South African Journal of Animal Science , 2012,
Abstract: The objectives of this study were to analyse genotype distribution and sequence variations of candidate genes putatively associated with meat quality and disease resistance in exotic and indigenous Vietnamese pig breeds. For this purpose, 340 pigs from four indigenous and two exotic breeds were included in the analysis of the polymorphisms of the heart fatty-acid-binding protein (H-FABP), alpha 1 fucosyltransferase (FUT1), and bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) genes by the sequencing and PCR-RFLP methods. For H-FABP, 17 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected in indigenous pig breeds by direct sequencing of a fragment at intron 2 of the H-FABP gene. The mutation T1556C created a new restriction site for the enzyme MspI, which gave rise to new allelic variants in three indigenous pig breeds. In indigenous breeds, the frequency of the favourable alleles a and d at MspI and HaeIII sites of the H-FABP gene were low. Meanwhile, the frequency of the d allele at the HaeIII site in exotic breeds was significantly higher than those of indigenous pig breeds. No mutation was found in the RFLP-fragment of the FUT1 gene of four indigenous pig breeds by sequencing, while in the BPI gene two mutations were detected in the Tap Na breed. The resistant alleles of the FUT1 and BPI genes in the exotic breeds were significantly higher than those of indigenous pig breeds. Among the indigenous pig breeds, the Tap Na breed possessed a higher frequency of the resistant allele G of BPI gene than the remaining breeds. The T1556C mutation at H-FABP may be important for the genetic improvement of intramuscular fat content and breed. Tap Na may be a source of resistant alleles for local ecologies.
A Vietnamese version of the 14-item oral health impact profile (OHIP-14VN)  [PDF]

Abstract: Aim: To validate a Vietnamese short version (OHIP- 14VN) for use in epidemiological studies. Methods: The original English-language version was translated into Vietnamese, back translated and after some revisions tested for psychometric properties. Subjects (n = 724) were asked to self-administer a questionnaire but could ask for assistance. Convergent validity was tested by investigating associations between OHIP domain and total scores, and dichotomized self-reported satisfaction with 1) the dentition in general, 2) chewing function, and 3) esthetics. Groups validity was evaluated by comparing OHIP scores of subjects having ≤6 molars vs. >6 molars and tooth decay vs. no decay. Test-retest reliability was investigated in a convenience sample (n = 54) and expressed in Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICCs). Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach’s alpha and average interitem correlation coefficients. Results: Validity: all associations were in the hypothesized directions. Differences in mean OHIP total were statistically sig-nificant for all discriminative variables. OHIP scores completed with assistance were significantly lower than those from self-administered questionnaires and therefore analyzed separately. For both administration formats differences in mean scores were still significant for “satisfaction” but for having ≤6 molars or decay the differences lost significance for most domain and total scores. Reliability: ICCs ranged from 0.54 - 0.74. Internal consistency: Cronbach’s alphas for OHIP total scores were 0.93 (self-administered) and 0.91 (with assistance). Average interitem correlation coefficients ranged from 0.26 - 0.67 (self-administered) and 0.28 - 0.69 (with assistance). Conclusions: This Vietnamese version of the OHIP-14 demonstrated good construct validity and acceptable reliability for OHIP total scores however OHIP-14VN domain scores should be interpreted with caution.

Epidural steroid injection for sciatica: An analysis of 526 consecutive cases with measurements and the whistle test.

Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery , 2000,
Abstract: The effects of epidural injections of triamcinolone acetonide and bupivacaine in the treatment of sciatica were analyzed in a retrospective series of 526 consecutive cases with measurements. A new test (the whistle test) is described. There is a paucity of measureable parameters in reports on the subject in the literature, and many are not specific or symptom-oriented to sciatica. The procedure was performed by the same operator and reviewed one week post-operatively with measurements. 491 patients (93.35%) achieved excellent to good pain relief, backed by appropriate increases of straight-leg-raise measurements. But 17 patients (3.46%) of this group required surgery later. It is concluded that epidural steroid injection is a simple, cost-effective and minimally invasive treatment for sciatica, especially in the acute. It also serves as a method for crisis intervention and as a prognosticator.
Acute flaccid paralysis: a five–year review of cases managed by physiotherapy at the University College Hospital, Ibadan
TK Hamzat, TT Omotade
African Journal of Health Sciences , 2006,
Abstract: A 5-year (1999-2004) review of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases managed at the physiotherapy clinic of the University College Hospital, Ibadan Nigeria was carried out. Collection of data involved retrieving the records of all patients seen at the physiotherapy clinic during the study period, from which the paediatric cases were sorted out. The treatment records cards of patients with acute flaccid paralysis were identified and reviewed. Information on age, gender, immunization history, and specific physician diagnosis and discharge practice were collated. A total of 757 paediatric cases reviewed out of which 132 (17.4%) were AFP case, with mean age of 44.31± 33.03 months and a 1.2:1.0 male: female ratio. Sciatic nerve palsy accounted for majority (72.0%) of the AFP; only 43.2% of the patients had completed immunization before the onset; majority of the cases (78.8%) were referred to physiotherapy within 6 months of onset and the discharge pattern revealed that only 9.8% of the patients were formally discharged. With injection palsy accounting for majority of the AFP cases, the need for caution. In administration of intramuscular injections at the buttocks of children with febrile illnesses is suggested. Importance of adequate documentation of clinical information by clinicians is also emphasised. African Journal of Health Sciences Vol. 13 (1-2) 2008: pp. 28-32

Short Communication - Acute Retrocaecal Appendicitis: A Case Report
TT Marchie, O Ehimwenma
West African Journal of Medicine , 2011,
Abstract: Background: Acute abdomen is a clinical diagnosis and not a definitive one. The use of ultrasound in management and diagnosis of acute abdomen is rarely invoked in our environment. The importance of definite diagnosis in surgical and medical management cannot be overemphasized Objective: To report a case of ultrasound diagnosis of retrocaecal appendicitis. Methods: A nine-year-old male child presented with vomiting, vague abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and fever, which led to the following differential diagnoses; acute food poison gastro-enteritis, typhoid enteritis, malaria and acute appendicitis. He was investigated along these lines. He had abdominal ultrasonography and CT scan. Results: The ultrasound showed evidence of acute appendicitis. The findings on CT and surgery confirmed the diagnosis. Post-operatively, he made uneventful recovery. Conclusion: The use of ultrasound in acute abdomen is rarely invoked in our environment which may lead to unquantifiable consequences both in management and complications.
Case Report: Huge Expansile Swelling Of Forehead: An Unusual Presentation Of Frontal Mucocele.
FO Ogisi, TT Marchie
Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice , 2004,
Abstract: An unusual case of a huge and expensile swelling of the forehead with extension to right lateral aspect of the head was made of mixed cystic and solid consistency and was confirmed, as due to frontal mucocele on Ct Scan evaluation. The large mass had caused expansile erosion of the frontal bone with significant pressure effect on the adjacent structures. At operation a large quantity of inspissated sludge and mucoid material was evacuated, revealing extensive of the frontal bone significant enroachmet on the underlying brain tissue. The patient recovered satisfactorily following fronto – ethmoidectomy with drainage of the frontal sinus. Key Words: Expansile, fronto – Ethmoidectomy, CT Scan. Environmental pollution in Nigeria: The need for awareness creation for sustainable development
MI Evelyn, TT Tyav
Journal of Research in Forestry, Wildlife and Environment , 2012,
Abstract: The paper set out to examine the issue of environmental pollution and its attendant consequences on the Nigerian society. In doing so, the paper has on the basis of personal observation and secondary sources examined the effects of environmental pollution in Nigeria. The findings show that environmental problems in Nigeria generally are many, diverse in nature, and are caused by man’s interaction with nature (environment) for exploits in a number of ways-both in the cities; where industrial activities predominate, and rural areas; where agriculture thrives. The paper posits that man utilizes air for survival, harnesses land and water resources for domestic, commercial, industrial, agricultural and other purposes. Through these activities; man directly and/or indirectly create problems which are detrimental to his health/survival, well being, natural existence and stability. The paper observes that these problems are a consequence of environmental pollution which also degenerates into environmental degradation and several other hazards such as widespread epidemics, depletion of natural habitats, and thus; impede the socio-economic development of Nigeria as a nation. The paper recommends awareness creation and change in attitudes for effective environmental and resources management strategies as a way forward.
