A propósito da produ o do território. : Sociologia urbana e rela es de poder na estrutura o do território como representa o política e científica
Tiago Castro Lemos
Revista da Faculdade de Letras : Sociologia , 2012,
Abstract: From a reflection about some data that outline the social conditions of urban sociology production, we attempt to illustrate how this area of knowledge is associated with the construction and generalization of political and scientific (di)visions of territory. By one hand we find the field of social sciences where different disciplines fight for a point of view determination and autonomy about urban territory. On the other hand, we find a network of complicity between the political power field and the field of social sciences, represented by sociology, where the first one try to impose an accurate social (di)vision of the territory, whereas the second one try to stabilize the disciplinary practice as a legitimate procedure. In both fields we find a quest for the imposition of a truth (scientific and political) on the territory, from which conceals the arbitrariness of the boundaries that limit the territory as an element of political and scientific interest.
First measurement of $σ_8$ using supernova magnitudes only
Tiago Castro,Miguel Quartin
Physics , 2014, DOI: 10.1093/mnrasl/slu071
Abstract: A method was recently proposed which allows the conversion of the weak-lensing effects in the supernova Hubble diagram from noise into signal. Such signal is sensitive to the growth of structure in the universe, and in particular can be used as a measurement of $\sigma_8$ which is independent from more traditional methods such as those based on the CMB, cosmic shear or cluster abundance. We extend here that analysis to allow for intrinsic non-Gaussianities in the supernova PDF, and discuss how this can be best modelled using the Bayes Factor. Although it was shown that a precise measurement of $\sigma_8$ requires ~$10^5$ supernovae, current data already allows an important proof of principle. In particular we make use of the 732 supernovae with z < 1 of the recent JLA catalog and show that a simple treatment of intrinsic non-Gaussianities with a couple of nuisance parameters is enough for our method to yield the values $\sigma_8 = 0.84^{+0.28}_{-0.65}$ or $\sigma_8 < 1.45$ at a $2\sigma$ confidence level. This result is consistent with mock simulations and it is also in agreement with independent measurements and presents the first ever measurement of $\sigma_8$ using supernova magnitudes alone.
Testing the Use of Coconut Fiber as a Cushioning Material for Transport Packaging  [PDF]

Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2012.33023
Abstract: In spite of being a raw material of virtually unlimited availability due to the massive consumption of the highly popular coconut water, fiber produced from green coconut is much less used than the dried coconut fiber. The objective of this study was to investigate the performance of green (white) coconut fiber as a cushioning material for use in packaging systems. The mechanical performance of both green coconut fibers in their natural state as well as those molded into the shape of cushioning pads were evaluated by shock absorption tests. The results showed that the fibers without agglutination agents exhibited the best performance when submitted to increasing static loads by presenting the greatest capacity to reduce impact acceleration. In addition, green coconut fiber presented behavior similar to that of cellulosic cushioning materials and in certain situations can be considered effective in protecting products that are considered fragile.

Brazilian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1808-86942011000400016
Abstract: a crooked nose is the result of deformities that might involve the bony nasal pyramid, the upper and lower lateral cartilages, and nasal septum, causing complaints of aesthetic and/or functional nature. purpose: to evaluate how satisfied are those patients who underwent rhinoplasty to correct crooked nose, through the questionnaire rhinoplasty outcomes evaluation (roe). material and method: a longitudinal study with retrospective analysis of preoperative satisfaction and prospective analysis of postoperative satisfaction of patients who underwent rhinoplasty. roe questionnaire was applied twice in the same visit aiming at measuring patient satisfaction in both pre and postoperative periods. nineteen patients who underwent rhinoplasty answered the roe. results: for all patients who underwent rhinoplasty, the average preoperative satisfaction score was of 24. 6±11. 3, while the average postoperative score was of 76. 1±19. 5 (p<0. 0001). average differences between pre and postoperative satisfaction scores in patients younger than 30 years of age were lower than those reported by >30-year-old patients (p=0. 05). conclusions: from the rhinoplasty outcomes evaluation questionnaire, it is possible to demonstrate the impact that rhinoplasty to correct a crooked nose determines the quality of life of patients. approximately 90% of patients undergoing rhinoplasty believed they achieved a good or excellent postoperative result

Turning noise into signal: learning from the scatter in the Hubble diagram
Tiago Castro,Miguel Quartin,Sandra Benitez-Herrera
Physics , 2015,
Abstract: The supernova Hubble diagram residual contains valuable information on both the present matter power spectrum and its growth history. In this paper we show that this information can be retrieved with precision by combining both peculiar velocity and weak-lensing analysis on the data. To wit, peculiar velocity induces correlations on the nearby supernovae while lensing induces a non-Gaussian dispersion in faraway objects. We show that both effects have almost orthogonal degeneracies and discuss how they can be extracted simultaneously from the data. We analyze the JLA supernova catalog in a 14-dimensional parameter space, assuming a flexible growth-rate index gamma. We arrive at the following marginalized constraints: sigma8 = $1.16^{+0.23}_{-0.47}$ and gamma = $0.80^{+0.29}_{-0.34}$. We note that these constraints complement well the ones obtained from other data sets. Assuming instead GR as the correct gravitation theory (and thus gamma = 0.55), the constraints in sigma8 tighten further: sigma8 = $0.89^{+0.18}_{-0.21}$.
