amount of soft cyclo-synchrotron photons produced from such plasmas is clearly necessary. We present the complete solution to the cyclo-synchrotron problem. We calculate the emission produced by an isotropic distribution of thermal electrons moving in a magnetic field, for temperatures ranging from $5\times10^8$K to $3.2\times10^{10}$K. The applicability of the standard synchrotron formula is evaluated, and we provide convenient fitting functions for the emission spectra within this range of temperatures. We discuss how the Comptonized spectra, for various temperatures and optical depths, are affected by the new results.
