Nutrients Modulate T1r2 Transcript Levels in MIN 6 and Primary Cultured Taste Buds Cells under High Glucose Condition  [PDF]

Abstract: The sweet taste receptors comprised of T1r2 and T1r3, sense glucose concentrations in the gastrointestine. While hyperglycemia was reported to decrease the T1R2 and T1R3 tanscript levels in healthy subjects, no change was observed in type 2 diabetes patients. We investigated which glucose level and nutrients affect those transcript levels in MIN 6 and primary cultured taste buds cells using quantitative Reverse Trancription Polymerase Chain Reaction. High glucose diminished T1r2 transcript levels in MIN 6 and primary cultured taste buds cells. Resveratrol and its analogue augmented transcript levels of T1r1 and T1r2 above normal levels in MIN 6 cells in the medium with 25 mM glucose. Adenine, but not guanine, augmented T1r2 transcript levels of MIN 6 cells in the medium with 25 mM glucose. These results imply that nutrients in meals could affect sweet taste sensitivity by modulating T1r2 transcript levels in response to blood glucose levels.
Phylogenetic Analysis and Taste Cell Expression of Calpain 9 in Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)  [PDF]

Abstract: The calpains, calcium-activated neutral proteases, play important roles in calcium-regulated intra-cellular signal transduction cascades. Here we report the isolation and initial characterization of a cDNA encoding a calpain 9, digestive tract specific calpain, from catfish taste epithelium. This calpain 9 (Ip-CAPN9a) shares 61% identity with human calpain 9. Phylogenetic analysis provides evidence that catfish calpain 9 and the related enzymes from Oncorhynchus mykiss, Danio rerio, Xenopus laevis, Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus and Homo sapiens make up a distinct clade within the tissue-specific calpain family. Northern blot analysis reveals that Ip-CAPN9a is predominantly expressed in barbell and digestive tract, but not expressed in brain. An antibody against the N-terminal segment of Ip-CAPN9a recognizes cells within the taste buds in catfish barbells.

Abstract:


In this study, a catalog of β-cryptoxanthin (βCX) and its fatty acid esters (βCXFAs) in citrus fruits were constructed. The peel and pulp of citrus fruits from nine Japanese cultivars and one foreign cultivar were surveyed by supercritical fluid chromatography/triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (SFC/QqQMS). In each citrus sample, the major components were βCX and its laurate ester, myristate ester, palmitate ester, and oleate ester. However, the composition ratio of βCXFA varied with the citrus breed and between the pulp and the peel of the fruit in most cultivars. The SFC/QqQMS system could be used to obtain new information about βCXs and carry out further discussion on the feature and tendency of each citrus variety.


Rationality and Stability of Equilibrium in a Search-Theoretic Model of Money  [PDF]

Abstract: In this short note, I examine the rationality of money-search equilibrium in a basic second-generation money search model, which is a perfectly divisible goods and indivisible money model. I then show that only an inflationary economy can generate a socially and individually rational stable equilibrium. On the basis of this finding, I demonstrate that there is no loss of generality in an analysis that assumes dictatorial buyers in an inflationary economy, since the properties of a dictatorial buyers model are identical to those of a general inflationary economy model. The result of this paper is especially useful for empirical applications since we are generally incapable of finding data showing bargaining power. This result also alerts us against employing the second-generation model to analyze a deflationary economy and commodity money.

Abstract: Industrial development in Japan is accompanied by massive migration from agricultural to industrial areas. In a modified Harrod-Domar model, this paper compares two steady states, the first and the second, which emerge before and after the termination of such migration, respectively. Then, the paper shows that employment rates must be lower in the second steady state. Further, by examining the effects of fiscal policy, the paper shows that the balanced budget multiplier exceeds unity, and fiscal policy raises households’ disposable income and consumption.

The time evolution of the equation of state w for quintessence scenario with a scalar field as dark energy is studied up to the third derivative (d3w/da3) with respect to the scale factor a, in order to predict the future observations and specify the scalar potential parameters with the observables. The third derivative of w for general potential V is derived and applied to several types of potentials. Abstract:

Disinfection was investigated in high-density ozone produced by dielectric barrier discharge under atmospheric pressure. Disinfection was studied on three-dimensional carriers made of hydrophilic vinyl-polysiloxane impression material and granular acrylic resin used for oral surgery. Experimental results indicate disinfection of spore-forming bacteria: Geobacillus stearothermophilus and Bacillus atrophaeus, and selected species of opportunistic pathogens: Aspergillus niger, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans.

Abstract: The deregulation of electric power industries is introducing around the world and electric power markets are operated under the deregulation. Also in Japan, JEPX (Japan Electric Power Exchange) operates a day-ahead market since April 2005. We have already analyzed the electric power market prices in the several markets including JEPX by autoregressive models. We compose simple regression equations, of which a dependent variable is the market price and explanatory variables are the demand and the market price of 24 hours ago. In this paper, we analyze JEPX price data in summer seasons from 2007 to 2013. In this period, the JEPX price is affected by many social phenomena such as Lehman Shock and East Japan earthquake disasters. We compare the determination coefficient and the coefficients of regression and investigate the change of coefficients over the years.
