International Archives of Otorhinolaryngology , 2013,
Abstract: Introduction: Cystadenoma is an uncommon epithelial neoplasia that arises from the salivary glands. The malignancy can affect structures such as the larynx, nasopharynx, buccal mucosa, and palate. Objective: To describe a case of a giant cystadenoma of the floor of the mouth treated at a public hospital in midwestern Brazil. Case report: The patient was a 46-year-old woman with complaints of difficulties in articulating words and swallowing solid food and vocal fatigue. The progression of the disease since the initial consultation, the results of clinical examinations, and the outcome of surgery are described. Finals Comments: Cystadenoma must be considered in the differential diagnosis of cystic injuries in the floor of the mouth if the patient's symptoms are suggestive of this malignancy.

Abstract: introduction: the primary nasal lymphoma is an uncommon extranodal tumor and represents 0.44% of all extranodal lymphomas in this region. the primary nasal lymphoma derives from the t-lineage in nearly 75% of the cases. objective: to describe a case of nasosinusal lymphoma of t natural killer cells, attended in the clinical hospital of the federal university of goiás. case report: 48-year-old female patient with diffuse tumefaction in the left hemiface of firm-elastic consistency and painful upon digital compression. face sinuses tomography identified a total maxillary veiling to the left and some posterior ethmoidal cells. with the diagnostic hypothesis of a tumor affection, we opted for the surgical removal via a transmaxillary approach and the material was sent for biopsy. the histopathological exam diagnosed a highly necrotic tumor of angiocentric pattern, polymorphic and atypical lymphoid population (t /nk lymphoma); with the prognosis, the patient was submitted to chemical therapy with total regression of the facial edema. final comments: the otorhinolaryngologist must be attentive as regards the existence of lymphomas among the nasosinusal diseases, because the early diagnosis improves the survival as it prevents metastases, growth and local destruction.

This study aimed to report the use of operative group as a strategy for nursing care in a Center for Psychosocial Care (CAPS). Five meetings were conducted with users of CAPS in a town in the Northern Region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the first half of 2010. The resources used were dynamic group messaging and audio-visual materials. The operative groups constitute nursing care strategies that can assist in psychosocial rehabilitation of drug addicts and ethyl. The report aims to contribute to broader discussions about the theme, offering support for the practice of nurses in the development of actions in Mental Health as a work tool using the Operative Group.

Abstract: background and objectives: mechanically ventilated patients usually present larger amounts of pulmonary secretions because of impairment in mucociliary function and mucus transport. the manual resuscitator is considered a resource for pulmonary hyperinflation with the aim of preventing mucus retention and pulmonary complications, improving oxygenation and reexpanding collapsed areas. alternatively, the hyperinflation by mechanical ventilator is a reliable and practical device to promote lung expansion and desobstruction. the objective of this study was to review the literature concerning manual and ventilator hyperinflation treatments for patients in the intensive care units (icu) setting. contents: literature searches were performed using the databases medline, cinahl, scielo and lilacs with appropriate keywords, including: intensive care units, manual hyperinflation, mechanical ventilator, physiotherapy, physical therapy and ventilator hyperinflation. conclusions: although there are few studies demonstrating the efficacy of ventilator hyperinflation as a physical therapy device, it can be a safety option to promote therapeutic hyperinflation in icu, compared to manual hyperinflation.
Stock prices assessment: proposal of a new index based on volume weighted historical prices through the use of computer modeling
Tiago Colliri,Fernando F. Ferreira
Quantitative Finance , 2012, DOI: 10.1109/BWSS.2012.23
Abstract: The importance of considering the volumes to analyze stock prices movements can be considered as a well-accepted practice in the financial area. However, when we look at the scientific production in this field, we still cannot find a unified model that includes volume and price variations for stock assessment purposes. In this paper we present a computer model that could fulfill this gap, proposing a new index to evaluate stock prices based on their historical prices and volumes traded. Besides the model can be considered mathematically very simple, it was able to improve significantly the performance of agents operating with real financial data. Based on the results obtained, and also on the very intuitive logic of our model, we believe that the index proposed here can be very useful to help investors on the activity of determining ideal price ranges for buying and selling stocks in the financial market.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the efficacy of the association of corticosteroids and the standard treatment of bacterial meningitis in pediatric patients. methods: a systematic review of the literature was conducted through the medline database. only randomized controlled trials comparing dexamethasone with placebo in the treatment of pediatric patients with bacterial meningitis were included. results: eight articles met the inclusion criteria and were selected for analysis. there were no difference in mortality (p = 0.86), and incidence of neurological (p = 0.41) and auditory (p = 0.48) sequelae between the groups. conclusion: there are no benefits in associating corticosteroids with the standard treatment of bacterial meningitis in pediatric patients.
Intertidal life: field observations on the clingfish Gobiesox barbatulus in southeastern Brazil
Pires, Tiago H. S;Gibran, Fernando Z;
Neotropical Ichthyology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-62252011005000001
Abstract: the clingfish gobiesox barbatulus shows nocturnal feeding activity, spending most part of the day stationary and adhered to the inferior part of stones. to feed, this species uses the sit-and-wait and particulate feeding tactics. it shows a carnivorous feeding habit mostly consuming small benthic crustaceans. it can move in two ways: (1) "stone-by-stone", sliding its ventral sucker disc across each stone and (2) "surf", when it takes advantage of the energy of the ebbing tide to quickly cross a distance up to four times its body length. its reproductive season occurs between the end of spring and the beginning of summer, during which time it lays about 2,000 adhesive eggs of 1 mm each in a single layer under stones. it has more than one egg-laying session per reproductive season, therefore showing several different developmental stages. it performs fanning, mouthing and guarding of the eggs as forms of parental care. data shown here also indicates that g. barbatulus has some shelter fidelity, being probably territorial.
