Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2012000600008
Abstract: objectives: to assess sleep characteristics of adolescents infected by hiv, and to ascertain whether psychosocial aspects are associated to the quality of sleep. methods: a cross-sectional study assessing 102 hiv-infected adolescents of both genders, aged between 10 and 20 years-old and 120 controls. data collection was performed by applying the sleep disturbance scale for children, the epworth sleepiness scale, and the pediatric quality of life inventory. results: a sleep disturbance prevalence of 77.4% was found in patients, and a 75% prevalence in controls, and there was correlation between quality of sleep and of life. hiv-infected adolescents scored higher for sleep breathing disorders and had higher prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness. conclusions: hiv-infected adolescents had similar quality of sleep compared to healthy adolescents. this may be explained by the steady improvements in daily living as a result of successful anti-retroviral therapy, and by the vulnerability that affects brazilian adolescents living in major urban centers.

Abstract: this study aimed at validating a method for the simultaneous determination of cholesterol and cholesterol oxides in processed meat products by high performance liquid chromatography (hplc), using a diode array and a refractive index detectors. initially five methods and eight chromatographic conditions were tested. the selected method was that of sander et al. [25], which presents the following steps: lipid extraction, cold saponification and extraction of non-saponifyable material. the chromatographic conditions established were: nova pak cn hp column (300 x 3.9mm, 4μm); column temperature of 32oc; mobile phase of hexane/isopropanol (96 + 4) with a flow rate of 1.0ml/min, diode array detector fixed at 210nm and a refractive index detector. the method was validated by way of the recuperation, repeatability, detection limits, quantification limits and comparison of the results obtained with the two detectors. the identification of the cholesterol and cholesterol oxides was by comparison of the retention times of the samples with those of the standards, absorbance spectra and co-chromatography, with confirmation by mass spectroscopy. under the chromatographic conditions used, cholesterol and the following cholesterol oxides were separated: colesta-4,6-dien-3-one, 20a-hidroxycholesterol, 25-hydroxycholesterol, 5,6a-epoxicholesterol, 5,6b-epoxycholesterol, 7a-hidroxycholesterol, 7b-hidroxycholesterol and 7-cetocholesterol. cholesterol, 7-cetocholesterol and 5,6b-epoxycholesterol were confirmed in the samples analyzed. cholesterol and 5,6b-epoxycholesterol were quantified using the refractive index detector and 7-cetocholesterol using the diode array detector.

Gama, Sueli Rosa;Carvalho, Marilia Sá;Chaves, Célia Regina Moutinho de Miranda;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007000900032
Abstract: cardiovascular risk factors were investigated in 356 children 5 to 9 years of age who were treated at a primary care center located in a low-income area in greater metropolitan rio de janeiro, brazil. lipid profile, nutritional status, food intake, and lifestyle were evaluated. 10.7% of the children were overweight, 68.4% had some type of dyslipidemia, and 18.6% showed high ldl-c. to describe the food intake pattern, the answers to the qualitative food questionnaire were submitted to multivariate cluster analysis, producing six basic groups: traditional brazilian cooking; "modern" food (including diet and light products); fried food; sweets and soft drinks (mixed with other groups); and other poorly defined groups. the high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (beginning in childhood) and the evidence of inadequate dietary habits indicate that a preventive family-focused strategy is needed to change the dietary pattern of low-income groups towards healthier eating.
Experimental dermatophytosis in hamsters inoculated with Trichophyton mentagrophytes in the cheek pouch
ARRUDA, Maria Sueli Parreira de;GILIOLI, Silvia;VILANI-MORENO, Fátima Regina;
Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46652001000100006
Abstract: this study presents the results of t. mentagrophytes inoculation in the cheek pouch of the hamster, an immunologically privileged site. forty two animals were used: 21 inoculated with 106 fungi in the cheek pouch (group 1) and 21 inoculated initially with 106 fungi in the foot pad and 15 days later in the cheek pouch, with the same amount of fungi (group 2). animals were sacrificed at 20 hours, 3, 7, 14, 30, 60, and 120 days; samples from inoculated cheek pouch, and foot pads submitted to the foot pad test (fpt), were collected. independent of group and time of evolution of infection, animals did not develop delayed hypersensitivity evaluated through the fpt. the pre-inoculation of fungi in the foot pad did not change the morphology of lesions induced in the cheek pouch. therefore, in animals of group 1 and 2, the introduction of the fungus in the cheek pouch resulted in focal lesion composed of a sterile acute inflammatory infiltrate, with abscess formation that evolved to a macrophagic reaction, and later to resolution even in the absence of immune response detectable by fpt. our results indicate that in spite of the important role of the immune response in the spontaneous regression of dermatophytosis, other factors are also an integral part in the defense against this fungal infection.

Vilani-Moreno, Fátima Regina;Arruda, Maria Sueli Parreira de;
Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 1992, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46651992000600003
Abstract: the authors investigated the specific immunological competence of 31 patients with dermatophytosis using tricophytin antigen. among them, 54.8% showed reaction to the delay phase (48 h) in the following proportions: tinea inguinale, 75%; tinea pedis, 61.5%; tinea unguium, 50% and tinea corporis, 20%. other 62.5% showed positive result to the early phase (30 m). the association between these reactions revealed that, although the majority of cases with early positive reaction showed negativity to the delayed reaction, 20.8% presented positivity to both phases of the reaction. out of the non-reactive patients to the delayed phase, 8 were submitted to the other cutaneous tests such as ppd, streptokinase, candidin, vaccinia and dncb and showed preserved cellular immunity in 75%. these results suggest that, while using this reaction for immunological evaluation of patients with dermatophytosis, one should consider the overall immune status of the patient, the presence of early hypersensibility and the localization of the infection.

Castro, Sueli Aparecida de;Furegato, Antonia Regina Ferreira;Santos, Jair Licio Ferreira;
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692010000400020
Abstract: segregated individuals with mental disorders, families without support or guidance concerning disease and treatment, and unprepared professionals are some of the factors that can contribute to re-hospitalizations. this study identifies sociodemographic variables, clinical conditions, diagnoses and treatments in order to identify their relationship with psychiatric re-hospitalizations. this is an exploratory and descriptive study. a form was used to search data in patients' files from 2006 and 2007 in a regional psychiatric facility. a total of 681 re-hospitalizations were identified, the majority due to treatment abandonment. length of hospitalization was higher for women between 40 and 49 years of age. positive associations of sociodemographic data with previous hospitalizations were found, such as type of discharge, and physical and mental condition, which is in accordance with the literature. readmissions are associated with sociodemographic and clinical indicators. these findings can guide care and public policies regarding mental health.
