Revista de Saúde Pública , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101997000700010
Abstract: introduction: the reference values (rv) of biological indicators are used in the interpretation of the results of such indicators in individuals occupationally exposed to chemical agents. the brazilian group for the establishment of reference values has worked on these definitions for the purpose of establishing rvs for several bioindicators in various regions of the country. in the present study, the rv for carboxyhemoglobin (cohb) was determined for the south of minas gerais. material and method: the cohb was analyzed by the beutler and west (1984) spectrophotometric method, optimized in our laboratory. in all the samples, analyses of some biochemical and hematological parameters were made to evaluate the health condition of a population of 200 volunteer non-smokers occupationally not exposed to co. each individual answered a questionnaire to obtain data pertinent to the interpretation of the results. the reference values were expressed as mean values ± standard deviation, with a 95% confidence interval, and an upper reference value. the statistical distribution of the results was made so as to enable comparisons between the results of groups of workers, rather than individual evaluations, to be made. results and conclusion: the mean value ± standard deviation was 1.0% ± 0.75; the 95% confidence interval was 0,9 - 1.1% and the upper reference value was 2.5%. by the t student test (p < 0.05), no difference was detected between the values related to sex, age or ingestion of alcoholic beverages. the reference values obtained were close to those reported for others countries.
Avalia??o da rela??o entre o polimorfismo C677T no gene para MTHFR e a concentra??o plasmática de homocisteína na doen?a arterial coronariana
Muniz, Maria Tereza C.;Siqueira, Erika R.F.;Fonseca, Rosana A.;D?Almeida, Vania;Hotta, Júlia K.;Santos, José E. dos;Cavalcanti, Maria do S.M.;Sampaio, Cláudio A.M.;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302006000600012
Abstract: objective: the aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of c677t methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (mthfr) polymorphism and correlate it with plasma homocysteine levels in coronary artery disease (cad). methods: ninety-three patients with documented cad from hospital universitário oswaldo cruz (recife, pe, brazil) and 108 healthy controls were evaluated. homocysteine and folate levels were determined by hplc and chemoluminescence, respectively, and lipid profile was considered. genotyping was done by rflp/pcr. results: the groups were homogeneous for the c677t polymorphisms. the homocysteine level in cases (11.7 μmol/l) was statistically different from that observed in controls (8.84 μmol/l, p< 0.05). it was also observed that 72% of the patients had homocysteine values above12 μmol/l while the control group presented only 32% in this range. there was no relationship between homozigosity for the c677t polymorphism and the homocysteine level (p= 0.634). we noticed statistical differences between folate levels from patients and controls (6.22 and 7.69 ng/dl, p< 0.05, respectively). however, there was no correlation between homocysteine and folate concentrations in the entire group (r= -0.202). comparing cases and controls, the odds ratio (or) when homocysteine is high and folate is low was or= 11.9; ci 95%= 4.16-34.42, p< 0.01. conclusion: a lack of correlation between c677t mutation and homocysteine level suggests that environmental factors and others genetic factors seem to exert more influence on homocysteine level in this population.

Bonotto, Ligia Beatriz;Moreira, Ana Tereza Ramos;Carvalho, Denise Siqueira;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492007000100011
Abstract: purposes: to evaluate the prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity in premature babies examined at the "hospital de olhos sadalla amin ghanem", coming from the "maternidade darcy vargas" during the period from june 1992 to june 1999. to describe the risk factors that cause a predisposition to develop retinopathy of prematurity in the "maternidade darcy vargas" and criteria to improve screening. methods: 286 premature babies were selected in accordance with the predetermined criteria (gestation period less than 37 weeks, first examination at 4-12 week of age, minimum of 3 ophthalmic examinations before being 180 days old and registration at the "hospital de olhos sadalla amin"). an analysis of the total group of premature babies was carried out, being classified into group 1 (without retinopathy of prematurity) and group 2 (with retinopathy of prematurity) and the factors related to presence or not of retinopathy of prematurity in the premature babies were described. in order to evaluate the frequency of retinopathy of prematurity and factors associated with its occurrence, the chi-squared or the fisher exact tests were used. margin of error 5%. results: 228 premature babies did not present sings of retinopathy of prematurity (group 1) and 58 presented signs (group 2). the prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity was 20%, 9% being in stage 1; 7% in stage 2; 4% in stage 3 and 1% in stage 4a. the most involved factors were: birth weight (p<0.0001), oxygen therapy (p<0.0000), birth age (p=0.0006), lung disease (p=0.0041), blood transfusion (p=0.0002), central nervous system alterations (p=0.0259), serious infections (p=0.0278) and apgar less than 7 in the first minute (p=0.0442). the premature babies that most needed treatment weighed less than 1,399 g and were 33 weeks old. conclusion: according to the data the prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity was 20%. the premature babies' risks of retinopathy of prematurity were concentrated on weight below 1,400 g and age of
A regulamenta??o do enfoque comercial no setor educacional via OMC/GATS
Siqueira, ?ngela C. de;
Revista Brasileira de Educa??o , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-24782004000200012
Abstract: the text indicates the entrepreneurial groups' growing interest in the educational field given the large amount of resources involved, presenting the perspective of including education, as a service, on the agenda of the general agreement on trade in services, as a world trade organisation directive. to this end, it analyses wto and gats documents, as well as proposals presented by some countries, demonstrating their interests in eliminating "barriers" to "free trade" in education. the text points out that the existence of national regulations and even the offer of public education can be challenged as practices which are harmful to the "free" offer of educational services and subject to wto sanctions allowing business groups to demand public resources and other benefits. should gats succeed, it runs the risk of converting education from a subjective public right into a process of simple commercialisation of educational packages (e.g. courses, systems of evaluation and certification, textbooks, uniforms, maps etc.). it concludes by indicating that such a perspective clearly endangers national sovereignty and autonomy, leading potentially to the loss of cultural diversity and local values, to the benefit of a process of cultural homogeneity. notwithstanding, it also highlights the emergence of movements opposing this tendency.
Terapia celular nas doen?as oftalmológicas
Siqueira, Rubens C.;
Revista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-84842009005000029
Abstract: advances in the field of stem cell therapy have provided promising results in the regeneration of tissues damaged by eye diseases for which treatment is so far unavailable. therapy based on stem cells to regenerate and repair is a hope for the restoration of visual function in individuals with ocular tissue irreversibly damaged by disease or trauma. until now, only limbal epithelial stem cells have a recognized clinical application in ophthalmology for the repair of the cornea. experience gained with this approach, may potentially help with the design of therapies based on stem cells to regenerate other eye tissues, in particular the retina. the use of adult stem cells to treat degenerative diseases of the retina has been tested in animals, as has their feasibility for use in humans. although many practical problems exist, there is general optimism among the medical and scientific community that therapy based on stem cells to restore visual function can become a reality in the not too distant future. this article reviews the current status and limitations of the application of stem cell therapy in the eye and considers future prospects of its use in the restoration of vision.

Th e Formation of Organisational Competences in the International Telecommunications Production Network
Afonso C. Fleury,Maria Tereza Leme Fleury
Brazilian Journal of Operations & Production Management , 2010,
Abstract: Competence building and management has been an issue frequently addressed in the literature, but it seldom has been referred to enterprises acting as part of production networks. The literature is still scarcer when the networks are international and include organisational units located in countries classifi ed as “emerging economies”. The main purpose of this study is to develop an analytical framework for the understanding of the confi guration of organisational competences in the distinct participants of international production networks: multinationals and their subsidiaries organising local production networks. Different types of subsidiaries create local relationships whenever they act as part of a supply network to serve the local markets (interfi rm relationship). At the same time, every subsidiary keeps an internal relationship with its parent company and respective headquarters (intrafi rm). This article focuses on the global networks of Telecommunications industry and more specifi cally in Brazil. The networks are essentially constituted by Telecom Operators and Specialised Equipment Suppliers. The fi eld research was done in a sample of six subsidiaries operating in Brazil. In every fi rm we studied the way in which competences were built. An analytical framework was built to analyse the subsidiary-headquarters relationships, the role played by the subsidiary in the local supply networks and the specifi c features of the distinct types of subsidiaries. The outcomes show that, in the Brazilian context, where the lack of regulatory constraints allows that multinational corporations (MNCs) operate under a high level of autonomy, the structure of the local supply chain tends to refl ect the structure of the chain at global level. In that case, the way in which the global leader, the MNC that exerts the governance of the chain, considers competence formation at the headquarters and at the subsidiary level, as well as the competences that exist ingrained in fi rms and institutions at local level, are the main determinants of the overall confi guration of competences

Circuits and Systems (CS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/cs.2013.43033
Abstract: Currently a large effort is being done with the intention to educate people about how much energy each electrical appliance uses in their houses, since this knowledge is the fundamental basis of energy efficiency programs that can be managed by the household owners. This paper presents a simple yet functional non-intrusive method for electric power measurement that can be applied in energy efficiency programs, in order to provide a better knowledge of the energy consumption of the appliances in a home.
