Revista de Odontologia da Universidade de S?o Paulo , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-06631998000400010
Abstract: chemical-surgical preparation (c.s.p.) is responsible for shaping and cleaning the root canal, being these the main requirements for a correct filling procedure. therefore, this study attempted to evaluate the change of curvature angle of simulated root canals after chemical-surgical preparation. these root canals were made in blocks of epoxy resin with curvatures of 35 degrees, and instrumented according to the serial technique of paiva and antoniazzi, using type-k files, flexofile files (pre-curved and straight) and nitiflex files. the results showed that the smallest alteration in curvature was caused by the pre-curved flexofile files, followed by nitiflex files and pre-curved type-k files. the root canals instrumented with straight type-k and flexofile files showed the largest deformation in curvature. the pre-curvature of the files affects the deformation of the root canals, presenting statistically significant differences between the results obtained with straight and pre-curved flexofile and type-k files.

Santos, Alisson F.;Baldanzi, Giorgio;Leonart, Maria Suely S.;Nascimento, Aguinaldo J.;
Revista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-84842009005000091
Abstract: one of the most deleterious consequences of iron overload in thalassemia is the presence of non-transferrin bound iron (ntbi), a free radical that acts as a catalyst for free oxygen radicals, in particular for hydroxyl free radicals (oh.). these radicals oxidize both membrane lipids and proteins causing irreversible damage to biologically important molecules and cellular structures. treatment with iron chelators has been important to improve survival of these individuals. the aim of this work was the study on the effects of deferoxamine (dfo) and deferiprone (dfp) on erythrocytes under the pro-oxidative action of tbhp isolated from normal individuals and patients with β-thalassemia. the in vitro action of deferoxamine and deferiprone on the oxidative metabolism of erythrocytes from β-thalassemic patients treated at the centro de hematologia e hemoterapia do paraná (hemepar), brazil, under the pro-oxidative action of tbhp was studied. methemoglobin concentrations, reduced glutathione (gsh), hemolysis indexes and the enzyme activities of g6-pd and gr were determined. the oxidation indexes were higher in erythrocytes of β-thalassemic individuals than those from normal individuals. treatment of the normal and β-thalassemic erythrocytes with dfo and/or dfp protected against the formation of gsh promoted by tbhp.

Bulletin of the World Health Organization , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0042-96862001001100005
Abstract: objective: to compare the effectiveness of two training strategies for improving essential newborn care in the state of pernambuco, brazil. methods: eight hospitals were selected, divided into two groups of four, and paired by geographical, structural, and functional characteristics. doctors and nurses working at hospitals in group 1 were given a conventional 5-day training course. those in group 2 were given the same manual used by group 1 but the training course was organized as self-directed learning, with the participants having 5 weeks to complete the course. participants' knowledge was tested at baseline, immediately after the course, and 3-6 months later. participants' practices were observed before training and 3-6 months after training during 20 births and by interviewing 20 mothers before discharge at each hospital. findings: not all participants completed all of the tests. the scores on the tests of knowledge improved more among those in group 2 than those in group 1 when the answers were classified as right or wrong, but there was no difference between groups when a scoring method was used that classified answers as correct, partially correct, incorrect, or missing. practices related to thermal control after birth improved among those in group 2 after training but practices related to thermal control on the ward worsened. the promotion of breastfeeding improved in both groups. conclusion: there was no difference between the two training strategies, although self-directed learning was cheaper than conventional training. neither strategy brought about the expected improvements in the quality of care. other interventions in addition to training may be needed to improve care.
