Is Altruistic Behavior Associated with Major Depression Onset?
Takeo Fujiwara
PLOS ONE , 2009, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0004557
Abstract: Background Previous cross-sectional study showed altruistic behaviors were harmful on major depression (MD). It is needed to investigate the impact of altruistic behaviors by its contents on the development of MD prospectively. Methodology/Principal Findings The National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) in 1995–1996 and the MIDUS Psychological Experience Follow-Up study in 1998 were analyzed (weighted N = 563). Financial support of 10 or more dollars per month had a significant impact on the development of MD in comparison to no financial support (OR: 2.64, 95% CI: 1.05–6.62). Unpaid assistance and providing emotional support were not significantly associated with the development of MD in later life. Conclusions/Significances Those who provide financial contribution to individuals other than family members can be at risk of developing MD.
Violence and Asthma: A Review
Takeo Fujiwara
Environmental Health Insights , 2008,
Abstract: Recent research shows that exposure to community violence is, directly and indirectly, associated with asthma. This article reviews the findings on the impact of violence on asthma, and the pathways for the association of violence and asthma are suggested: 1) exposure to violence is directly associated with asthma, mainly through dysregulation of sympathetic-adrenal-medullary (SAM) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, 2) exposure to violence is associated with the change of susceptibility of outdoor air pollution on asthma, probably through the change of an immune response, and 3) behavioral change due to exposure to violence (e.g. keeping children indoors) leads to more exposure to indoor pollutants. The suggested framework may be useful to develop health policy on asthma in high-violence communities.
Development of simulation package 'ELSES' for extra-large-scale electronic-structure calculation
Takeo Hoshi,Takeo Fujiwara
Physics , 2008, DOI: 10.1088/0953-8984/21/6/064233
Abstract: An early-stage version of simulation package ' ELSES' (Extra-Large-Scale Electronic-Structure calculation) is developed for electronic structure and dynamics of large systems, particularly, nm-scale or 10nm-scale systems (www.elses.jp). Input and output files are written in the Extensible Markup Language (XML) style for general users. Related pre-/post-simulation tools are also available. Practical work flow and example are described. A test calculation of GaAs bulk system is shown to demonstrate that the present code can handle systems with more than one atom species. Several future aspects are also discussed.
Theory of composite-band Wannier states and order-N electronic-structure calculations
Takeo Hoshi,Takeo Fujiwara
Physics , 1999, DOI: 10.1143/JPSJ.69.3773
Abstract: From the order-N electronic-structure formulation, a Hamiltonian is derived, of which lowest eigen state is the generalized or composite-band Wannier state. This Hamiltonian maps the locality of the Wannier state to that of a virtual impurity state and to a perturbation from a bonding orbital. These theories are demonstrated in the diamond-structure solids, where the Wannier states are constructed by a practical order-N algorithm with the Hamiltonian. The results give a prototypical picture of the Wannier states in covalent-bonded systems.
Domain boundary formation in helical multishell gold nanowire
Takeo Hoshi,Takeo Fujiwara
Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1088/0953-8984/21/27/272201
Abstract: Helical multishell gold nanowire is studied theoretically for the formation mechanism of helical domain boundary. Nanowires with the wire length of more than 10 nm are relaxed by quantum mechanical molecular dynamics simulation with tight-binding form Hamiltonian. In results, non-helical nanowires are transformed into helical ones with the formation of atom pair defects at domain boundary, where the defective atom pair is moved from an inner shell. Analysis of local electronic structure shows a competitive feature of the energy gain of reconstruction on wire surface and the energy loss of the defect formation. A simple energy scaling theory gives a general discussion of domain boundary formation.
Large-scale electronic structure theory for simulating nanostructure process
Takeo Hoshi,Takeo Fujiwara
Physics , 2006, DOI: 10.1088/0953-8984/18/48/006
Abstract: Fundamental theories and practical methods for large-scale electronic structure calculations are given, in which the computational cost is proportional to the system size. Accuracy controlling methods for microscopic freedoms are focused on two practical solver methods, Krylov-subspace method and generalized-Wannier-state method. A general theory called the 'multi-solver' scheme is also formulated, as a hybrid between different solver methods. Practical examples are carried out in several insulating and metallic systems with 10^3-10^5 atoms. All the theories provide general guiding principles of constructing an optimal calculation for simulating nanostructure processes, since a nanostructured system consists of several competitive regions, such as bulk and surface regions, and the simulation is designed to reproduce the competition with an optimal computational cost.
Dynamical brittle fractures of nanocrystalline silicon using large-scale electronic structure calculations
Takeo Hoshi,Takeo Fujiwara
Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1143/JPSJ.72.2429
Abstract: A hybrid scheme between large-scale electronic structure calculations is developed and applied to nanocrystalline silicon with more than 10$^5$ atoms. Dynamical fracture processes are simulated under external loads in the [001] direction. We shows that the fracture propagates anisotropically on the (001) plane and reconstructed surfaces appear with asymmetric dimers. Step structures are formed in larger systems, which is understood as the beginning of a crossover between nanoscale and macroscale samples.
Impact of One-Year Methadone Maintenance Treatment in Heroin Users in Jiangsu Province, China
Guohong Chen and Takeo Fujiwara
Substance Abuse: Research and Treatment , 2012,
Abstract: Context: Although the effectiveness of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is well-established in many countries, it is a relatively new therapy for heroin users in China. Jiangsu Province, a relatively wealthy province, set up 4 MMT clinics in February 2006. No previous studies have evaluated the impact of MMT in a wealthy Chinese province. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of a 1-year MMT among heroin users in Jiangsu Province. We investigated the impact of the treatment by examining the following outcomes: 1) reduction of heroin use, 2) increase of appropriate sexual intercourse, 3) reduction of antisocial behavior, 4) increase of better social and family relationships, and 5) HIV prevalence among heroin users in MMT clinics. Design and Setting: Repeated cross-sectional surveys were conducted before and after heroin users in Jiangsu Province received at least 1-year of treatment in the MMT clinics. A questionnaire survey was implemented for those who agreed to participate from March to April 2006, before the initiation of MMT (N = 554). The second survey was from August to September 2007 and was administered to those who received MMT for more than 1 year (N = 804). One hundred and ninety-six patients who were investigated in both surveys were included in a longitudinal study to evaluate the factors attributable to behavior change. Results: MMT helped in reducing the percentage of heroin injection and also improved social and familial relationships. Antisocial behavior, including theft, prostitution, and dealing in heroin, decreased after 1-year treatment in the MMT clinics. However, the percentage of patients using condoms was not statistically significant. No case was found to be HIV-positive among those who received more than 1 year MMT. In the longitudinal study of 196 patients who participated in both surveys, no specific demographic variables were found to be associated with heroin use, anti-social behaviors after 1-year MMT. Conclusions: MMT was thought to reduce heroin use, antisocial behaviors and HIV prevalence, and increased appropriate sexual intercourse behaviors and better social and family relationships among heroin users in a wealthy province in China, which was true regardless of gender, age, marital status, or working status.
Association of Parental Psychiatric Morbidity with their Altruistic Behaviors and Sense of Obligation to Children in the United States
Takeo Fujiwara and Cynthia Lee
Clinical Medicine Insights: Psychiatry , 2012,
Abstract: Previous studies have suggested that altruistic behaviors for children and grandchildren (ABC) have a complex mechanism for psychiatric morbidity among parents and grandparents. The interaction between ABC and sense of obligation to children/grandchildren (SOC) may help to provide a better understanding of the association between ABC and psychiatric morbidity. In this study, we seek to investigate the association between the interaction of ABC and SOC and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depression (MD) using a nationally representative sample of middle-aged parents/ grandparents in the United States (N = 2,193). Among women, feeling obligated was associated with MD regardless of ABC status. Among men, having SOC and providing informal assistance or financial support was associated with GAD morbidity. Further research that elucidates the complexity of the interaction of ABC and SOC on psychiatric morbidity among parents/grandparents is needed.
