Abstract: herein, we report two cases of pneumothorax and tension pneumopericardium after cardiothoracic surgery. both patients underwent pericardiotomy during the primary operation and developed pericardial tamponade as a complication. the treatment was tube thoracostomy, and both patients recovered completely.

Abstract: super austenitic stainless steels are denominated as such because they present good resistance to pitting corrosion and, also, offer excellent mechanical properties, which makes them one of the options for the production of components used by the petroleum industry. however, the superficial foundry hardening during the machining processes can change these properties. this paper aimed at investigating the effects of the machining operation on the surface of the super austenitic steel astm a351 cn3mn. samples of the casted steel suffered wear due to cylindrical machining, with different cutting speeds, using indexable carbide inserts of varied geometries. the analysis of the microstructure on the casting surface was accomplished by optical microscopy and the foundry hardened surface was determined by micro-hardness. the mechanical properties of the steel were determined by traction assay. the wear in the cutting inserts was accomplished in a mev.

Abstract: pitting corrosion resistance has been correlated to the morphological conditions of the surface: a smooth surface finishing decreases the potential for pitting. this study aimed at investigating the relationship between pitting corrosion resistance and surface roughness in the machined surfaces of superaustenitic stainless steel astm a744 grade cn3mn. the samples of the casting steel were cylindrically turned sunder different combinations of cutting conditions, producing different surface roughness patterns. the surfaces of the samples, as machined, were characterized by roughness and hardness. after the application of an accelerated immersion corrosion test, these surfaces were examined in a stereoscope and the weight loss by corrosion was also determined. it was revealed that the samples exhibited different corrosion resistance behaviors, according to the machining conditions applied. a correlation between pitting resistance corrosion and machined surface roughness was evident, and also, the weight loss due to the formation of pits. this study has identified that corrosion can be controlled through the selection of appropriate machining parameters.

Abstract: purpose: to assess the results found in immittance measurements using 226 hz and 1000 hz in neonates without hearing loss risks indicators (hlri) and to correlate them to transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (toaes) and also to study acoustic reflex using 226 hz probe tones. methods: assessments of 52 full - term neonates, being 26 males and 26 females on an age group from 11 to 51 days of life. anamnesis, meatoscopy, eoat, tympanometry using 226 and 1000 probe tones and ipsilateral acoustic reflex research were performed. for statistical analysis of the data the following tests were applied: wilcoxon test and mcnemar, mann-whitney test, test qui-square and kruskal-wallis anova. results: data were analyzed regardless gender and ears. in relation to toaes, (78.8%) were found. the found tympanometric curves using 226 hz probe tone were: a (55.8%), d (40.4%) and ar (1%), b (2.9%); and the found ones using 1000 hz probe tone were: a (74%), d (1%), b (14,4%) and blocked (10.6%). according to p - value, there was a relation between tympanometric and general reproductivity. on the sample, 81.7% of the ears indicated presence of acoustic reflex. conclusion: tympanometric curve using 1000 hz probe tone showed to be more adequate for detecting changes in the middle ear than 226 hz probe tone, changes in the middle ear had influence on amplitude by frequency band and general reproductivity of toaes. acoustic reflex using 226 hz probe tone was present in most of the neonates without hlri.

Abstract: this paper compares the bead characteristics of welds deposited of carbon steel tubular wires. three tubular wires of 1.2mm produced in brazil were used: rutilic (asme sfa-5.20: e71t-1/e71t-9/e71t-9m), basic (asme sfa-5.20: e71t-5/e71t-5m) and metal cored (asme sfa-5.18: e70c-3m). welding trials were performed in downhand position on thick (12 mm) low-carbon steel plates using a constant voltage power supply in negative wire polarity (cc-). welding current and voltage, and wire feed rate were monitored in all trials. for each tubular wire type, the shielding gas composition (75%ar-25%co2 and 100%co2) and wire feed rate (7 and 9 m/min) were changed, and other process variables, including electrode and arc lengths (16 mm and 3.5 mm, respectively) were kept constant throughout the experimental program. weld bead geometry parameters (penetration depth, reinforcement, width, fused and deposited areas, and weld dilution), presence of weld discontinuities, fusion zone microstructure and hardness were measured and compared for the different tubular wires. operational conditions that yielded weld bead characteristics favored for the welding of thick plates of structural steels on negative wire polarity were determined.

Abstract: this paper studies the effect of operational conditions on bead shape characteristics in fca welding with a brazilian made wire with rutilic flux (asme sfa-5.20: e71t-1/e71t-9/e71t-9m) of 1.2mm diameter. bead-on-plate downhand welding trials were performed on 12mm thick low carbon steel plates with a constant voltage power supply. a digital data logging system was used to measure the welding current and voltage, and wire feed rate. while the shielding gas composition (75%ar-25%co2 and 100%co2), wire polarity and feed rate (7 and 9m/min) were varied during the trials, the electrode extension (16mm) and arc length (3.5mm) were not changed. weld bead characteristics (penetration depth, width, and fused and deposited areas), the presence of discontinuities, bead microstructure and hardness were evaluated. welding conditions of high productivity (high deposition rate) associated to adequate bead characteristics were determined for the wire.

Abstract: a 26-year-old patient with a voluminous primary pulmonary hemangiopericytoma in the right lung, diagnosed through previous surgical biopsy, presented irreversible cardiac arrest during the hilar dissection portion of a right pneumonectomy. the patient did not respond to resuscitation efforts. autopsy showed total obstruction of the mitral valve by a tumor embolism. in cases of large lung masses with hilar involvement, as in the case presented, we recommend preoperative evaluation using transesophageal echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging or angiotomography. if injury to the pulmonary vessels or atrial cavities is detected, surgery with extracorporeal circulation should be arranged in order to allow resection of the intravascular or cardiac mass, together with pulmonary resection. we recommend that care be taken in order to recognize and treat this problem in patients not receiving a preoperative diagnosis.
