Coelho, Maria Thereza ávila Dantas;Almeida Filho, Naomar de;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702002000200005
Abstract: this article analyzes health as a concept in some science-oriented discourses by representative authors of functional sociology, anthropology and epistemology, by focusing their notions of illness and procedures. in the field of sociology, the ideas of normality, labeling, and deviation from labeling patterns stand out. additionally, we present the main health models in north american health anthropology and evaluate the proposition of a new perspective that intends to overcome the duality between culture and society - the theory of signal, meaning and practice systems. we also analyze the canguilhemian difference between normality and health, as well as the notion of health as normative capacity. finally, we propose the distinctive concepts of primary, secondary and tertiary health as the first step of a theoretical construction that can guide health policies and social procedures based on a positive notion of health.

Abstract: this study focuses on signs, meanings, and practices related to mental normality and health in a northern coastal area of bahia, brazil. it discusses local conceptions about the non-existence or exclusive existence of mental normality, as well as points of view concerning total mental normality. it identifies the prototypes of normality, like "normal", "almost normal", and "false normal", as signs for distinguishing mentally normal persons. the article discusses the underlying values and concepts in local personal classification of mental normality and proposes a structural health device consisting of moral, scientific, religious, environmental, and social elements. it analyzes local normalization and mental health promotion actions and the local system of signs, meanings, and practices of normality. finally, the article analyzes the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of health. all these goals are met by comparing local conceptions with the scientific literature on medical epistemology, psychoanalysis, sociological labeling theory, and medical anthropology.

Coelho, Maria Thereza ávila Dantas;Almeida Filho, Naomar de;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73311999000100002
Abstract: this paper evaluates the work of the french philosopher g. canguilhem on the relationship of the concepts of health, normality, disease and pathology. canguilhem's critique of the positivistic approach on the dichotomy normalpathological is considered unsatisfactory, because it reinforces the disjunction quantitative-qualitative. the distinction between normality and health, as well as the conception of health as normative capacity, is analysed. finally, his pioneer ethical reflection on genetic engineering and his distinction between private, subjective health and public health are presented, pointing to the need for epistemological researches on the health concept.

Castro, Rodolfo de Almeida Lima;Portela, Margareth C.;Le?o, Anna Thereza;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007001000003
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the cross-cultural adaptation of the main quality of life instruments related to oral health. studies on cross-cultural adaptation of oral health-related quality of life measures were searched for in lilacs and medline. twenty-nine articles were analyzed, identifying distinct methods for cross-cultural adaptation of oral health-related quality of life measures. such differences could jeopardize the future use of these instruments, since the instruments may not adequately represent the health status of the respective target populations.

Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2006,
Abstract: The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate analytical studies on periodontal disease as a possible risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes. A literature search of the MEDLINE, SciELO, and LILACS bibliographic databases and CAPES thesis database was conducted up to December 2005, covering epidemiological studies of periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Of the 964 papers identified, 36 analytical studies met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-six epidemiological studies reported associations between periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes. There was a clear heterogeneity between studies concerning measurement of periodontal disease and selection of type of adverse pregnancy outcome. Therefore no meta-analysis was performed. Most studies did not control for confounders, thus raising serious doubts about their conclusions. The methodological limitations of most studies did not allow conclusions concerning the effects of periodontal disease on adverse pregnancy outcomes. Larger and methodologically rigorous analytical studies using reliable outcomes and exposure measures are recommended.
Partial recording protocols for periodontal disease assessment in epidemiological surveys
Vettore, Mario Vianna;Lamarca, Gabriela de Almeida;Le?o, Anna Thereza Thomé;Sheiham, Aubrey;Leal, Maria do Carmo;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007000100005
Abstract: the objective of the present study was to compare the reliability of four partial-mouth protocols for assessing shallow, moderate, and deep sites for periodontal pocket depth and clinical attachment levels. periodontal pocket depth and clinical attachment level measurements were recorded for 156 subjects (age > 30). the four models of partial-mouth protocols compared were: model i: all sites per tooth in the random half-mouth protocol randomly selecting one maxillary and mandibular quadrant, model ii: buccal sites in a full-mouth protocol, model iii: buccal sites in the random half-mouth protocol randomly selecting one maxillary and mandibular quadrant, model iv: all sites per tooth using community periodontal index teeth. in comparison with full mouth examination, model i did not show significant differences for periodontal pocket depth and clinical attachment level parameters. models ii and iii were different for some periodontal pocket depth means, and model iv significantly overestimated all clinical parameters related to periodontal disease. model i appears to be adequate to substitute for the full-mouth examination to assess the prevalence and severity of chronic periodontal disease in adults.
