Abstract: Piericidin A1, 3’-rhamnopiericidin A1, and a novel compound piericidin E, a new quorum-sensing (QS) inhibitor
against Chromobacterium violaceum CV026, were isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. QS is well
known as a microbial signaling system and controls certain types of gene expression resulting in bioluminescence,
biofilm formation, swarming motility, antibiotic biosynthesis, and virulence factor production. C. violaceum CV026 is
commonly used to determine qualitative and quantitative QS activity. The structures of piericidin derivatives were characterized,
and their QS activities were determined.
Properties of Hemolysin and Protease Produced by Aeromonas trota

Abstract: We examined the properties of exotoxins produced by Aeromonas trota (A. enteropelogenes), one of the diarrheagenic species of Aeromonadaceae. Nine of 19 A. trota isolates that grew on solid media containing erythrocytes showed hemolytic activity. However, the hemolytic activities of the culture supernatants of these hemolytic strains of A. trota were markedly lower than those of A. sobria when cultured in liquid medium, and the amount of hemolysin detected by immunoblotting using antiserum against the hemolysin produced by A. sobria was also low. A mouse intestine loop assay using living bacterial cells showed that A. trota 701 caused the significant accumulation of fluid, and antiserum against the hemolysin produced suppressed the enterotoxic action of A. trota 701. These results indicated that A. trota 701 was diarrheagenic and the hemolysin produced was the causative agent of the enterotoxic activity of A. trota. The hemolysin in A. sobria was previously shown to be secreted in a preform (inactive form) and be activated when the carboxy-terminal domain was cleaved off by proteases in the culture supernatant. Since mature hemolysin was detected in the culture supernatants of A. trota, we analyzed the extracellular protease produced by A. trota. Fifteen of 19 A. trota isolates that grew on solid media containing skim milk showed proteolytic activity. We subsequently found that most A. trota isolates possessed the serine protease gene, but not the metalloprotease gene. Therefore, we determined the nucleotide sequence of the serine protease gene and its chaperone A. trota gene. The results obtained revealed that the deduced amino acid sequences of serine protease and the chaperone were homologous to those of A. sobria with identities of 83.0% and 75.8%, respectively.
Investigation of Specifics of Self-Management towards Dealing with Cancer Pain among Adult Outpatients  [PDF]

Abstract: Purpose: This study aimed to identify specifics of self-management towards dealing with cancer pains among adult outpatients. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 adult outpatients (9 males and 7 females) who suffered from cancer pain and the data obtained were analyzed using the qualitative synthesis method of KJ Ho. Results: An analysis of the results revealed these key findings for the following symbolic wording of the semi-structured interviews: Cooperative relationship with medical professionals; Problems originating from cancer pain; Self-regulation of analgesic medications based on the interactions with medical professionals; Self-regulation of the analgesic medications based on the physical perceptions of the effects; Self-regulation to maintain a balanced and calm mind, Fulfilling life by the pain alleviation and liberation from the restrictions imposed by the cancer; and Efforts to maintain their lives by themselves. Conclusion: Based on the cooperative relationship established with medical professionals, the patient carried out the self-regulation of cancer pain using analgesics, and self-regulation to maintain a balanced and calm mind. Nurses must therefore sufficiently educate patients regarding how to communicate successfully with medical professionals in order to improve cancer patients’ pain management regarding both physical and mental aspects.
Dust Resulting from Tire Wear and the Risk of Health Hazards  [PDF]

Abstract:

The present study examined the effects of air pollutants on people’s health, focusing on dust produced from automobile tires while cars drive on roads. The annual volume of dust resulting from tire wear, calculated based on the number of automobiles registered in Japan, was 1747245.4 m3. To put it simply, this translates to approximately 1.4 times the volume of the Tokyo Dome, a famous Japanese baseball stadium. Particulate substances are categorized into three groups depending on their size, and dust resulting from tire wear is classified into the coarse particle mode along with mold spores, pollen, and dust produced from brake pads. This study examined whether or not tire dust causes health damage similarly to pollen, a particulate substance in the same group. There were 38/cm2 dust particles resulting from tire wear on a busy road in Osaka Prefecture, and this number was larger than that of cedar pollen/cm2 (35), a cause of hay fever, identified in Hokkaido. The results suggest that tire dust may also adversely affect the health of people if any of its constituents has a toxicity or causes allergies.

On graphs whose Hosoya indices are primitive Pythagorean triples

Abstract: We discuss families of triples of graphs whose Hosoya indices are primitive Pythagorean triples. Hosoya gave a method to construct such families of caterpillars, i.e., trees whose vertices are within distance 1 of a central path. He also pointed out a common structure to the families, and conjectured the uniqueness of the structure. In this paper, we give an answer to his conjecture.

Abstract: Rhodobacter sphaeroides RV (RV) produces high yields of hydrogen from organic acids in the presence of light. The hydrogen production from acetate is lower than that from lactate, probably because of its low ability to metabolize acetate. In this study, gene of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ACDH, EC 1.2.1.10) that catalyzes the reversible conversion of acetaldehyde and CoA to acetyl-CoA with the concurrent reduction of NAD to NADH, is overexpressed in the RV strain. The produced acetyl-CoA can be oxidized to carbon dioxide in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, wherein electrons are generated and used for hydrogen production. The byproduct NADH can be used as reducing agent for acetate to produce acetaldehyde by acetate dehydrogenase. The recombinant RV strain (RVAC) expressing the ACDH gene showed ACDH activity with a specific activity of 3.2 mU/ mg, and the RV and the recombinant RV strain that harbored the intact (empty) plasmid pLP-1.2 (RVI) showed no detectable ACDH activity. The hydrogen yields of the RVAC strain from 21-mM acetate were 1.5-fold higher than that of the wild type RV strain and also that of the RVI strain. In contrast, hydrogen yield from 21-mM lactate was 30% lower than that in the control strains.

Abstract: Experiments at CERN and Fermilab have been competing each other to improve the measurement of a CP violation parameter, epsilon'/epsilon. Fermilab KTeV-E832 recently announced their final result, Re(epsilon'/epsilon) = [19.2 +- 2.1] x 10^{-4}. The new world average shows the existence of direct CP violation in the decay process itself with 12 standard deviations.
CP Violation in Kaon Decays (II)

Abstract: Major progress has been made in kaon physics in the past 50 years. The number of KL->pi+pi- events has increased by 6 orders of magnitude, and the observed CP violation was experimentally proven to be caused by a complex phase in the CKM matrix. Recent kaon experiments are now searching for new physics beyond the standard model with the K->pi nu nu-bar decays. The branching ratio of K->pi nu nu-bar decays are 7-8 orders of magnitude smaller than the branching ratio of KL->pi+ pi-. This paper reviews the progress of kaon experiments in the US and Japan, and how the 6-7 orders of magnitude improvements were possible in the past 50 years.
