Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Inference for the Monty Hall Problem  [PDF]

Abstract: We devise an approach to Bayesian statistics and their applications in the analysis of the Monty Hall problem. We combine knowledge gained through applications of the Maximum Entropy Principle and Nash equilibrium strategies to provide results concerning the use of Bayesian approaches unique to the Monty Hall problem. We use a model to describe Monty’s decision process and clarify that Bayesian inference results in an “irrelevant, therefore invariant” hypothesis. We discuss the advantages of Bayesian inference over the frequentist inference in tackling the uneven prior probability Monty Hall variant. We demonstrate that the use of Bayesian statistics conforms to the Maximum Entropy Principle in information theory and Bayesian approach successfully resolves dilemmas in the uneven probability Monty Hall variant. Our findings have applications in the decision making, information theory, bioinformatics, quantum game theory and beyond.
Identification of ATP-Binding Regions in the RyR1 Ca2+ Release Channel

Abstract: ATP is an important modulator of gating in type 1 ryanodine receptor (RyR1), also known as a Ca2+ release channel in skeletal muscle cells. The activating effect of ATP on this channel is achieved by directly binding to one or more sites on the RyR1 protein. However, the number and location of these sites have yet to be determined. To identify the ATP-binding regions within RyR1 we used 2N3ATP-2′,3′-Biotin-LC-Hydrazone (BioATP-HDZ), a photo-reactive ATP analog to covalently label the channel. We found that BioATP-HDZ binds RyR1 specifically with an IC50 = 0.6±0.2 mM, comparable with the reported EC50 for activation of RyR1 with ATP. Controlled proteolysis of labeled RyR1 followed by sequence analysis revealed three fragments with apparent molecular masses of 95, 45 and 70 kDa that were crosslinked by BioATP-HDZ and identified as RyR1 sequences. Our analysis identified four glycine-rich consensus motifs that can potentially constitute ATP-binding sites and are located within the N-terminal 95-kDa fragment. These putative nucleotide-binding sequences include amino acids 699–704, 701–706, 1081–1084 and 1195–1200, which are conserved among the three RyR isoforms. Located next to the N-terminal disease hotspot region in RyR1, these sequences may communicate the effects of ATP-binding to channel function by tuning conformational motions within the neighboring cytoplasmic regulatory domains. Two other labeled fragments lack ATP-binding consensus motifs and may form non-canonical ATP-binding sites. Based on domain topology in the 3D structure of RyR1 it is also conceivable that the identified ATP-binding regions, despite their wide separation in the primary sequence, may actually constitute the same non-contiguous ATP-binding pocket within the channel tetramer.

Abstract: We have often heard remarks such as “We can plot graphs from the mathematical equations”, including equations of lines, equations of curves, and equations of invisible and visible objects. Actually, we can present each object by mathematical equation and we can plot graphs from equations. Equations not only show visible objects but also can show invisible objects such as wave equations in differential equations. In fact, the change of equations is also to conduce the change of objects and phenomena. This paper presents mathematical equations, methods to plot the graphs in 2D and 3D space. The paper is also a small proof of this conclusion have been provided and addressing visualization problem for any object. The novelty of this paper presents some special equations of objects and shows the ideas to build objects from equations.

Tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world, following water. Black, oolong, and green tea are products of a perennial tree or shrub called Camellia sinensis. Camellia sinensis is native to Mainland China and is referenced in Chinese literature at least 5000 years ago. Since its discovery, green tea has been heralded as having several health benefits associated with its consumption. Traditionally, green tea has been used for a variety of medicinal purposes, such as the prevention and treatment of a variety of cancers, mental alertness, weight loss, lowering cholesterol level, and UV protection. Studies have shown that catechins, the polyphenols found in tealeaves, are effective as anti-infectious agents by affecting the infection process instead of specifically targeting the virus. This treatment strategy has the potential of reducing the prevalence of drug-resistant viruses and the reliance on anti-viral drug therapies. This paper will explore the efficacy of green tea in preventing infections by the hepatitis B and C, influenza and human immunodeficiency virus.

Cosmetic Surgery as Intrasexual Competition: The Mediating Role of Social Comparison  [PDF]

Cosmetic surgical procedures have previously been associated with some risks to psychological and physical health. Yet such procedures are on the rise, highlighting the need for a better understanding of the factors which might underlie the decision to undergo cosmetic surgery. In a sample of 297 young adults (192 women), we examined the relationship between intrasexual competition (IC), social comparison, and individuals’ attitudes, perceived risks, and desired spending on cosmetic surgical procedures. Results showed that women perceived more risk to cosmetic surgery, yet held more positive attitudes and desire to spend on cosmetic surgery compared to men. For both men and women, IC predicted positive attitudes and desired spending on cosmetic surgery. Social comparison mediated all relationships between IC and cosmetic surgery variables. Cosmetic surgery is discussed as a potential form of intrasexual competition rooted in the mate-preferences of the opposite sex.

Abstract: Basic knowledge of maps, because of its widespread use, has become a part of the individual’s modern literacy. This is why we were interested in how this kind of literacy is represented in schools, when it occurs and how it is upgraded. Based on the study of literature we have formed criteria of cartographic literacy and based on the comparative method we have compared curricula for the lower stage of primary education of two countries (England and Slovenia). We found that cartographic literacy is given most attention, as well as in content as in didactic recommendations, in the Slovene curriculum for Social Studies (second triad). But according to the pupils’ cognitive abilities, it is being introduced too late. In the English curriculum for Geography initial cartography is far more dependent on the teachers and their cartography knowledge (or lack of it) because of the general definition of objectives and lack of recommendations. A combination of such an open curriculum and teacher’s cartography knowledge (or lack of it) can push cartographic literacy a step back from other content. That is why educating teachers and paying attention to the matter either in the curriculum or in textbook sets is of utmost importance.

Abstract: A significant association exists between lower urinary tract symptoms and anxiety. Despite the efficacy of cognitive behavior therapies in treating a variety of phobic disorders, there are few published reports about the use of such treatments for urinary problems. We report a case of the phobia of urinary incontinence treated with cognitive behavioral techniques, which involved cognitive restructuring, distraction, relaxation training, and exposure to feared situations.

Abstract: An approximation method using to estimate the influence of the uncertainties of the neutron flux characteristic parameters in the irradiation positions on the NAA results using k0-standardization technique was presented. Those are the epithermal reactor neutron spectrum shape-factor α, the effective resonace energy Ε for a given nuclide and the thermal to epithermal neutron flux ratio f. The method is applied to estimate the effect of the uncertainties in the determination of α Ε, and f on final NAA results for some irradiation channels of the Dalat reactor. It also shows that presented method is suitable in practical use for the estimation of the errors due to the uncertainty of the neutron flux characteristic parameters at the irradiation position.
Organizational Structure: Influencing Factors and Impact on a Firm  [PDF]

The influence of certain factors on organizational structure has been in researchers’ focus for years, together with their impact on the overall organizational efficiency. Many of these factors are from the environment where traditional view commonly divided into internal and external factors. This paper presents the findings of a study to evaluate the influencing factors and impact on organizational structure of a sample of firms located in Hanoi, Vietnam. Structured questionnaires were administered with respect to these factors. The variables studied were identified from among the factors considered in contingency theory and by incorporating elements of the strategic choice approach. After grouping the variables into two factors (related to external and internal respectively), the results revealed three groups of firms according to how they regarded the impact of these factors on organizational structures. In those groups that consider the variables of internal factors to be modifiers of structure the organizational structures are of the “complex classical” type, whereas simple forms predominate in the group that believes these variables do not modify their structure.
