Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-86922004000600005
Abstract: trunk extensors and flexors muscles imbalance is strong indication of the etiology of low back pain. the aim of the present study was to verify the effect of pilates? method upon trunk flexors and extensors isokinetic function. to do so, we selected 20 volunteers (16 women 34.06 ± 7.21 yrs; 4 men 33.5 ± 6.68 yrs) capable to perform the intermediate-advanced level of pilates? method (25 sessions) during 12 weeks. trunk extensor function was improved in all parameters evaluated (peak torque - 25%, p = 0.0004; total work - 28%, p = 0.0002; average power - 30%, p = 0.0002; set total work performed - 21%, p = 0.002). trunk extensors showed a slight increase in total work (10%, p = 0.0003) and set total work performed (10%, p = 0.002). the trunk flexors:extensors ratio were decreased after pilates? training (peak torque - 24%, p = 0.0001; total work - 23%, p = 0.002; average power - 25%, p = 0.01; set total work performed - 14%, p = 0.04). the pilates? method seemed to be an efficient tool to strengthen the trunk extensors muscles, thus attenuating the imbalance between the muscles involved in trunk extension and flexion.

Abstract: this work aimed to evaluate the quality of coffee seedlings (coffea arabica l.) produced in small plastic containers with artificial substrate supplemented with sources of organic components in different proportions. the experiment was carried out using the randomized block design, in a 3 x 6 factorial structure, with four replications in plots composed of small plastic containers. the first factor corresponded to the sources (cattle manure, earthworm casting, and turkey manure) and the second to the proportions (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%) in the artificial substrate (bioplant-café?) fertilized with osmocote? (npk 15-09-12). the characteristics evaluated were: seedling height, seedling stem diameter, number of pair of leaves, leaf area, shoot dry matter and root system dry matter. this work concluded that the earthworm casting added to the artificial substrate in proportion of 80% or by itself (100%) increases the leaf area of coffee seedlings and, as a consequence it provides a higher accumulation of dry matter in the shoot. the use of cattle (up to 30%) and turkey manure did not modify or reduced seedling height, seedling stem diameter, number of pair of leaves as well as the leaf area and decreased the accumulation of dry matter.

Menezes, Valdenice Aparecida de;Cavalcanti, Gabriela;Mora, Cristiana;Garcia, Ana Flávia Granville;Leal, Rossana Barbosa;
Brazilian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-82502010000100018
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate mothers' knowledge about the cariogenic potential of pediatric medicines. a total of 111 mothers were interviewed using a standardized form containing 15 questions relating to the association of pediatric drug use with dental caries and oral hygiene care. descriptive and inferential statistics (chi-square test and fisher's exact) were used at a significance of 5%. most of the mothers were aged 40 years or under (77.4%), high school educated (30.6%) and not working (50.5%). the association between medication use and dental caries or defects in teeth structure was mentioned by 35 (43.2%) mothers, 33 of whom (40.7%) cited this was due to the presence of sugar in the formulations. only 32 mothers (28.8%) performed oral hygiene for the child after drugs ingestion, although 81.1% (n = 90) had never received guidance on the importance of this practice. the type of occupation and maternal education level were not significant in these issues (p> 0.05). pediatric medicines can create problems for the teeth and a high percentage of mothers are unable to establish a clear cause and effect relationship with this association. therefore, the pharmaceutical industry needs to be more aware of this and should prepare pediatric medicines without the presence of sucrose.
Efeitos de dois parametros antropométricos no comportamento do sinal mecanomiográfico em testes de for?a muscular

Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-86922008000300012
Abstract: in spite of being a useful method on muscle contraction analysis, few studies have been dedicated to understand how some anthropometrical parameters can interfere in the mechanomyographic (mmg) signal properties. therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of skinfold thickness and arm circumference in the mmg signal behavior in the temporal and frequency domains at different levels of isometric contraction. twenty-one males (24.9 ± 7.8 years) and 21 females (20.7 ± 2.5 years), all right-handed, participated in this study. prior to the mmg signals collection, a maximum voluntary contraction test (mvc) was performed to further determine the five levels (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of cvm) used during the tests. the two groups performed isometric contractions in the five different levels while mmg signal was collected from the right biceps brachii muscle by a biaxial accelerometer. the root mean square value (rms), and the median frequency (mf) calculated from the mmg power spectrum were extracted from the mmg signals in x direction, which meant perpendicular to the muscle fibres direction. the bicipital skinfold thickness (bd_dc_b), and the circumference of the right arm, with and without contraction of elbow muscles flexors, have also been measured. the mf presented a decreasing behaviour with the increasing level of contraction; the rms value followed an increasing pattern, though. there were significant statistical differences (p < 0.05) for the anthropometric variables between groups. it is suggested that the rms value, differently from the mf, which can be disrupted by the tissues between the muscle and the transducer, should be better correlated with muscle force level.

Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-86922009000500008
Abstract: surface electromyography (semg), despite being widely used in biomechanical investigations, still presents massive questioning about the influence of the distance of the inter-electrodes (die) in the signal morphology, especially in isotonic contractions. thus, much of the research developed is still limited to the laboratory, where it is possible to establish better control over the recording and analysis protocols, which is not commonly observed in the clinical-sportive practice. therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effects of two electrodes placement protocols and the performance of isotonic contractions in the semg sign frequency domain. fifteen right-handed male subjects (aged 22.8 ± 3.5 years) performed dynamic contractions of the right brachial biceps with load estimated in 20% of the maximum voluntary contraction in three different cadences (30, 45 and 60 bpm). the semg signals were registered by two channels with dies of 4.2 and 13 cm, respectively. the semg signals assessment was based on the median frequency of the potential spectrum of the signal, calculated via fast fourier transform. die and cadence were defined as factors (two-way anova; α = 0.05). no statistical differences or any interaction between both factors were observed in the three cadences (p> 0.05). regardless of the distance used between electrodes, an investigation in the semg signal frequency domain in dynamic tasks should be avoided, even from reduced dies, as suggested in the literature, since variations in the torque and muscular length may disrupt the signal and hence its interpretation.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate whether the organizational actions that offer resources for diversity (women in general, black people and people with disabilities) are perceived as fair. The theoretical framework used was based on the theory Multiprincípio Miller (1976). This theory holds that the distribution of resources can be considered fair not only based on the principle of equity / meritocracy, but also on the principles of equality which aims at a common destination for individuals and the principle of necessity which sees the distribution of resources as fair for one who has difficulties in satisfying your needs for yourself. To this end, it was conducted an exploratory study on the quantitative method. Data were obtained from a scale developed for this study. The sample consisted of 253 persons (52% women, 84% Caucasian and 94% without disabilities). Data analysis was based on the descriptive statistics and inferential. The results indicated that the actions under study are predominantly perceived as fair when based on the principle of equity, but there are differences of perception, considering the gender, race and whether or not peop
