Mirror-Mark Tests Performed on Jackdaws Reveal Potential Methodological Problems in the Use of Stickers in Avian Mark-Test Studies

PLOS ONE , 2014, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0086193
Abstract: Some animals are capable of recognizing themselves in a mirror, which is considered to be demonstrated by passing the mark test. Mirror self-recognition capacity has been found in just a few mammals having very large brains and only in one bird, the magpie (Pica pica). The results obtained in magpies have enormous biological and cognitive implications because the fact that magpies were able to pass the mark test meant that this species is at the same cognitive level with great apes, that mirror self-recognition has evolved independently in the magpie and great apes (which diverged 300 million years ago), and that the neocortex (which is not present in the bird's brains) is not a prerequisite for mirror self-recognition as previously believed. Here, we have replicated the experimental design used on magpies to determine whether jackdaws (Corvus monedula) are also capable of mirror self-recognition by passing the mark test. We found that our nine jackdaws showed a very high interest towards the mirror and exhibited self-contingent behavior as soon as mirrors were introduced. However, jackdaws were not able to pass the mark test: both sticker-directed actions and sticker removal were performed with a similar frequency in both the cardboard (control) and the mirror conditions. We conclude that our jackdaws' behaviour raises non-trivial questions about the methodology used in the avian mark test. Our study suggests that the use of self-adhesive stickers on sensitive throat feathers may open the way to artefactual results because birds might perceive the stickers tactilely.

Nefrología (Madrid) , 2011,
Abstract: background: the impact of each episode of peritonitis on long-term survival of peritoneal dialysis (pd) patients has yet to be defined. objectives: to determine the risk that each episode of peritonitis poses for patient survival and for the pd technique. patients: 1515 patients included in the levante registry from 1 january 1993 to 31 december 2005. methods: retrospective analysis of a multicentre registry using cox regression for time-dependent variables. results: we analysed 1609 episodes of peritonitis in 716 patients (47.2%). in the univariate analysis, each case of peritonitis treated in the outpatient unit was associated with an increase in mortality (hazard ratio [hr] 1.99, p<.001), which was greater for episodes that required hospitalisation (hr 3.62, p<.001). mortality increased with each successive episode in the same patient. multivariate analysis confirmed the association of each case of peritonitis with lower long-term survival (hr 2.01, p<.001), with a different risk for episodes due to gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi (hr 1.73, 2.43 and 5.71, respectively; p<.001). other variables associated with mortality were age, low residual renal function, absence of vascular access and comorbidity. peritonitis was the only independent variable associated with technique failure (hr 1.29, p<.001), with a different risk for episodes due to gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi (hr 1.73, 2.43 and 5.71, respectively; p<.001). conclusions: episodes of peritonitis negatively influence long-term survival of patients on pd.
Plantas nodriza en la reforestación con Pinus hartwegii Lindl.

Revista Chapingo. Serie ciencias forestales y del ambiente , 2009,
Abstract: on the ajusco volcano, mexico city, mexico, pinus hartwegii seedlings were planted in five treatments: ne side of lupinus montanus plants, ne side of penstemon gentianoides plants, between festuca tolucensis grasses, in small openings where grasses were cleared away, and in small natural gaps among the grasses. mortality, diameter, height, biomass and foliar nutrient concentration (n, p, k) were evaluated six (dry season) and 12 months (rainy season) after tree-planting. photosintetically active radiation (par) was measured with hemispheric photographs and the program hemiview. mortality was analyzed using logistic regression, while morphological and physiological variables were analyzed with multivariate variance analysis. also was employed analysis of variance. there were no differences in mortality (average of 15 %) among treatments. the anova showed higher trees in the lupinus, penstemon and cleared treatments, in comparison to grass and small natural gaps treatments (p<0.10). the manova exhibited higher tree leaf concentrations of n and k in the seedlings associated to lupinus one year after planting date in the rainy season, in comparison to the grass treatment, and higher n concentrations than the clearing treatment (p<0.10). the par was lower when the seedlings were associated to plants, but did not limit the growth of seedlings. is recommended the use of lupinus as nurse plant associated to pinus hartwegii.

Pérez Vejo,Tomás;

Abstract: this paper presents an analysis of the theoretical and methodological problems that arise from the use of images as historical documents, as well as some proposals, both theoretical and methodological, to deal with iconic sources in the writing of history.

Revista de Indias , 2012,
Abstract: Analysis of the reorganization of museums carried out by the Mexican State between 1944, the year of the inauguration of the refounded National Museum of History, and 1964, when the Anthropological and Vicerroyal national museums were inaugurated. The narrative of the nation underlying those inaugurations is also analyzed. Análisis de la reordenación museística llevada a cabo por el Estado mexicano entre 1944, inauguración del refundado Museo Nacional de Historia, y 1964, inauguración de los museos nacionales de Antropología y del Virreinato, y del relato de nación que la sustenta.
