Journal of Tropical Medicine , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/869758
Abstract: The association between abnormal cervical cytology and HIV infection status in women was evaluated to correlate with CD4 cell count and viral load in HIV-positive patients with the presence of low-grade (LSIL) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL). Cervical samples were collected at the Tropical Disease Hospital, Maternal and Child Healthcare Hospital and at the Nascer Cidadão Maternity Hospital in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. An Ayre’s spatula was used to collect samples from the ectocervix and a cytology brush to collect samples from the endocervix. Of a total of 237 women, 125 were HIV positive and 112 were HIV negative. Abnormal cytology (=21; 8.9%) was more common in the HIV positive group (=15; 12.1%) compared to the HIV-negative group (=6; 5.4%) (=0.05). Cytological abnormalities were not found to be associated with immunosuppression, defined as CD4 count < 200 cells/mm3. A higher frequency was found between higher viral loads (>10,000/mm3) and the presence of abnormal cytology. Pregnant women, irrespective of whether they were HIV positive or negative, were less likely to have lesions compared to the nonpregnant women in the same groups. The higher frequency of abnormal findings in Papanicolaou cytology in HIV-positive women with higher viral loads suggests the association between preinvasive cervical lesions and human immunodeficiency.

Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology , 2011,
Abstract: In this study, the effect of rootstock on grafting through metabolomic analysis of latex (Hevea brasiliensis) samples was verified by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and multivariate data analysis. Sixteen metabolites present in the latex cytosol were characterized by NMR. PCA analysis showed that the latex samples of the RR and GR groups can be differentiated. The GR group samples present a metabolic profile similar to the RR group samples, while the RG group is in an intermediate position between RR and GG groups. Sucrose and formate contributed greatly to the separation obtained by PCA, presenting a good correlation between the results. 1H NMR was an efficient technique to differentiate latex samples from different types of rootstocks and grafting and in the future could be used to predict rubber production by latex analysis.

Abstract: iron is essential for all organisms and its availability can control the growth of microorganisms; therefore, we examined the role of iron metabolism in multibacillary (mb) leprosy, focusing on the involvement of hepcidin. erythrograms, iron metabolism parameters, pro-inflammatory cytokines and urinary hepcidin levels were evaluated in patients with mb and matched control subjects. hepcidin expression in mb lesions was evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. the expression of ferroportin and hepcidin was evaluated by immunofluorescence in paucibacillary and mb lesions. analysis of hepcidin protein levels in urine and of hepcidin mrna and protein levels in leprosy lesions and skin biopsies from healthy control subjects showed elevated hepcidin levels in mb patients. decreases in haematologic parameters and total iron binding capacity were observed in patients with mb leprosy. moreover, interleukin-1 beta, ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor and soluble transferrin receptor/log ferritin index values were increased in leprosy patients. hepcidin was elevated in lepromatous lesions, whereas ferroportin was more abundant in tuberculoid lesions. in addition, hepcidin and ferroportin were not colocalised in the biopsies from leprosy lesions. anaemia was not commonly observed in patients with mb; however, the observed changes in haematologic parameters indicating altered iron metabolism appeared to result from a mixture of anaemia of inflammation and iron deficiency. thus, iron sequestration inside host cells might play a role in leprosy by providing an optimal environment for the bacillus.
