Feed efficiency of Nellore cattle selected for postweaning weight
Castilhos, André Michel de;Branco, Renata Helena;Corvino, Tatiana Lucila Sobrinho;Razook, Alexander George;Bonilha, Sarah Figueiredo Martins;Figueiredo, Leopoldo Andrade de;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982010001100023
Abstract: two nellore herds were compared, one selected for greater postweaning weight and the other, control, selected for average postweaning weight, to evaluate the effects of 29 years of selection on feed efficiency. sixty nellore males (41 selected and 19 control) averaging 205 kg and 267 days of age were evaluated in individual pens during performance test. performance and dry matter intake were used to determine the following feed efficiency traits: feed conversion; residual feed intake; residual gain; partial growth efficiency; relative growth rate and kleiber ratio. after the 112-day experimental period, control animals showed lower body weight when compared to selected animals, however, they did not differ for dry matter intake (% of body weight), rib-eye area and fat thickness at the 12th rib subcutaneous region and on the rump region. dry matter intake (kg/day) and average daily weight gain from selected animals were, respectively, 19.4% and 26.4% higher than the control ones. the highest average daily weight gain by selected animals promoted significant improvement, around 6%, on feed conversion; 70 g/day on residual gain; and 17% on kleiber rate. the other feed efficiency traits (residual feed intake, partial growth efficiency and relative growth rate) did not differ between herds. the 29-year selection for post-weaning weight did not affect feed efficiency of nellore cattle.

Lucila Sobrinho, T.;Branco, R.H.;Bonilha, S.F.M.;Castilhos, A.M.;Figueiredo, L.A.;Razook, A.G.;Mercadante, M.E.Z.;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982011000400030
Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate performance, efficiency parameters and phenotypic correlations among measurements of energy efficiency of nellore cattle selected for post weaning weight and classified according to residual feed intake, calculated by the difference between observed and predicted intake, based on average metabolic body weight and average daily gain. thus, animals were classified within three groups: high (> mean + 0.5 standard deviation, less efficient); medium (±0.5 standard deviation of the mean); and low (< mean - 0.5 standard deviation, more efficient) residual feed intake. no differences were observed at initial and final body weights, average daily gain and dry matter intake among groups. animals with low residual feed intake also had greater feed efficiency, feed conversion and partial efficiency of growth and did not differ from the other animals regarding to relative growth rate and kleiber ratio. residual feed intake was significantly correlated to feed efficiency (-0.25), feed conversion (0.25), partial efficiency of growth (-0.37) and dry matter intake (0.16) but it did not present significant correlation with body weight (0.04), average daily gain (-0.02), relative growth rate (-0.03) and kleiber ratio (-0.05). significant correlations were found between feed conversion and initial body weight (0.34) and average daily gain (-0.46). partial efficiency of growth presented significant correlation with all other efficiency parameters analyzed. residual feed intake has high potential in productive efficiency, when compared to the other energy efficiency measurements, being independent of growth and size of the animals.

Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/s0100-69912012000500006
Abstract: OBJETIVO: Realizar um estudo do tratamento das fraturas do c ndilo mandibular e discutir a terapêutica conservadora versus a cirúrgica. OBJECTIVE: To study the treatment of fractures of the mandibular condyle and discuss conservative versus surgical therapy. METHODS: We examined the medical records of 892 bucofacial traumas, from which we selected only those who had: reports of condylar fractures, isolated or associated with other facial bones, identification data, dental care history and treatment applied for the condylar fracture. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the conservative and surgical therapies were compared. RESULTS: Condyle fractures were present in 124 cases. Males represented 72.0% of the sample, the age group most affected being the one between 21 and 30 years. Conservative treatment was used in 61.0% of patients. CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment was predominantly used in patients over ten years old, victims of traffic accidents and falls, followed by assaults, firearms and sporting accidents.

Medeiros, Marilaine;Carvalho, Luciane B.C.;Silva, Tatiana A.;Prado, Lucila B.F.;Prado, Gilmar F.;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2005000500008
Abstract: context: sleep has an important function in the physical and emotional development of children. some studies suggest an association between impulsivity and sleep disorders. however, little is known about this association in schoolchildren aged 8 to 10 years. method: we studied 1180 children, 547 with sleep disorders (sd) and 633 without sd (control group), classified with sd questionnaires. within the sd group, 53 children with sleep-related respiratory disorders (srrd) and 521 children with non-respiratory sleep disorders (nrsd) were analyzed. we acessed emotional indicators of impulsivity with bender test. results: more sd children presented impulsivity than control group (p<0.05). more nrsd and 10 years old children presented impulsivity than control group of the same age (p=0.001). impulsivity and srrd were associated with 8 years old children (p<0.05). conclusion: children with sd, 8 years old children with srrd, and 10 years old children with nrsd presented higher proportion of impulsivity than control children.
Enunciative Texts Present in Physical Issues of Editions of a Brazilian National Exam as Possible Triggers of Socio-Scientific Discussions  [PDF]
Marcos Fernandes-Sobrinho
Creative Education (CE) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2018.92021
Abstract: In this article we identify and analyze texts on physics questions in seven editions of a Brazilian national exam, with the purpose of bringing contributions to teaching planning and pedagogical actions with the perspective of supporting the creation of socio-scientific discussions (SSD), capable of inducing students in their citizenship development, in view of the difficulties of being worked in Sciences/Physics teaching environments appointed by the literature. A Brazilian state was chosen as a field, whose locus included six municipalities and 12 public institutions of basic education. Given that the results seem to distort the reality of the school context, the aforementioned difficulties were then theoretically and empirically disassembled, proving to be potentially minimized with the establishment of trails that enable the teacher to work on SSD identified in materials of easy and universal access, which contributes with advancement in the field of Science-Technology-Society education.

Abstract: this article makes a sociological reflection on the most striking changes in the patterns and experiences of contemporary motherhood, based on existing studies and research, trying to place the debate surrounding this process. it assumes that choosing motherhood is a modern phenomenon consolidated in the course of the twentieth century as a result of the progress of industrialization and urbanization. with increased access to formal education and professional training, women will tend to take up positions in public space, while remaining responsible for raising their children, which turns motherhood into a reflexive choice, enabled by modern contraception (and conception). this choice, however, is marked by the relations of class, race and ethnic background, and gender. the article concludes that we are currently experiencing a transition period toward a new model of family and motherhood, whose basis it the ideal of equally balanced parental responsibility that, despite some progress, is still far from having been attained.
