Abstract: Background There is a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in women of reproductive age. Methods This work studied the first two generations of offspring (F1 and F2) of Swiss mice from mothers fed one of two diets: SC (standard chow) or VitD- (vitamin D-deficient). Functional and developmental kidney measurements were taken. Results The first two generations of the VitD- group had higher blood pressure at 6 months of age than the offspring of the SC group as well as an increase in renin and AT1r expression. However, at all ages, both F1 and F2 VitD- mice had shorter glomerular diameters, and diet played a significant role in the total variation. Both the F1 and F2 generations of the VitD- group had more immature glomeruli than offspring from the SC group. Immature glomeruli begin to disappear at 10 days, but at this age, F1-VitD- mice had more immature and mature glomeruli than F1-SC mice. At 6 months of age, F1-VitD- mice exhibited more glomeruli, while F2-VitD- mice exhibited the same number of glomeruli as F2-SC mice, but fewer glomeruli compared to the F1-VitD group. Both diet and generation account for the total variation in the number of glomeruli. Decreases in urine output and podocin expression and increases in urea and creatinine in the urine were observed in F1 offspring. Conclusion These findings demonstrate that maternal vitamin D deficiency accompanies changes in the renal expression of important factors that may retard the maturation of glomeruli by extending the period of nephrogenesis.

Abstract: Objetivo. Objective. The objective of this article is to highlight the fact that cerebral aneurysms in children are a heterogeneous intracranial arterial disease. Material and methods. Nineteen children with 20 intracranial aneurysms were managed in our Hospital in the last four years. Results. The median age was 12 years (range 10 months - 17 years). 65 % of the aneurysms were saccular, 25% were fusiform, there was one infectious and one distal lenticulostriate aneurysm. Patients with saccular aneurysms were predominantly males and presented more commonly intracranial hemorrhage (92%). Fusiform aneurysms were dissecting in nature or chronic with intramural thrombus and mass effect. Therapy was tailored for every aneurysm type. Conclusion. Pedriatic aneurysms are a heterogeneous group of intracranial arterial diseases with different etiologies, diverse morphology and dissimilar clinical manifestations.

Abstract: subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis is a disease caused by dematiaceous fungi that develops mainly in immunocompromised patients. lesions are generally located on the lower limbs. the present report describes a case of phaeohyphomycosis in an immunocompetent patient in whom a subcutaneous abscess was located in an unusual site, on the left hemiscrotum. the abscess was treated successfully with oral fluconazole associated with surgical excision.

Abstract: The sarcoma is the generic nomenclature for neoplasm of mesodermal cells, which express in man and animals. Silent growth requires early diagnosis technique for identifying their proteins. The experimental model in vivo murine sarcoma 180-TG (TG-180), is widely used in research to provide the stimuli of infectious and neoplastic antigens. In this case, the technique of immunohisto-chemistry helps identify the expressions of tumor cell variants. The objective of the research was to characterize immunoexpression murine sarcoma TG 180, by immunohistochemistry, antibodies AE1/AE3, vimentin, CD3, CD 45, CD79α and S100A4. For this, murine sarcoma TG-180, was implanted subcutaneously in 20 mice “Swiss”, male, 30 days old, 28 g for 10 days. Samples were taken and subjected to immunohistochemistry, via use of HistoMouse-MA? kit. There was specifically labeled S100A4 and vimentin antibodies, indicative of poorly differentiated neoplasms fibroblasts. In fact, the model is established by identifying the origin of the cell, once identified, chemotherapeutic tests can also be performed. Neoplasia like these, when installed in man and animals, depending on the degree of aggressiveness requires treatment protocol varied between surgery and chemotherapy or combination of treatments.

Abstract: flexible multilayer plastic films may be used for the thermoforming of packages for meat products. in this case, the packages must meet the technical requirements of medium or high barrier to oxygen, depending on the characteristics of the food product, in order to avoid contamination during its shelf-life and consequently risk to human health. however, the thermoforming process alters the original characteristics of the plain films, which could render them inadequate to use, especially in the deepest corners of the packages, which are the critical points. this work addressed the thermoforming effects on the properties of two multi-layered plastic films, called medium barrier (mb), comprising pp/tie/pa6/tie/pa6/tie/ldpe, and high barrier (hb), where the central adhesive (tie) layer was replaced by a layer of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (evoh). the characterization of the films included investigations of thickness, oxygen permeability, and mechanical and optical properties.

Abstract: the investigation of the infant's simple and conditional discrimination learning demands an experimental planning that involves variables and appropriate situation features to population peculiarities. it was described the performances in discrimination tasks of four 12 until 24 month old infants in relation to: discrimination tasks, general conditions of the experimental procedure - to play between attempts; to play after sessions' conclusion; attempts' number or correct responses to reach learning criterion. the infants participated in one of two experiments, in a daycare center, where one apparatus to teach discrimination were located. constant analysis of the participants' behavior allowed identifies relations between the infants' responses and the nature of the social contact with the experimenter and the variety of stimuli with functions predicable or not in experimental planning. the manipulation of selected variables produced: the expansion of the infants' time in the experimental situation; the increase of the infants' responses directed to the apparatus and the increase of infants' correct choices.
