Seroprevalence of Infectious Markers in Blood Donors in Mbujimayi “Case of Kansele General Hospital” (Democratic Republic of Congo)  [PDF]

Blood transfusion is a life-saving act because in some cases, it is the last resort to save an individual’s life. However, the seroprevalence of infectious markers in blood donors is a major public health problem, both in developed and developing countries, in its magnitude. The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of infectious markers in blood donors. This is a descriptive study conducted in the city of Mbujimayi at kansele Hospital among registered blood donors (family volunteers and paid) from the period 12/01/2017 to 13/01/2018. The data were collected in a cross-sectional manner. The following observations were made: in the study period, 522 blood donors were registered. After analyzing the data, the seroprevalence of HIV/AIDS in blood donors is 4.4%, 2.1% of cases have an HCV serological status and 5.9% a HBS positive serological status, and 2.1% a positive RPR HIV status, the male sex predominated with 85.4% was male.

Six new provitamin A hybrids (LY1001-14, LY1001-22 and LY1001-23,) and synthetic maize varieties (PVASYN13, PVASYN9 and PVASYN7) were tested for their agronomic performance and compared to a locally adapted improved open pollinated variety (SAMARU) in the central and western conditions of DRC. A randomized complete block experiment with four replications was used. Following data were collected: 50% male and female flowering, plant and ear aspect, diseases incidence, plant height, ear aspect, ear rot and yield. The results showed non-significant differences (p > 0.05) in disease incidence and ears rot. Significant differences were observed (p < 0.05) for number of days to 50% of male and female flowering, anthesis-silking interval, plant height, plant aspect, ear aspect, and yield. For yield, two hybrids (LY100-14 and LY1001-22) respectively out-yielded local check by 71% and 56% while one synthetic (PVASYN 9) out-yielded the local check by 31% and the two others were comparable to the local check. Thus the hybrids (LY100-14 and LY1001-22) and synthetic varieties (PVASYN 9 and PVASYN13) are ready to be recommended for release to contribute to better production and nutrition for vulnerable people.
Reduction in Inter-Hemispheric Connectivity in Disorders of Consciousness

Abstract: Clinical diagnosis of disorders of consciousness (DOC) caused by brain injury poses great challenges since patients are often behaviorally unresponsive. A promising new approach towards objective DOC diagnosis may be offered by the analysis of ultra-slow (<0.1 Hz) spontaneous brain activity fluctuations measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during the resting-state. Previous work has shown reduced functional connectivity within the “default network”, a subset of regions known to be deactivated during engaging tasks, which correlated with the degree of consciousness impairment. However, it remains unclear whether the breakdown of connectivity is restricted to the “default network”, and to what degree changes in functional connectivity can be observed at the single subject level. Here, we analyzed resting-state inter-hemispheric connectivity in three homotopic regions of interest, which could reliably be identified based on distinct anatomical landmarks, and were part of the “Extrinsic” (externally oriented, task positive) network (pre- and postcentral gyrus, and intraparietal sulcus). Resting-state fMRI data were acquired for a group of 11 healthy subjects and 8 DOC patients. At the group level, our results indicate decreased inter-hemispheric functional connectivity in subjects with impaired awareness as compared to subjects with intact awareness. Individual connectivity scores significantly correlated with the degree of consciousness. Furthermore, a single-case statistic indicated a significant deviation from the healthy sample in 5/8 patients. Importantly, of the three patients whose connectivity indices were comparable to the healthy sample, one was diagnosed as locked-in. Taken together, our results further highlight the clinical potential of resting-state connectivity analysis and might guide the way towards a connectivity measure complementing existing DOC diagnosis.

The absolute necessity of water in the life of man remains undeniable to the point that some people think the water is the life. Metals are ubiquitous in surface waters. But their concentrations are generally very low which explains their name “trace metals” or “trace metals”. However, when the mining begins operating a metal-rich deposit, a change operates especially in waters in contact with these mining works. This study aims to determine the pH of the river water Lubumbashi, and then measure the accumulation of trace elements in the food chain in order to evaluate the risks to human health. The pH of the recorded values are within normal limits (6.5-9.5); Site 1 has an average pH of 7.962 (±0.185); the site 2 and 3 had a pH of 8.140 (±0.210) and 8.331 (±0.082) respectively. The samples of water show very low levels of metals which not exceed normal values with the exception of the Cd. This mineral element presents concentrations higher than 0.003 mg/l. The pH of the river Lubumbashi water meets drinking water standards accepted by the WHO. The Cd that has very high concentrations may contribute to the pollution of the river Lubumbashi. Note that the STL plant contributes significantly to the alkalizing and pollution water following these liquids tributaries.

The accidents of blood exposure are a real threat to the health personnel. According to our knowledge, in both hospitals, some actions in the prevention of accidents of blood exposure have been implemented. We have therefore conducted a survey about knowledge, attitudes and practices during the month of May 2013 in order to assess the current situation, to measure the overall level of knowledge and practices of personnel exposed. A survey was sent to 384 people using the interview technique directly. The salient results indicate that 81.3% of them admitted to having suffered from an accident of blood exposure and the results showed a good knowledge of the risk of contamination three HBV, HCV and HIV. The rate of vaccination against hepatitis B is 21.6%. 61.2% of accidents of blood exposure were occurred during recapping of needles, a gesture considered at risk. What to do in case of accidents of blood exposure appears to be insufficiently known by our sample. Accidents of blood exposure are still a concern in our community. Regular information and education office to best practice campaigns are needed to reduce the impact of these preventable incidents by simple measures.

Abstract: One hundred and thirty years after the work of Ludwig Boltzmann on the interpretation of the irreversibility of physical phenomena, and one century after Einstein's formulation of Special Relativity, we are still not sure what we mean when we talk of “time” or “arrow of time”. We shall try to show that one source of this difficulty is our tendency to confuse, at least verbally, time and becoming, i.e. the course of time and the arrow of time, two concepts that the formalisms of modern physics are careful to distinguish. The course of time is represented by a time line that leads us to define time as the producer of duration. It is customary to place on this time line a small arrow that, ironically, must not be confused with the “arrow of time”. This small arrow is only there to indicate that the course of time is oriented, has a well-defined direction, even if this direction is arbitrary. The arrow of time, on the other hand, indicates the possibility for physical systems to experience, over the course of time, changes or transforma-tions that prevent them from returning to their initial state forever. Contrary to what the ex-pression “arrow of time” suggests, it is there-fore not a property of time itself but a property of certain physical phenomena whose dynamic is irreversible. By its very definition, the arrow of time presupposes the existence of a well- established course of time within which – in addition – certain phenomena have their own temporal orientation. We think that it is worth-while to emphasize the difference between sev-eral issues traditionally subsumed under the label “the problem of the direction of time”. If the expressions “course of time”, “direction of time” and “arrow of time” were better defined, systematically distinguished from one another and always used in their strictest sense, the debate about time, irreversibility and becoming in physics would become clearer.

Abstract: This study examines the determinants of arbitrage spread of S&P 500 firms between 2004 and 2014. We find that bid hostility, the relative size of the target compared to the potential bidder and the acquisition premium paid by the bidding firm are associated with greater arbitrage spread while the proportion of cash in the offer and target termination fees are associated with smaller arbitrage spread.

Abstract: Biometric authentication systems are believed to be effective compared to traditional authentication systems. The introduction of biometrics into smart cards is said to result into biometric-based smart ID card with enhanced security. This paper discusses the biometric-based smart ID card with a particular emphasis on security and privacy implications in Rwanda universities environment. It highlights the security and implementation issues. The analysis shows that despite the necessity to implement biometric technology, absence of legal and regulatory requirements becomes a challenge to implementation of the proposed biometric solution. The paper is intended to engage a broad audience from Rwanda universities planning to introduce the biometric-based smart ID cards to verify students and staff for authentication purpose.
