Conceptualizing and Measuring Group Openness and Cohesion as Dimensions of Group Personality  [PDF]

Abstract: Groups exhibit behavioral consistencies similar to individuals, such as making more or less bold decisions or struggling more or less frequently. However, previous research findings focus only on specific dimensions of groups instead of the general structure of group personality. Based on previous research findings on group and team efficiency, we derived two basic dimensions of group personality, group openness and cohesion, representing the group’s outward and inward orientation, respectively. We present the “Group Openness and Cohesion Questionnaire” (GOCQ) as a measure to assess these two group personality dimensions in groups independent of their context. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the proposed two-dimensional structure with good to excellent psychometric properties. Evidence of validity is provided through group age, group size, and by the fact that the ratings reflect team characteristics. In general, the results support the conceptualization of these two basic dimensions of group personality and provide first indications of validity of the presented measure GOCQ.

Hereby, Gay's usage of numerical approximation can be replaced by exact formulas which are surprisingly nice, too.

Abstract: this article deals with sexual orientation in a municipal grade school (grades 5th to 8th) in rio de janeiro, brazil. the reflections about how a school develops this work are investigated from the perspective of the emergence of an image of gender during the making up of an ethnographic study. the fact that a larger number of girls than boys allowed themselves to be interviewed leads one to question who talks about these subjects with the adolescents and how the topic of sexuality is approached, limited and inserted into the school. it can be said that there are two central topics around which sex education classes are organized: pregnancy and std/aids, to which are linked the forms of prevention - the condom and birth control methods. this is followed by a discussion of issues about how the feminine and masculine bodies are viewed, which is in turn related to the historical process of the female body's medicalization. finally, a few issues about some paradoxes confronted by the adolescents in relation to birth control.

Abstract: the strong influence exerted by the world bank (bird) on the brazilian macroeconomic politics extends over various sectors, among them the education. in view of the marked ascendancy of this institution in brazil, this paper aims at analyzing the proposals characterized by such input to the education sector. initially, the general features of the educational reform defended by bird are presented, and in a second part of the paper the convergence between bird's proposals and the education project implemented in this country by fernando henrique cardoso's government are pointed out. in the mapping out of this project the references adopted are the government proposal of 1994, information collected from the ministry of education website, as well as statements and articles by the education minister paulo renato de souza. the third part of this paper refers to the basic education evaluation system (saeb), and to the education strategies presented by the minister of education in view of the results of the tests applied in 1999. the paper concludes that the brazilian education project cannot be analyzed just from the quantitative data presented by the government since, seen by themselves, such data are not sufficient to analyze the effects of the expansion of the education system. such expansion must be analyzed considering the changes in its effects in different contexts. with the expansion of the education system what is seen is not the elimination of exclusion, but the creation of new hierarchy mechanisms and new forms of exclusion scattered along the process of schooling and social life.

Abstract: youth sexuality has been an object of attention in our society. one of the main focuses of preoccupation and intervention is adolescent pregnancy, which is also recurrently labeled as unwanted, precocious, and not planned. this article reflects about the present discursive explosion regarding this theme, and the way adolescent sexuality has been treated as a social problem, upon which the school is called to intervene. the article analyzes how the sexual conduct of individuals and the population has become an object of analysis and of different medical, pedagogical, political and governmental interventions. different fields, such as medicine, demography and education fuse themselves in view of regulating adolescent sexuality intending, among other things, to avoid pregnancy, which, in our society, is not understood as an experience to be lived at this time in life.

Abstract: based in propositions of the theory of reception, in the field of sociology of the culture, this paper discusses the role of the cinematographic review starting from two positions: the one that defends 'author's movies' and the one that assumes a supposed end of the critical function. the persistent debate opposing art or author's movies ('refined') to ('easy') industrial and massive ones seems as old as movies themselves and reduces movies to the mere opposition of 'art versus industry'. that seems still today as an fulcral argument in the field of criticism. the complexification of cinematographic and artistic thought implies in a displacement of its reception and, consequently, of its sociology. in that sense, one intends to debate the possible relocalizations of concepts, such as the ones that reduce movies to high' versus 'low' and 'educated' versus 'vulgar'.

Abstract: this article is based on data on sexual education from an ethnographic research carried between august 2002 and july 2003 in a public school in the city of rio de janeiro. sex education was offered in science courses provided by the center of adolescent educators. the focus on reproduction matters contradictorily entice students to the subject of pregnancy which public policies wished to avoid. the course aimed at instigate a sense of responsibility about sexual relations. however information on contraceptive methods was usually related to adult s matters and remained distant from youth's anxieties thus not acknowledging adolescent sexuality.

Abstract: this article is based on an ethnographic research carried out at a public school in rio de janeiro, from august 2002 to july 2003. it analyzes how girls idealize their first sexual intercourse and how the school refers to this aspect of the adolescents' life and intervenes in it. this phase is accompanied with a series of concerns and plans, especially for the girls, who demonstrate to ascribe less value to virginity than to their first sexual intercourse. on the level of explicit intentions, they reproduce school teachings that prescribe not only the use of preservatives, but also a certain ideal type of relationship between boys and girls. thus, certain limitations of school intervention are perceived.

Abstract: today, sexuality is considered a matter of public health, and the school is a privileged place for the implementation of public policies that promote children's and adolescents' health. thus, it has been established, in agreement with the national curriculum parameters (pcns), as a transversal theme in order to disseminate itself throughout the whole pedagogical field and to broaden its effects in a wide range of different areas, including physical education. this research analyzes the requirements of sexuality in the pcns with the aim of identifying the use of the sexuality concept, the historical uniqueness of this proposal and its possible effects at schools, more specifically through physical education.

Assim, com base em entrevistas com críticos da Argentina, de Cuba e do México, s o discutidas quest es do tipo: qual o papel específico da crítica nesses países? E qual o seu estado nos dias de hoje em compara o a sua institucionaliza o nos anos de 1950/1960? Apesar da dificuldade de se chegar a uma defini o estrita sobre a institui o “crítica”, busca-se 1) valorizar o debate sobre recep o de bens culturais, e 2) compreender certo circuito latino-americano nele inscrito.
