Proposed model for biomineralization of novel nanohydroxyapatite/vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotube scaffolds

Abstract: for the first time, the growth mechanism of biominerals formed on plate-like nanohydroxyapatite (nhap) electrodeposited on superhydrophilic vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (vamwcnt-o2) is presented and a model for the specific growth preference is discussed. vamwcnt-o2 films were obtained by microwave-assisted chemical vapor deposition method and funcionalized by oxygen plasma. nhap/vamwcnt-o2 nanocomposites were fabricated with a direct electrodeposition of the thin nhap films onto the vamwcnt-o2 films. the biomineralized "scaffolds" were obtained by soaking nhap/vamwcnt-o2 in simulated body fluid for 7, 14 and 21 days. results show that the carboxyl functional groups directly attached onto vamwcnt tips after oxygen plasma treatment were essential for the acceleration of the oh- formation and the deposition of plate-like nhap crystals.

Abstract: nanocomposites based on superhydrophilic vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (vamwcnt-o2) and nanohydroxyapatite (nhap) are of great interest in bone regenerative medicine. the biomineralization using simulated body fluid (sbf) has been extensively studied to evaluate the bioactivity of biomaterials. thus, the combination of nhap and vamwcnt-o2 is attractive and promising. the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro calcification of nhap/vamwcnt-o2 nanocomposites before and after the period of biomineralization in sbf. in vitro calcification of the extracellular matrix (ecm) of hob cells in culture after 24 hours was investigated through the assay of alkaline phosphatase. these promising in vitro results validate biomineralized nhap/vamwcnt-o2 as possible scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration.

Abstract: nanobiomaterials based on superhydrophilic vertically-aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (vamwcnt-o2) are promising for their properties and bone tissue biocompatibility. vamwcnt-o2 films with nanohydroxyapatite (nhap) aim to improve mechanical properties and biocompatibility of this new nanocomposite due to its resemblance to bone matrix structure. this study aimed to produce in vitro biomineralized nhap/vamwcnt-o2 nanocomposites using simulated body fluid (sbf) with two different phs (6.10 and 7.40) during 7 days to obtain a new surface design with higher crystalinity and better morphology of nhap/vamwcant-o2 nanocomposites. the objective is to obtain biomineralized nanobiomaterials to enable its applicability as "scaffold" to cellular support and consequent bone tissue formation, accelerating the osseointegration. layer densification has been achieved due to polycrystalline nanoapatites deposition on surface and between the biomineralized nhap/vamwcnt-o2 nanocomposites, without any heat treatment. therefore, through its characteristics and properties these nanocomposite applications can be considered extremely viable for acceleration of in vivo regenerative processes.

Abstract: Este artigo analisa o processo de produ o do mais novo centro de negócios de Salvador - a centralidade da área do Iguatemi. Valendo-se de uma discuss o teórica sobre a renda da terra, este trabalho utiliza categorias de análise que possibilitam desvendar o processo de valoriza o de trechos do solo urbano nessa cidade. Partindo da interpreta o de dados oriundos de projetos de planejamento municipal, estatísticas, legisla o de uso do solo, notícias da imprensa, este trabalho mostra que essa centralidade surgiu como resultado de um sistema integrado de a es de diferentes agentes governamentais e privados nos últimos 40 anos. O artigo revela que por trás de discursos oficiais de desenvolvimento urbano e de políticas governamentais de planejamento, desenvolveram-se agendas e práticas de um planejamento urbano invisível, que alocou recursos e materializou trabalho numa por o .solo virgem. da cidade do Salvador. Este processo resultou na eleva o do valor da renda fundiária dessa área, o que atendeu a interesses privados. Este estudo configura-se num esfor o de tornar o invisível visível e fornece algumas bases para o uso de novos e alternativos modelos de interpreta o da produ o do espa o urbano.

Abstract: the objective of this paper was to evaluate the modifications in milkfat properties with the addition of sunflower oil (so) and phytosterol esters (pe) and chemical interesterification. fatty acid composition, softening point and consistency were determined. the saturation degree of milkfat decreased with the addition of so and pe. consequently, milkfat presented lower softening point and consistency. chemical interesterification caused an increase in softening point due to the formation of higher amounts of trissaturated triacylglycerols with rearrangement. the incorporation of unsaturated fatty acids from so and pe by milkfat triacylglycerols after chemical reaction caused linearization of consistency curves.
Moving to a consumption-based tax system: a quantitative assessment for Brazil

Abstract: for many years, it has been a primary issue in tax policy whether the tax system ought to be built around income tax or consumption tax. much of the interest in tax policy arises from the widespread belief that taxes on income and savings tend to lower long-run income by retarding the creation and expansion of firms and by discouraging workers and investments. following this belief, brazilian government has proposed a tax reform which, basically, replaces tax on investment and labor with tax on consumption. in this paper, we develop a dynamic general equilibrium model with heterogeneous agents to guide our quantitative assessment of the economic and distributional implications of such tax reform. the model is calibrated in such a way that it matches some selected features of the brazilian economy. we also use the calibrated model to calculate the deadweight loss of each type of taxation and thus provide some rationality for that rearrangement in the tax system. the main result of the paper is that, even though the tax reform increases the asset accumulation, labor and output of economy, it also raises the welfare inequality as borrowing constrained individuals cannot take advantage of the drop in tax on savings.

Abstract: this article draws on the hypothesis that the brazilian criminal justice system is loosely coupled and that police inquiry, as an obligatory procedure, fulfils the role of establishing some degree of coordination of police activities and between the organizations of the criminal justice system. the validity of this instrument is challenged when belief in the capacity of the state to control crime is heavily shaken and replaced by demands for efficiency and greater coordination in the administration of justice. despite the desire for change, various factors come into play to maintain this investigative model.

Abstract: In this work we introduce the obstacle-mass constraint problem for a multidimensional scalar hyperbolic conservation law. We prove existence of an entropy solution to this problem by a penalization/viscosity method. The mass constraint introduces a nonlocal Lagrange multiplier in the penalized equation, giving rise to a nonlocal parabolic problem. We determine conditions on the initial data and on the obstacle function which ensure global in time existence of solution. These are not smoothness conditions, but relate to the propagation of the support of the initial data.
Yield, Water Use Efficiency and Physiological Characteristic of “Tommy Atkins” Mango under Partial Rootzone Drying Irrigation System  [PDF]

Abstract: This study was conducted to evaluate the yield, water use efficiency and physiologic characteristics of “Tommy Atkins” mango under partial rootzone drying. The experiment was carried out in an orchard of mango in the irrigated perimeter of Ceraíma, BA. Five treatments and six repetitions were used with one tree per experimental plot: 01—Full Irrigation, 100% of ETc, 02—100% of ETc with frequency of alternance (FA) of 15 days, 03—80% ETc with FA of 15 days, 04—60% of ETc with FA of 15 days, 05—40% ETc with FA of 15 days. The treatments were conductedfrom the beginning of flowering to the harvest of mango in an orchard irrigated by drip. There was no significant reduction in productivity of “Tommy Atkins” mango under PRD up to 40% of ETc and PRD with 40% ETc resulted in greater water use efficiency. There was no significant difference among the averages of photosynthetically active radiation, Qleaf; leaf temperature, Tl; internal CO2 concentration, Ci; transpiration, E; stomatal conductance, gs; photosynthesis, A; carboxylation efficiency, A/Ci; quantum efficiency of photosynthesis, A/Qleaf and instantaneous water use efficiency, A/E between full irrigation and PRD with different water depth. The increase in leaf temperature causes reduction in A/Qleaf and A/E, however, it increases the transpiration. Increased gs results in higher rates of E, A and A/Ci. The use of the PRD with 40% of ETc causes no interference in gas exchange, maintains the yield and increases water use efficiency in “Tommy Atkins” mango tree.

Abstract: in this article, we made a synthesis, a categorization attempt and a critical evaluation of the main models, methodologies and experiences of construction of sustainability indicators, attempting to verify and to establish parameters and criteria in their constitution. at the present time, the main experiences developed around of the world can be classified in two types: 1) the systems of indicators, derived from the model of the blue book of the commission of sustainable development of un; and 2) the indicators synthesis, that aim, in a single unit, to join data of economical, biophysics, social and institutional order. among such types of indicators, a great diversity of approaches is verified, with different emphasis. we discuss in this article the indicators' capacity to induce and to foment policies and structured well-based decisions.
