Abstract: In Taiwan, in corresponding to the policy of reducing CO2 emission, reforming current energy structure, and saving energy, the National Energy Program (NEP)-Smart Grid General Project Phase 1 was implemented. The objectives of this project are meant to enhance the robustness of the power grid, reduce greenhouse gas emission, increase the penetration rate of renewable energy and develop smart grid industry in Taiwan. This study will introduce the positioning of the Smart Grid General Project among overall smart grid development, the results of Phase 1, the smart grid technology commercialization process of Phase 2, and the promotion model with collaboration between industry, universities and research units.
A Study of the Health-Related Quality of Life and Work-Related Stress of White-Collar Migrant Workers

Abstract: Little is known about the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and work-related stress and its risk factors among white-collar businessmen and management workers that migrate to high-income developing countries. A structural questionnaire survey was administered to 156 white-collar Taiwanese management personnel of representative companies of their industries in Taiwan, who were assigned long-term job positions in China. Questionnaire content included demographics and medical history, self-reported physical and mental conditions, personal lifestyle and behavior, Beck Depression Inventory, and information on HRQoL. White-collar migrant workers reported a high prevalence of alcohol consumption (72.4%) and perceived work-related stress (62.2%), and a lower prevalence of regular exercise (12.2%). Workers with higher levels of perceived work-related stress reported more alcohol consumption, a history of hyperlipidemia, and a higher prevalence of self-reported neck pain, poor sleep, and mild/moderate/severe depression. In our primary multivariate risk model to determine lifestyle and work-related stress variables and HRQoL, perceived work-related stress and a feeling of depression negatively impacted both the Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores of the SF-36 health survey. Hyperlipidemia and self-reported neck pain were associated with significantly lower PCS scores, whereas cardiovascular disease, gastric ulcer, and poor sleep were associated with statistically lower MCS scores. White-collar migrant workers are generally younger with high socioeconomic status. Perceived work-related stress and a feeling of depression indirectly affect HRQoL. Hyperlipidemia, self-reported neck pain, cardiovascular disease, gastric ulcer, and poor sleep also had a significant negative impact on HRQoL.
Effects of polymerase, template dilution and cycle number on PCR based 16 S rRNA diversity analysis using the deep sequencing method

Abstract: The PfuUltra II Fusion HS DNA Polymerase (Stratagene) with higher fidelity showed lower amount of PCR artifacts and determined lower taxa richness than the Ex Taq (Takara). More importantly, the two polymerases showed different efficiencies for amplifying some of very abundant sequences, and determined significantly different community structures. As expected, the dilution of the DNA template resulted in a reduced estimation of taxa richness, particularly at the 200 fold dilution level, but the community structures were similar for all dilution levels. The 30 cycle group increased the PCR artifacts while comparing to the 25 cycle group, but the determined taxa richness was lower than that of the 25 cycle group. The PCR cycle number did not changed the microbial community structure significantly.These results highlight the PCR conditions, particularly the polymerase, have significant effect on the analysis of microbial diversity with next generation sequencing methods.Microbial diversity in sediment or soil environments is very high, but the exact number of the taxa richness remains elusive [1]. The estimated bacterial species ranged from nearly 103 [2] to over 106 [3] in a gram of sediment sample. Nevertheless, the figure has never been verified because of the low throughput of the traditional 16 S rRNA clone library method. Determining 16 S rRNA short variable tags using the pyrosequencing provided an unprecedented sequencing depth with tens to hundreds of thousands of tags per sample [4,5], and the method regenerated people's interest in measuring and comparing the microbial taxa richness in various samples [6-8]. Nevertheless, two major types of problems about the 16 S rRNA pyrosequencing process were shortly revealed.One was that, in any determined samples, the rarefaction curve, particularly for the unique operational taxonomy units (OTU) (100% similarity), never approached asymptotic. Abstract: A study was conducted to compare the performance of typical winter wheat cultivars certificated from the 1970s and latter,and now widely grown in the Hebei plain.The results show that,when all the cultivars from different ages are grown under the same conditions with adequate water and fertilizer supply,the new cultivars produce higher yield than the old ones.The unit area kernel numbers have a significant positive relationship with yield improvement.Kernel numbers per spike and 1000-grain weight do not change much between the old and new cultivars,and no significant relations exit between the two and yield increase.Harvest index is positively related to yield increase.It is observed that modern cultivars have higher harvest index and lower plant height than those of the old cultivars.Above-ground biomass of the cultivars developed after the 1990s dose not decrease with shortening plant height.Not much differences in wax content,SPAD value,and leaf water potential exist,but differences in specific leaf weight and ash contents are significant between the old and modern cultivars,and leaf ash content correlates with grain yield.

Deficiency of Adiponectin Protects against Ovariectomy-Induced Osteoporosis in Mice

Abstract: Adipokine adiponectin (APN) has been recently reported to play a role in regulating bone mineral density (BMD). To explore the mechanism by which APN affects BMD, we investigated BMD and biomechanical strength properties of the femur and vertebra in sham-operated (Sham) and ovariectomized (OVX) APN knockout (KO) mice as compared to their operated wild-type (WT) littermates. The results show that APN deficiency has no effect on BMD but induces increased ALP activity and osteoclast cell number. While OVX indeed leads to significant bone loss in both femora and vertebras of WT mice with comparable osteogenic activity and a significant increase in osteoclast cell number when compared to that of sham control. However, no differences in BMD, ALP activity and osteoclast cell number were found between Sham and OVX mice deficient for APN. Further studies using bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) demonstrate an enhanced osteogenic differentiation and extracellular matrix calcification in APN KO mice. The possible mechanism for APN deletion induced acceleration of osteogenesis could involve increased proliferation of MSCs and higher expression of Runx2 and Osterix genes. These findings indicate that APN deficiency can protect against OVX-induced osteoporosis in mice, suggesting a potential role of APN in regulating the balance of bone formation and bone resorption, especially in the development of post-menopausal osteoporosis.

Abstract: We report here the far infrared absorption and reflection spectra of the mixed crystals ZnxCd1-xTe with small x in the temperature range of 4.2-300 K and the frequency region of 20-350 cm-1. The local and quasi-local modes induced by Zn and ZnTe in CdTe and the CdTe-like 2TA two-phonon absorption are observed. The frequencies of the modes are estimated by useing the mass-defect model combined with Green's function method. The random element isodisplacement (REI) model is used to calculated the two mode behaviors of the mixed crystals and to best fit the reflection spectra. Besides, the temperature dependence of the phonon absorption and the relaxation factor of CdTe-like and ZnTe-like modes are calculated and explained.
Role of Endobronchial Ultrasound in the Diagnosis of Bronchogenic Cysts

Abstract: Diagnosis of bronchogenic cysts is possible with computed tomography, but half of all cases present as soft tissue densities. Two such cases are highlighted where asymptomatic bronchogenic cysts that presented as soft tissue masses were evaluated by endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS). After studying the ultrasound image characteristics, the diagnosis was confirmed using EBUS-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA). The first case had ultrasound findings of an anechoic collection, and the aspirate was serous with negative microbiologic cultures. The second was an echogenic collection within a hyperechoic wall. Needle aspirate was purulent and cultured Haemophilus influenza. The diagnosis of a bronchogenic cyst complicated by infection was made, and the lesion was surgically resected. This potential for EBUS in the diagnosis of bronchogenic cysts and in identifying complications such as infection should be considered in the management of such cases. 1. Introduction Bronchogenic cysts are ventral foregut duplication cysts that arise from aberrant embryonic development. They are typically located near the large airways just posterior to the carina. Although many are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally, complications such as infection, airway obstruction, fistulation, vascular compression, and malignant transformation have been reported [1]. Bronchogenic cysts are lined with cartilage and pseudostratified columnar epithelium. Noninvasive diagnosis is possible with computed tomography (CT) using typical characteristics of a round, well-circumscribed, unilocular mass [1]. Approximately half of the cysts are homogeneous with a near water density (0–20 Hounsfield Units) that reflects their serous nature. The remainder have attenuation values of soft tissue because of viscid mucoid contents making them indistinguishable from neoplasms [2]. Whilst the additional use of magnetic resonance may help to further characterize these lesions, they can still be confused for malignancies with central necrosis. An exploratory thoracoscopy or thoracotomy may then be necessary to confirm the diagnosis [3]. We present two cases where endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) was performed on patients with asymptomatic bronchogenic cysts. After studying the ultrasonographic images, transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) was performed at the same sitting to confirm the diagnosis. Abstract: 为研究落叶松体细胞胚胎发生的分子机理,文章以日本落叶松×华北落叶松杂种无性系胚性细胞系Y35体细胞胚成熟阶段培养物的cDNA为实验组,继代培养阶段胚性愈伤组织的cDNA为对照组,利用抑制性消减杂交技(Suppression subtractive hybridization,SSH)构建了体细胞胚成熟阶段的差异表达基因文库.随机选取800个阳性克隆进行测序,共获得468个UniGenes,共将其分为19类,功能分析结果表明:这些UniGenes可能参与代谢、转录、信号转导、转运、细胞生长分裂、细胞结构、细胞命运、蛋白质合成与降解、防御等与个体发育密切相关的生物学过程.对部分ESTs的表达谱进行分析,结果表明这些ESTs均在落叶松体细胞胚胎发生的不同阶段特异表达.
