Synthesis, Antibacterial and Antifungal Investigations of Mn (Ii) Complexes with Schiff Bases Derived From 2 – Hydroxy – 1 – Naphthaldehyde and Some Aliphatic Diamines

Abstract: Schiff base ligands derived from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and some aliphatic diamines were synthesized and characterized. Each of the ligands was used to form complex with Mn (II). Solubility, elemental analyses and IR spectra were carried evaluated. Elemental analyses of the complexes for C, N and H revealed 1:1 metal to ligand ratio. Antibacterial and antifungal activities were determined. Disc diffusion method was employed for these antimicrobial assays against four pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Proteus sp. and Klebsiella pneumonae) and two fungi (Mucor sp. and Rhizopus sp.). It was found that the ligands and the complexes showed different activities against the isolates. The complexes showed higher activity than the free ligands.
Availability and Profit Optimization of Series-Parallel System with Linear Consecutive Cold Standby Units  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, we study availability and profit optimization of a series-parallel system consisting of three subsystems A, B and C in which A and B are cold standby. Subsystem A consists of linear consecutive k-out-of-n units while subsystems B and C consist of a single unit each. The system works if any of A or B and C work. The objective of this study is to maximize the steady-state availability and profit. To solve the optimization problem, different numbers of units for n = 2, 3, 4, 5 in subsystem A are considered. Explicit expressions for busy period of repairmen, steady-state availability and profit function are derived using linear first order differential equations. Several cases are analyzed graphically for n = 2, 3, 4, 5 to investigate the effects of various system parameters on availability and profit. The paper also presents graphical comparison for specific values of system parameters and finds that the optimal system configuration is when n = 5.
Synthesis, Physicochemical Characterization and Microbial Activity of N, N' Bis(2 -hydroxyl - 1-Naphthalyl)propylenediiminato Metal (II) Complexes

Abstract: The ligand, N, N’- bis(2 – hydroxyl – 1 – naphthalyl)propylenediimine wasprepared from the reaction of 2-hydroxy- 1 – naphthaldehyde andpropylenediamine. The prepared ligand was used to synthesize complexes withMn(II), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), respectively. Their solubility,melting/decomposition temperature, molar conductance, elemental analysis,infrared were carried out. Elemental analysis of the complexes for C, N and Hrevealed 1:1 metal to ligand ratio. The ligand and its divalent metal complexeswere screened for their antibacterial activity against E. Coli, Kleb, proteus andSalm. Sp. as well as Rhizopus sp. and Mucur sp. fungal isolates. It has beenfound that all the complexes show different activity on the isolates and that thecomplexes show higher activity than the free ligand.
Sensitivity of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing enterobacteriacea to Acalypha maccafeana extracts

Abstract: Powdered leaves of Acalypha maccafeana (L.) “Red Acalypha” was extracted with ethanol and fractionated with Petroleum ether, Chloroform and n-butanol using maceration technique. The extract and fractions were tested for antimicrobial activity against confirmed extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) producing enterobacteriaceae isolates of Escherichia coli, Citrobacter species, Enterobacter species, Klebsiella species, Proteus species and Salmonella species using disc diffusion method and microbroth dilution technique. The extract and fractions were further subjected to screening for phytochemical constituents. Sensitivity test results showed that ethanol extract, petroleum ether and residue fractions of red Acalypha were active against the isolates tested. The results of phytochemical screening indicated the presence of alkaloids, reducing sugars, steroids and tannins in both extract and fractions with flavonoids only present in ethanol extract and residue fractions of the plant.

Abstract:

BACKGROUND: Papillary carcinoma of the breast is a rare malignant tumour accounting for 1% - 2% of all breast cancers in women. Papillary carcinomas of the chest wall are always secondary to thyroid, thymus and ovaries. Other variants of breast cancer metastasizing to the chest wall have been reported. CASE: We report a 67-year-old woman presented to us with an ulcerated anterior chest wall mass of 1-year duration, bilateral axillary, supraclavicular and cervical swellings of 8-month duration. There was a history of breast lump which was noticed 5 years prior to presentation, no history of breast malignancy in the past and no family history of breast cancer. Examination revealed an ulcerated, nodular mass over the sternal angle which measured 14 cm × 12 cm

Phytochemical and Antibacterial Properties of Leaf Extract of Stereospermum kunthianum (Bignoniaceae)

Abstract: Phytochemical screening and studies on antibacterial activity of leave extract of Stereospermum kunthianum -a plant widely used by traditional medical practitioners in Northern Nigeria, were carried out on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella spp, Salmonella spp and Aeromonas hydrophila using agar well diffusion technique. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of sterols, coumarins, higher fatty acids and the absence of flavones aglycone and alkaloids in the leave extract. The activity of the extract was more potent at 30 mgml-1 with zone of growth inhibition against S. aureus (35 mm), Klebsiella spp (28 mm) and A. hydrophila (28 mm). The least activity was on P. aeruginosa (9 mm). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract was 2.09 mgml-1 on Klebsiella spp and S. aureus while 4.17 mgml-1 on Salmonella spp and A. hydrophila. Similarly, the minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) was 2.09 mgml-1 on S. aureus and 4.17 mgml-1 on Klebsiella spp. however, higher MIC and MBC of 16.67 mgml-1 were observed on P. aeruginosa. The spectra of activities displayed by the extract can be attributed to the presence of these phytochemicals which signifies the potential of S. Kunthianum as a source of therapeutic agents. Prevalence of extended spectrum β-lactamases (esbls) among enterobacteriaceae in murtala mohammed specialist hospital, Kano, Nigeria

Abstract: Confirmed variants of enterobacteriaceae isolated from 143 patients that attended Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Kano, were screened for extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) production using Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) breakpoint. Suspected ESBLs producers were subjected to confirmation using Disc Replacement Method (DRM). Standard discs of augmentin {AMC 30μg (Oxoid, England)}, ceftriaxone {AUF 30μg (Oxoid, England)} and ceftazidime {RP 30μg (Oxoid, England)} were used in the screening. Of the 143 isolates screened, 114 (79.72%) were Gram negative isolates belonging to the family enterobacteriaceae. Among the enterobacteriaceae isolates screened, the results of CLSI breakpoint test showed that 76 (66.7%) were ESBLs producers viz: Citrobacter spp. (3), Enterobacter spp. (2), E. coli (28), Klebsiella spp. (18), Morganella morganii (7), Proteus spp. (13), Salmonella spp. (1), Serratia spp. (1), Shigella spp. (2) and Yersinia spp (1). On subjecting the CLSI positive isolates to DRM, only 47 (41.2%) were confirmed ESBLs producers. These include; Citrobacter spp. (1), E. coli (20), Klebsiella spp. (12), Morganella morganii (4), Proteus spp. (8), Salmonella spp. (1) and Shigella spp. (1). ESBLs occur at an alarming rate among enterobacteriaceae isolates in Kano which calls for government intervention in the healthcare setting.
Causes of Bone Injuries and Patronage of Traditional Bone Setters in Maiduguri, Nigeria

Abstract: The study as an opinion survey identified Road Traffic Accidents (RTA), falling from height and gunshots/matchets as the causes of bone injuries in Maiduguri, Nigeria. Injuries sustained include fracture and dislocation. Structured Interview Schedule (SIS) and Focused Group Discussion (FGD) were the instruments used to obtain data. Population of study comprised of those involved in bone injuries between January and December, 2008. The sample size of 700 respondents was selected using stratified random sampling technique. Frequency distribution and percentages were employed to analyze data. Findings of the study revealed parents/families, relatives and friends as some of the sources of decision to patronize Traditional Bone Setting (TBS) while culture, phobia for hospitalization, no amputation and less expensive were some of the reasons adduced for patronage. Based on the findings, enactment of stringent laws/bye-laws or re-enforcement of existing ones (if any), counselling and enlightenment were suggested/recommended.
Effects of Planting Date and Weeding Regimes on Growth and Yield of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) in Sokoto, North- Western Nigeria

Abstract: Field experiments were carried out between 2007 and 2008 rainy seasons at the Teaching and Research Dry Land Farm of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, to investigate the effects of planting date (mid may, early and late June) and weeding regimes (weedy check, weeding once, weeding twice and weed free) on the growth and yield of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.). The experiment was laid out in a Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results obtained indicated that planting date had significant (P<0.05) influence on plant height, number of branches and number of capsules per plant, seed yield kg/ha and weight of 100 seeds. Weeding regime also significantly(P<0.05) affected plant height, weight of capsules and number of capsules per plant. KEYWORDS: Planting date; Sesame; Seed yield; Weeding regime
Minimizing Interference on GSM BCCH Channel Using Particle Swarm Optimization

Abstract: The easiest means of increasing capacity of a cellular network without compromising quality of service is through frequency reuse. However, frequency reuse usually results in certain additive and system-generated cellular types of channel interference (co-channel and adjacent channel). In this study, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm was employed to efficiently manage frequency reuse through a neighbour allocation list in order to reduce co-channel and adjacent channel interference to the barest minimum on a live GSM network. Co-channel interference was completely eliminated while adjacent channel interference was reduced by 55% which has a positive impact on the system performance.
