Brazilian Oral Research , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-83242004000400004
Abstract: the aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of manual and electric toothbrushes in plaque control in periodontal patients after proper instructions. thirty six periodontal patients (mean age of 49 years, 21 females and 15 males) were included and completed the study (100% compliance). a single-blinded, randomized, controlled, cross-over clinical design was adopted, with the patients using during 2 periods of 14 days each the manual and/or electric toothbrush. four subgroups of 9 individuals were studied: a1 - used manual toothbrush in both experimental periods; a2 - used the manual toothbrush during the first period and the electrical toothbrush during the second period; b1 - used electrical toothbrush during both periods; b2 - used the electrical toothbrush in the first period and the manual one in the second period. brushing was performed during 14 days and at day 14 and 28 it was performed in the clinic, and timing of brushing was recorded without patients being aware. the plaque index (silness, l?e, 1964) was used. intra-group comparisons were performed by paired t-test and inter-group comparisons by independent sample t-test, with an alpha level of 0.05. the results showed no difference between the tested brushes neither for plaque nor for timing. however, re-instruction was detected as an important factor, since for all groups the second period, after reinstruction, showed lower plaque scores. it is concluded that professional advice and instruction and re-instruction seem more important in order to obtain good plaque control than the choice of toothbrush in subjects with periodontal disease.

The Interaction Effect of Perceived Competence and Goal Harmony on Perceived Usefulness  [PDF]
Tove B?e
Creative Education (CE) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2016.78118
Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine the factors that influence teachers’ perceived usefulness of e-learning technology in a university context. We argue that perceived competence and goal harmony will have an interaction effect on perceived usefulness as well as being predictor variables themselves. Additionally, we include and test the established constructs of confirmation of pre- adoption expectations, and perceived ease of use as independent variables and controls in the study. The model is tested in a university setting, and the results show that perceived competence and goal harmony are positively related to perceived usefulness. The negative interaction effect between goal harmony and perceived competence on perceived usefulness is also supported, indicating the synergic effect of these two constructs on the dependent variable.

The Prospect of Market-Driven Improvements in Animal Welfare: Lessons from the Case of Grass Milk in Denmark
Lennart R. Heerwagen,Tove Christensen,Peter Sand?e
Animals , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/ani3020499
Abstract: Citizens in many European countries urge that the welfare of farm animals should be improved. Policy-makers propose that this could, at least to some extent, be achieved through increased consumption of animal products produced under labeling schemes guaranteeing higher standards of animal welfare. Yet considerable uncertainties exist about the ability of the market to promote animal welfare. So far the consumption of most welfare-friendly products has been limited, and the impact of driving and limiting factors is poorly understood. Reviewing market studies, we identify the factors that have shaped the relatively successful market for grass milk in Denmark. We conclude that the positive drivers such as an appealing animal welfare attribute and animal welfare being bundled with other qualities are essentially the same as those operating in connection with less successful animal welfare-friendly products. It is therefore to be expected that other animal welfare-friendly food products marketed via “natural behaviors” in the farm animals will catch the interest of consumers. However, grass milk consumption has been supported by proper labeling, ready availability and low price premiums as well as multifaceted public support. This suggests that successful cases require the joint presence of a number of positive drivers as well as low consumption barriers.
Halitosis: an overview of epidemiology, etiology and clinical management
Rsing, Cassiano Kuchenbecker;Loesche, Walter;
Brazilian Oral Research , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-83242011000500015
Abstract: halitosis is an unpleasant condition that causes social restraint. studies worldwide indicate a high prevalence of moderate halitosis, whereas severe cases are restricted to around 5% of the populations. the etiological chain of halitosis relates to the presence of odoriferous substances in exhaled air, especially the volatile sulphur compounds (vsc) produced by bacteria. the organoleptic diagnosis is the gold standard and clinical management includes oral approaches, especially periodontal treatment and oral hygiene instructions, including the tongue. when oral strategies are not successful, referral to physicians is warranted.

Stomatos , 2007,
Abstract: This study aimed at verifying, in the third party dental services registered in theRegional Dental Council/RS, the periodic preventive maintenance approach. Of a total of15 services, 8 participated in this study. Five services answered that there is no minimumperiod between appointments. All charge the same value for treatment and maintenanceconsultations. Half of the interviewed dentists affirm that periodontal disease has a cure, while 25% answered that this is dependent of other factors and the other 25% believe thereis no cure for the disease. Concerning appointment setting, 50% uses telephone, 37,5%already make the appointment in the last consultation and 12,5% give this responsibilityto the patient. It may be concluded that the maintenance program in third party dentalservices is similar in terms of systematic approach.

Stomatos , 2009,
Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the opinion of periodontists from Porto Alegre about aspects related to the understanding the clinical approach to periodic maintenance. Sixty one periodontists registered in the city participated in this study, answering to a questionnaire about how the face periodontal maintenance. The majority (86.9%) thinks that the maintenance interval should be variable, depending on individual characteristics. Risk factors were pointed as the reasons to choose the recall intervals. 73.8% of the interviewed dentists charges the same amount of money for treatment and maintenance appointments and more than 90% thinks that the difference between maintenance and retreatment is linked to disease recurrence. 81.9% of the periodontists performs maintenance in one single visit and the majority considers periodontal disease a disease that can be cured. The analysis of the results leads to the conclusion that the periodontal patient has the opportunity of being treated and maintained in a healthy status. It is important that the periodontista individually know his patient in order to establish the frequency of this maintenance.
