Efficacies of the new Paclitaxel-eluting Coroflex Please? Stent in percutaneous coronary intervention; comparison of efficacy between Coroflex Please? and Taxus? (ECO-PLEASANT) trial: study rationale and design

Abstract: In the comparison of Efficacy between COroflex PLEASe? ANd Taxus? stent(ECO-PLEASANT) trial, approximately 900 patients are being prospectively and randomly assigned to the either type of Coroflex Please? stent and Taxus Liberte? stent via web-based randomization. The primary endpoint is clinically driven target vessel revascularization at 9 months. The secondary endpoints include major cardiac adverse events, target vessel failure, stent thrombosis and angiographic efficacy endpoints.The ECO-PLEASANT trial is the study not yet performed to directly compare the efficacy and safety of the Coroflex Please? versus Taxus Liberte? stent. On the basis of this trial, we will be able to find out whether the Coroflex Please? stent is non-inferior to Taxus Liberte? stent or not.ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00699543.Previous randomized trials have shown the efficacy of a slow-release polymeric sirolimus-eluting stent (Cypher?, Cordis, Warren, NJ, USA), paclitaxel-eluting stent (Taxus?, Boston Scientific, Natick, MA, USA), and zotarolimus-eluting stent (Endeavor?, Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) over bare metal stents in reducing neointimal hyperplasia, late luminal loss, and angiographic restenosis leading to decreased target lesion revascularization [1-11] The Paclitaxel-eluting Coroflex Please? stent is a newly developed drug eluting stent using the Coroflex? stent platform combined with the drug paclitaxel contained in a polymer coating[12]In the PECOPS I, which was one-arm observational study, the results of Coroflex Please? stent were within the range of other Paclitaxel-eluting coronary stents [12,13] Compared with binary restenosis rate of 7.9% in Taxus IV trial, Coroflex? Synthetic Biomimetic Membranes and Their Sensor Applications

Abstract: Synthetic biomimetic membranes provide biological environments to membrane proteins. By exploiting the central roles of biological membranes, it is possible to devise biosensors, drug delivery systems, and nanocontainers using a biomimetic membrane system integrated with functional proteins. Biomimetic membranes can be created with synthetic lipids or block copolymers. These amphiphilic lipids and polymers self-assemble in an aqueous solution either into planar membranes or into vesicles. Using various techniques developed to date, both planar membranes and vesicles can provide versatile and robust platforms for a number of applications. In particular, biomimetic membranes with modified lipids or functional proteins are promising platforms for biosensors. We review recent technologies used to create synthetic biomimetic membranes and their engineered sensors applications.
A case of hypereosinophilic syndrome presenting with intractable gastric ulcers

Abstract: We report a rare case of hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) presenting with intractable gastric ulcers. A 71-year-old man was admitted with epigastric pain. Initial endoscopic findings revealed multiple, active gastric ulcers in the gastric antrum. He underwent Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) eradication therapy followed by proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy. However, follow-up endoscopy at 4, 6, 10 and 14 mo revealed persistent multiple gastric ulcers without significant improvement. The proportion of his eosinophil count increased to 43% (total count: 7903/mm3). Abdominal-pelvic and chest computed tomography scans showed multiple small nodules in the liver and both lungs. The endoscopic biopsy specimen taken from the gastric antrum revealed prominent eosinophilic infiltration, and the liver biopsy specimen also showed eosinophilic infiltration in the portal tract and sinusoid. A bone marrow biopsy disclosed eosinophilic hyperplasia as well as increased cellularity of 70%. The patient was finally diagnosed with HES involving the stomach, liver, lung, and bone marrow. When gastric ulcers do not improve despite H pylori eradication and prolonged PPI therapy, infiltrative gastric disorders such as HES should be considered.
TAILOR: Transgene Activation and Inactivation Using Lox and Rox in Zebrafish

Abstract: The ability to achieve precisely tailored activation and inactivation of gene expression represents a critical utility for vertebrate model organisms. In this regard, Cre and other site-specific DNA recombinases have come to play a central role in achieving temporally regulated and cell type-specific genetic manipulation. In zebrafish, both Cre and Flp recombinases have been applied for inducible activation, inactivation and inversion of inserted genomic elements. Here we describe the addition of Dre, a heterospecific Cre-related site-specific recombinase, to the zebrafish genomic toolbox. Combining Dre-based recombination in zebrafish with established Cre/lox technology, we have established an effective strategy for transgene activation and inactivation using lox and rox (TAILOR). Using stable transgenic lines expressing tamoxifen-inducible CreERT2 and RU486-inducible DrePR fusions, we demonstrate that Cre and Dre retain non-overlapping specificities for their respective lox and rox target sites in larval zebrafish, and that their combinatorial and sequential activation can achieve precisely timed transgene activation and inactivation. In addition to TAILOR, the successful application of Dre/rox technology in zebrafish will facilitate a variety of additional downstream genetic applications, including sequential lineage labeling, complex genomic rearrangements and the precise temporal and spatial control of gene expression through the intersection of partially overlapping promoter activities.

Abstract:

Radar Cross Section (RCS) is one of the most considerable parameters for ship stealth design. As modern ships are larger than their predecessors, RCS must be managed at each design stage for its reduction. For predicting RCS of ship, Radar Cross Section Analysis Program (RACSAN) based on Kirchhoff approximation in high frequency range has been developed. This program can present RCS including multi-bounce effect in exterior and interior structure by combination of geometric optics (GO) and physical optics (PO) methods, coating effect by using Fresnel reflection coefficient, and response time pattern for detected target. In this paper, RCS calculations of ship model with above effects are simulated by using this developed program and RCS results are discussed.?

Abstract: For the retaining wall and technologies to protect river levee, many patents were applied and numerous new technologies were developed according to the installation method and material. This study installed a magic retaining wall block, which was developed as new technology product to protect river levee from running water, in actual size experimental water channel and evaluated the hydraulic performance and the stability of technology based on the increase in the flow velocity and discharge by steps. This study divided the experiment into a total of six steps and conducted it accordingly. According to the experiment results, there was no deformation of the surface of the magic retaining wall block or any soil loss at the bottom either, under the condition of maximum flow velocity of 5.37 m/s (discharge of 7.40 m3/s). To analyze the occurrence of scour and the possibility of soil loss at the bottom of a structure due to a high flow velocity, this study conducted an image analysis of Case 6 under the condition of maximum discharge, using a drone. According to the results of an analysis through the drone, there was no soil loss or flow change due to a scour at the bottom of the magic retaining wall block. The results of this study will serve as references in designing a technology applying a magic retaining wall block, and present the methods and procedures to evaluate and verify the development of any further new technology.

Association of the UCP-1 single nucleotide polymorphism A-3826G with the dampness-phlegm pattern among Korean stroke patients

Abstract: Background Patients with stroke have various syndromes and symptoms. Through pattern identification (PI), traditional Korean medicine (TKM) classifies the several syndromes and symptoms of stroke patients into five categories: Fire-heat (FH), Dampness-phlegm (DP), Yin-deficiency (YD), Qi-deficiency (QD) and Blood-stasis (BS). DP has been associated with obesity and hyperlipidemia. Uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1), which plays a major role in thermogenesis and energy expenditure can increase the risk of obesity and can be related metabolic disorders. In this study, we elucidated the association of three polymorphisms located in the UCP-1 promoter and coding region with DP among Korean stroke patients. Methods 1,593 patients with cerebral infarction (583/DP, 1,010/non-DP) and 587 normal subjects were enrolled. The genotypes A-3826G, G-1766A and Ala64Thr (G+1068A) for each subject were determined by polymerase chain reaction with TaqMan probes and five percent of subjects were re-genotyped by sequencing method to confirm the accuracy of genotyping. The results were analyzed using a multiple logistic regression model to evaluate the genetic associations: the UCP-1polymorphisms of normal versus those of DP subjects and those of normal versus those of non-DP subjects. Results A significantly higher percentage of subjects in the DP group possessed the A-3826G G allele than the A allele (OR=1.508, p=0.006). Furthermore, the number of subjects with the GG type of A-1766G was significantly lower in the non-DP group than the normal group in the recessive model (OR=0.606, p=0.042). In addition, an analysis of the relationship among 2 SNPs of UCP-1 and lipid serum concentration showed that the serum level of HDL cholesterol was significantly higher in subjects with the A-3826G G allele in the normal group (p=0.032). Serum triglyceride and HDL cholesterol were also associated with the A-1766G variant in the recessive model (p=0.002, p=0.046). Conclusions These results suggest that that the A-3826G and A-1766G UCP-1 polymorphisms, which are related to obesity, might be candidate genetic markers for the DP pattern in the TKM diagnosis system.
Design and Implementation of an Omni-Directional Underwater Acoustic Micro-Modem Based on a Low-Power Micro-Controller Unit

Abstract: For decades, underwater acoustic communication has been restricted to the point-to-point long distance applications such as deep sea probes and offshore oil fields. For this reason, previous acoustic modems were typically characterized by high data rates and long working ranges at the expense of large size and high power consumption. Recently, as the need for underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) has increased, the research and development of compact and low-power consuming communication devices has become the focus. From the consideration that the requisites of acoustic modems for UWSNs are low power consumption, omni-directional beam pattern, low cost and so on, in this paper, we design and implement an omni-directional underwater acoustic micro-modem satisfying these requirements. In order to execute fast digital domain signal processing and support flexible interfaces with other peripherals, an ARM Cortex-M3 is embedded in the micro-modem. Also, for the realization of small and omni-directional properties, a spherical transducer having a resonant frequency of 70 kHz and a diameter of 34 mm is utilized for the implementation. Physical layer frame format and symbol structure for efficient packet-based underwater communication systems are also investigated. The developed acoustic micro-modem is verified analytically and experimentally in indoor and outdoor environments in terms of functionality and performance. Since the modem satisfies the requirements for use in UWSNs, it could be deployed in a wide range of applications requiring underwater acoustic communication.
Natural Frequency Extraction Using Generalized Pencil-of-Function Method and Transient Response Reconstruction

Abstract: A technique for natural frequency extraction without a prior knowledge of the number of natural frequencies is proposed. The proposed scheme is based on the GPOF method with the overestimated number of natural frequencies, and it has been shown from simulation result that the proposed method is superior to the GPOF method. The method is applied to the extraction of the natural frequencies of the thin wires whose exact natural frequencies are known. While the absence of the true natural frequency has much effect on the transient response reconstruction, the absence of the spurious natural frequency has little effect on the transient response reconstruction. Using the above property, true natural frequencies and spurious natural frequencies can be discriminated.
