The Effect of Atmospheric Plasma Paint Stripping on the Fatigue Crack Growth Properties of Aluminium Substrates  [PDF]

Abstract: Paint removal is a common maintenance requirement for aircraft as well as naval and land vehicles, since external paint gets damaged and loses much of its corrosion protection effectiveness with time. Paint removal is also conducted when metallic aircraft structures are inspected periodically for fatigue cracks and corrosion. The conventional methods of removing paint employed throughout the Canadian Forces mainly include chemical stripping and abrasive media blasting. Chemical stripping involves the use of hazardous chemicals, which are high in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAP). Abrasive media blasting typically results in a substantial quantity of solid waste consisting of paint and blast residues. Such waste is subject to control under increasingly stringent environmental and safety regulations and its disposal is costly. The new Atmospheric Plasma (AP) paint removal process purports to be a high chemical energy, low thermal energy (cold plasma process), that should not damage temperature sensitive substructures, such as heat treated aerospace aluminium alloys. Fatigue strength is one of the key properties in aircraft structures. In order for AP paint stripping to be accepted as an aerospace industry standard paint removal process, it must be thoroughly tested to demonstrate that it does not adversely affect the fatigue properties of the substrate. This paper investigates effect of the paint removal process on fatigue crack growth of 7075-T6 and 2024-T3 aluminium panels.

Abstract: During the lifetime of aircraft structures, paint removal and re-application cycles are conducted to restore appearance and to enable inspection for fatigue cracks and corrosion damages. Current paint removals processes, including chemical and abrasive media blasting, yield large amounts of volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants, and generate large quantities of waste which require proper disposal/treatment. They also have the potential to mask surface cracks and decrease the effectiveness of Liquid Penetrant Inspections (LPI). This study compares current paint stripping methods to a novel Atmospheric Plasma (AP) system, which claims to be a more environmentally friendly method. Aluminium and steel coupons were prepared with military aircraft quality topcoat and primer paint schemes and subjected to the three aforemen-tioned paint stripping processes. The results were then characterized in terms of paint removal effectiveness, potential damages to the metallic substrates, and effect on the LPI process. Hardness and conductivity measurements as well as metallographic sectioning and microscopy, were used to characterize the stripped samples. The results indicated that AP had no negative ramifications on detecting fatigue cracks in the substrates, and did not alter the temper, mechanical properties of the aerospace alloys studied. The AP process has the potential to replace current hazardous and less environmentally friendly paint removal methods; though a full systematic qualification and evaluation process is still required for it to be considered as an accepted industrial paint removal process.

Abstract: This review outlines the current knowledge on the use of enrofloxacin in veterinary medicine from biochemical mechanisms to the use in the field conditions and even resistance and ecotoxicity. The basics of biochemistry, the mechanisms of action and resistance and pharmacokinetics are presented. Then an overview of available veterinary products, their efficacy and their toxicity against target species, human and environment is provided.

Abstract: We reviewed the literature on incorporating considerations of cost-effectiveness, affordability and resource implications in guidelines and recommendations.We searched PubMed and three databases of methodological studies for existing systematic reviews and relevant methodological research. We did not conduct systematic reviews ourselves. Our conclusions are based on the available evidence, consideration of what WHO and other organisations are doing and logical arguments.When is it important to incorporate cost-effectiveness, resource implications and affordability considerations in WHO guidelines (which topics)?? For cost-effectiveness:The need for cost/effectiveness information should be dictated by the specific question, of which several may be addressed in a single guideline. It is proposed that the indications for undertaking a cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) could be a starting point for determining which recommendation(s) in the guideline would benefit from such analysis.? For resource implications/affordability:The resource implications of each individual recommendation need to be considered when implementation issues are being discussed.How can cost-effectiveness, resource implications and affordability be explicitly taken into account in WHO guidelines?? For cost-effectiveness:° If data are available, the ideal time to consider cost-effectiveness is during the evidence gathering and synthesizing stage. However, because of the inconsistent availability of CEAs and the procedural difficulty associated with adjusting results from different CEAs to make them comparable, it is also possible for cost-effectiveness to be considered during the stage of developing recommendations.° Depending on the quantity and quality and relevance of the data available, such data can be considered in a qualitative way or in a quantitative way, ranging from a listing of the costs to a modelling exercise. Abstract: This paper claims rigour and sensitivity for a methodology used to explore multiple sources of data and expose the essential characteristics of a phenomenon in the human sciences. A descriptive phenomenological methodology was applied in a study of the experience of ten people with osteoarthritis receiving ginger compress therapy. The application of the phenomenological attitude, with reduction, bracketing and imaginative variation, allowed multiple sources of data – written, pictorial and oral – to be explicated. The applied methodology used is described in this paper, with its six clearly defined steps illustrated by examples from the study. The findings demonstrate that phenomenological reduction enabled an indication of the potential benefits of ginger compress treatment as a therapy for people with osteoarthritis. Abstract: The usage of bibliometric indicators is widespread in the scientific and academic world, and has become a standard in order to assign research funds and to assess the results of those investments. The aim of this article is to offer, without any claims for comprehensiveness some reflections and advices for using these tools in a more conscious way, highlighting their limits and peculiarities. Apart from Impact Factor, many tools related to Open Access have been developed recently. The most valuable options are given by Scimago, a free tool by the CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas), and Eigenfactor, research project of the the University of Washington. The H-Index (or Hirsch Index), developed in 2005 by professor Jorge E. Hirsch at the university of California, offers a valid option to the previous bibliometric analysis tools: the H-Index attempts to reduce some excesses of the Citation Index, making compliant very prolific but low quoted authors, with less prolific and high quoted ones. Nel mondo scientifico e accademico l'uso di indicatori bibliometrici è ormai largamente diffuso ed è diventato un parametro di giudizio per assegnare fondi di ricerca e valutare i risultati degli investimenti. Lo scopo di questo articolo è quello di fornire, senza alcuna pretesa di completezza, spunti di riflessione e consigli pratici per un utilizzo consapevole degli indicatori bibliometrici più consolidati, segnalandone i limiti e le peculiarità. Oltre al più noto e discusso indicatore bibliometrico, l'Impact factor, sono stati sviluppati negli ultimi anni alcuni sistemi alternativi legati all'open acess. Le più valide alternative sono rappresentate da Scimago, strumento gratuitamente consultabile on-line nato da un gruppo di ricerca del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in collaborazione con alcune università spagnole e Eigenfactor, progetto di ricerca accademica non-commerciale sponsorizzato dal Bergstrom lab dell’Università di Washington. Molto affermato è infine l'H-index (o Indice di Hirsch), messo a punto nel 2005 da Jorge E. Hirsch professore all’Università della California di San Diego. Questo recente indice cerca di ridimensionare alcuni eccessi del Citation index, equilibrando e rendendo compatibili autori molto prolifici, ma con un basso numero di citazioni per articolo e studiosi meno produttivi, ma con un alto rapporto citazione/articolo.
Phi Zeta Delta: Growth of Perturbations in Parameterized Gravity for an Einstein-de Sitter Universe

Abstract: Parameterized frameworks for modified gravity are potentially useful tools for model-independent tests of General Relativity on cosmological scales. The toy model of an Einstein-de Sitter (EdS) universe provides a safe testbed in which to improve our understanding of their behaviour. We implement a mathematically consistent parameterization at the level of the field equations, and use this to calculate the evolution of perturbations in an EdS scenario. Our parameterization explicitly allows for new scalar degrees of freedom, and we compare this to theories in which the only degrees of freedom come from the metric and ordinary matter. The impact on the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect and canonically-conserved superhorizon perturbations is considered.
