Enhanced Cytotoxicity for Colon 26 Cells Using Doxorubicin-Loaded Sorbitan Monooleate (Span 80) Vesicles

International Journal of Biological Sciences , 2013,
Abstract: Span 80 (sorbitan monooleate) vesicles behaved differently from conventional phospholipid vesicles (liposomes) because the former had a more fluid interface. After doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was encapsulated into the Span 80 vesicle (loading efficiency: 63 %), DOX-loaded Span 80 vesicles (DVs) were thereafter added to Colon 26 cells. It was suggested, from the flow cytometric analysis and confocal laser microscopic observation, that DVs directly deliver DOX into the cytoplasm of Colon 26 cells. DVs showed the different delivery manner from the DOX-loaded liposomes (DLs). It is considered that the difference of delivery manner between DVs and DLs resulted in the difference of cytotoxicity (IC50); i.e. IC50 values for DVs and DLs were 5 and > 30 μM, respectively. The results obtained herein would give the fundamental findings which can contribute to the improvement of formulation of conventional liposome-based carrier and its cytotoxicity.
Oxidative Stress Can Affect the Gene Silencing Effect of DOTAP Liposome in an In Vitro Translation System

International Journal of Biological Sciences , 2011,
Abstract: Oxidative stress can affect in vitro GFP expression through its control of the gene silencing effect of the liposome prepared by 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethyl-ammonium propane (DOTAP). The gene silencing effect of cationic DOTAP liposome in in vitro GFP expression, especially focusing on its translation process, and the effects of oxidative stress on its silencing effect were investigated. GFP expression, initiated by mRNA, was found to be thoroughly inhibited in the presence of DOTAP liposome at concentration of more than 2.5 mM, though its inhibitory effect was reduced in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The analyses of (i) the interaction of mRNA with DOTAP, (ii) the chemical structure of DOTAP, and (iii) the membrane fluidity of DOTAP liposome imply the possible role of gene expression by the liposome membrane and stress conditions.
Gender differences in recognising depression in a case vignette in a university student population: Interaction of participant and vignette subject gender with depressive symptomatology  [PDF]
Junko Andou, Toshinori Kitamura
Open Journal of Psychiatry (OJPsych) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojpsych.2013.34041
Abstract:

Objective: Gender difference in depression prevalence may be explained by variation in the recognition of depression due to differences in gender identity. Method: We distributed one of four questionnaires describing fictional cases of Major Depressive Episode (MDE) (2 predominant symptom types × 2 case vignette subject genders) to 72 students. Participants were asked whether and how much they thought the subject in the case was emotionally as well as somatically ill. They were also administered the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale and the Ito Sex Role Scale. Results: Participants scoring high in gender identity communion and ideal gender roles communion and delicacy were more likely to identify the vignette subject as ill. The severity of somatic illness was rated more highly for the case of predominantly somatic symptomatology. The recognition of severity of psychological illness was influenced by two interactive terms: the gender of the vignette subjects x gender of the participants and predominant symptoms x gender of the vignette subjects. Recognition of MDE case vignettes as indicating illness, particularly psychological illness, was more likely when the participant was female, scored highly in femininity, or was of the gender as the case subject. Conclusion: These findings may be concordant with the self-schema theory.

Positioning Training Tool for Radiography  [PDF]
Toshinori Maruyama, Hideki Yamamoto
Positioning (POS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/pos.2013.44029
Abstract:

Accurate positioning reduces the X-ray exposure of the subject and produces a valuable X-ray image for diagnosis. This paper describes the development of a positioning training tool that supports those studying to be radiological technologists in learning the positioning technique efficiently. Students perform the positioning on a personal computer using a three-dimensional computer graphics (3DCG) phantom constructed from computed tomography (CT) image data and confirm the produced plane image corresponding to the positioned phantom. It is expected that students will be able to undertake positioning training using our tool anywhere and at any time without using X-ray equipment. Repeated use of our training tool will help students attain a deep understanding of anatomy and acquire positioning skills efficiently and accurately.

Structural Studies on ι-Carrageenan Derived Oligosaccharides and Its Application  [PDF]
Annabelle V. Briones, Toshinori Sato
Advances in Chemical Engineering and Science (ACES) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/aces.2014.41003
Abstract:

Mild hydrochloric acid hydrolysis of i-carrageenan from Eucheuma spinosum yielded two oligosaccharides of sulfated tetrasaccharide structure. These were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESIMS). Both oligosaccharides have structure of b-D-galactopyranose(Galp)4S-(14)-α-D-AnGalp2S-(13)-b-D-galactopyranose Galp)4S-(14)-α-D-AnGalp2S-(13). Application of the resulting oligosaccharides on protein delivery system in terms of encapsulation efficiency was performed.

A study of topological vertexing for heavy quark tagging
Toshinori Abe
Physics , 2001, DOI: 10.1063/1.1394427
Abstract: We compare heavy quark tagging and anti-tagging efficiencies for vertex detectors with different inner raddi using the topological vertex technique developed at the SLC/SLD experiment. Charm tagging benefits by going to very small inner radii.
Lepton Flavor Violating Decays - Review & Outlook
Toshinori Mori
Physics , 2006,
Abstract: Here I review the status and prospects of experimental investigations into lepton flavor violation (LFV) in charged leptons. Rare LFV processes are naturally expected to occur through loops of TeV scale particles predicted by supersymmetric theories or other models beyond the Standard Model. In contrast to physics of quark flavors that is dominated by the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, LFV in charged leptons is a definitive signal of new physics. Currently active researches are rare tau decay searches at the B factories. The MEG experiment will soon start a sensitive search for the LFV muon decay, mu to e gamma. Prospects for searches at the LHC, a possibility of a fixed target LFV experiment with high energy muons, and a sensitivity of leptonic kaon decays to LFV are also briefly discussed.
Length and multiplicity of the local cohomology with support in a hyperplane arrangement
Toshinori Oaku
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: Let $R$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables with coefficients in a field $K$ of characteristic zero. Let $D_n$ be the $n$-th Weyl algebra over $K$. Suppose that $f \in R$ defines a hyperplane arrangement in the affine space $K^n$. Then the length and the multiplicity of the 1st local cohomology group $H^1_{(f)}(R)$ as left $D_n$-module coincide and are explicitly expressed in terms of the Poincar\'e polynomial or the M\"obius function of the arrangement.
