Abstract: objectives: to establish a relationship between dental caries with the degree of streptococcus mutans present in the salivary flow and saliva buffer ability in 111 healthy adolescents seen at the pediatrics outpatient clinic of the hospital das clínicas de pernambuco. methods: intraoral examinations were performed and dental records filled to determine dmfs-s (decayed, missing teeth and filled permanent dental surfaces). following, saliva was collected to determined salivary flow and buffer ability. front teeth were scrapped to quantify streptococcus mutans present in the bacterial plaque. results: the population assessed had predominantly low caries activities with buffer ability of normal saliva and deficiency of salivary flow. the numbers of s mutans in the bacterial plaque exceeded 105 cfu/mg in the majority of individuals in the population studied. conclusions: caries activity was inversely proportional to the buffer capacity and directly proportional to the presence of streptococus mutans in the bacterial plaque. this low carie activity could be derived from the daily tooth-brushing with fluor dentifrices.

Abstract: microbiological processes were used for chitin and chitosan productions by cunninghamella elegans (ucp 542) grown in a new economic culture medium. the assay was carried out to evaluate the growth of c. elegans using yam bean (pachyrhizus erosus l. urban) medium, in different times of growth (24, 48, 72 and 96 hrs), incubated at 28oc in an orbital shaker at 150 rpm. the lyophilized biomass was determined by gravimetry. the polysaccharides were extracted by alkali-acid treatment, and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, titration and viscosity. c. elegans grown in the yam bean medium and produced higher yields of biomass (24.3 g/ ml) in 96 hrs. the high level was chitosan (66 mg/g), and chitin (440 mg/g) were produced at 48 and 72 hrs of growth, respectively. the polysaccharides showed degree of deacetilation and viscosimetric molecular weight as: 6.2% and 3.25 x104 g/mol for chitin, and 85% and 2.72 x 104 g/mol for chitosan, respectively. the results obtained suggest high biotechnological potential of yam bean as an economic source to produce chitin and chitosan by c. elegans. in addition, the new medium using yam bean for production of the chitin and chitosan may be used for many purposes to reduce the cost price of fermentation processes.

Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542009000400027
Abstract: the present research was carried out in the laboratory of water analysis at the engineering department at federal university of lavras (lwaed-ufla), in order to evaluate the hydrodynamic behavior of a lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (uasb) that was continuously fed with liquid effluent from swine manure with solid separation over 2mm. the hydrodynamic parameters were determined by a tracer study, under hydraulic retention time (hrt) of 12 hours, using lithium chloride (licl) as a tracer. the system was monitored periodically through physical analysis of samples collected at uasb, during the steady-state operational conditions. the physical-chemical analyses were accomplished using a flame photometry. the operational average temperature in the uasb reactor was 23.9oc .the uasb hydrodynamic parameters determined were: average residence time () of 38.3 h, number of dispersion d= 0.27, and the flow type was characterized as dispersed flow of great intensity. this research is of great importance due to the fact that the scaling-up of biological reactors is based on the hydrodynamic behavior, through which the bacterial kinetic is directly influenced, as reported by saleh (2004).

Parasites & Vectors , 2010, DOI: 10.1186/1756-3305-3-69
Abstract: Quantitative real time PCR (qPCR) identifying B. burgdorferi sl in ticks was able to detect 1-10 copies per reaction. B. spielmanii ospA-specific conventional PCR was also highly specific and showed no cross reactions with the other tested Borrelia species. From 1000 hanoveranian ticks 24.3% were positive compared to only 7.4% positives by dark-field microscopy. Related to tick stage 1.7% larvae, 18.1% nymphs, and 34.6% adults were positive. The most frequent species was B. garinii, followed by B. afzelii, B. spielmanii, B. valaisiana and B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (ss). 70.6% of I. ricinus were mono-infected, whereas 28.0% and 1.4% were infected with two and three Borrelia species, respectively. From 232 I. hexagonus collected from hedgehogs in different sites of Germany, qPCR detected 5.7% to be infected with B. burgdorferi sl, which were identified as B. afzelii, B. garinii and B. spielmanii. The evaluated qPCR to detect B. burgdorferi sl in Ixodes spp. is highly specific and sensitive. As a duplex qPCR including detection of Ixodes spp. DNA it is the first DNA based technique incorporating a control for successful DNA isolation from the vector tick. Establishment of a B. spielmanii specific conventional PCR filled the gap in PCR identification of principal European Borrelia genospecies. Practical application showed that all European pathogenic Borrelia spp. were present in I. ricinus flagged in recreational areas of the city of Hanover and confirmed I. hexagonus as reservoir for pathogenic Borrelia spp.Ticks of the genus Ixodes are transmission vectors for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl), the causative agent of Lyme borreliosis (LB). In Central Europe, the sheep or forest tick I. ricinus is the main vector for B. burgdorferi sl with a distribution area between the 66th and 39th degree of latitude and from Portugal to Russia [1]. Besides this classical vector, the hedgehog tick I. hexoganus, the fox tick I. canisuga, and the sea bird tick I. uriae contribut

Abstract: This paper outlines the pedagogical interventions carried out during the Supervised-Pedagogical Practice Research, Biological Sciences degree course, University of Vale do Itajaí, developed in the Socio-environmental Citizenship program, ‘Social and Environmental: Multiplying Dreams’, which serves children and adolescents in situations of social vulnerability in the city of Itajaí/SC. The actions were intended to equip the group so that in the face of analyzing social and environmental issues they would have the autonomy to act as agents of change in the context in which they live from the understanding of interdependence and complementarity that exists between the natural landscape and culture, addressing the teaching of Natural Sciences in its interdisciplinarity, as a protagonist in the process of the formation of individuals. In this context, Environmental Education emerges as a tool to develop the socio-environmental problem in order to contribute to a reflection on the standard of ethical and ecological behavior, recurrent in our daily lives, in search of a practice to protect the quality of life. Reading the Landscape is used as an educational tool in the critical agenda, given that its research-action-participation methodology is triggered by the subject actually emerging in the construction process. Thus, an education is appreciated that values dialogue about explicit knowledge in search of alternatives to consider scientific knowledge, popular knowledge, cultural events and a new ethic in relations between society and nature. The workshops generated effective results regarding the understanding of these concepts and they were converted into actions based on serious information consistent with the local/global.

Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2007001500006
Abstract: objective: to determine the reliability of the baseline (bbab) and post occlusion (pobad) brachial artery diameters, brachial artery flow-mediated dilatations (bafmd) measurements, and to quantify the typical error of the measurements (tem). methods: internal consistency (2 measurements on the same day) was determined in 10 volunteers, whereas stability (2 measurements on separate days) was determined in 13 volunteers. all the volunteers looked healthy and were nonsmokers. the brachial artery images were obtained using a two dimensional doppler ultrasound instrument: a 14 mhz transducer was used. the distances between the intima-lumen interfaces were measured before and after the blood flow had been stopped by means of a cuff on the arm for five minutes. bafmd was considered as the percentile increase of pobad in relation to bbad. results: anova did not identify any significant differences between the measurements taken on the same and separate days. for bafmd, the intraclass correlation coefficients between the measurements taken on the same and separate days were: r = 0.7001 and r = 0.8420, respectively (p < 0.05). the variation coefficients were 5.8% and 12.4% and the relative smes were 13.8% and 14.9%, respectively, for the measurements taken on the same and separate days. analysis of the bland-altman graphs indicated that the variables did not present heteroscedastic errors. conclusion: the bbad, pobad and bafmd measurements using the manual ultrasound technique were highly reliable for both the same and separate day measurements and therefore can be used to diagnose and monitor endothelial function.
