Ligang Xing, Yong Yin, Spring Kong, Jinming Yu
International Journal of Medical Physics,Clinical Engineering and Radiation Oncology (IJMPCERO) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijmpcero.2014.31009
Abstract:

Purpose: To evaluate the current status of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for early staged non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at main cancer hospitals in China. Methods and Materials: The questionnaire was sent by mail and email to 21 hospitals, which include the patient enrollment, treatment technique, dose and fractionation, quality control, disease control and side effects. Results: Nineteen hospitals responded. It was found that SBRT has been used for early staged NSCLC in most of the hospitals participating in the survey. The patient characteristics and techniques were relatively consistent, but there were many controversies regarding dose fractionation and quality control. Conclusions: SBRT for early staged NSCLC has been applied at main cancer hospitals in China. However, considerable variation exists. The establishment of clinical guidelines and standardized quality control are crucial for further improvement.

A Preliminary Study of Just-in-Time Methods for a Seamless Public Transportation Information Framework  [PDF]
Spring C. Hsu
Intelligent Information Management (IIM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/iim.2012.41001
Abstract: A seamless multimodal transit system has been a goal for transportation planners and users. Owing to the developments of advanced public transportation and telecom technologies such as automatic vehicle location (AVL) and real-time passenger information system, key just-in-time (JIT) concepts can now be realized in process design and coordinated scheduling to shape a seamless multimodal transit system. JIT refers to a production system that times both movements of goods during production and delivery from suppliers together. It meets the same logic for seamless multimodal services. Therefore, this study innovatively analyzes possible public transportation technologies for JIT uses; moreover, to layout the possible application frame-work of a transportation technology based JIT multimodal transit system for main station area in Taipei city. With this innovative framework, multimodal transit services can deliver to the right place at right time.

Function and Evolution of the Sox Multienzyme Complex in the Marine Gammaproteobacterium Congregibacter litoralis
Stefan Spring
ISRN Microbiology , 2014, DOI: 10.1155/2014/597418
Abstract: Core sets of sox genes were detected in several genome sequenced members of the environmental important OM60/NOR5 clade of marine gammaproteobacteria. However, emendation of media with thiosulfate did not result in stimulation of growth in two of these strains and cultures of Congregibacter litoralis DSM did not oxidize thiosulfate to sulfate in concentrations of one mmol L?1 or above. On the other hand, a significant production of sulfate was detected upon growth with the organic sulfur compounds, cysteine and glutathione. It was found that degradation of glutathione resulted in the formation of submillimolar amounts of thiosulfate in the closely related sox-negative strain Chromatocurvus halotolerans DSM . It is proposed that the Sox multienzyme complex in Congregibacter litoralis and related members of the OM60/NOR5 clade is adapted to the oxidation of submillimolar amounts of thiosulfate and nonfunctional at higher concentrations of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds. Pelagic bacteria thriving in the oxic zones of marine environments may rarely encounter amounts of thiosulfate, which would allow its utilization as electron donor for lithoautotrophic or mixotrophic growth. Consequently, in evolution the Sox multienzyme complex in some of these bacteria may have been optimized for the effective utilization of trace amounts of thiosulfate generated from the degradation of organic sulfur compounds. 1. Introduction Aerobic marine gammaproteobacteria affiliated to the OM60/NOR5 clade are widespread in saline environments and of ecological importance in several euphotic coastal environments [1]. It is thought that aerobic anoxygenic photoheterotrophy provides some members of this clade with a selective advantage against competing obligate chemoheterotrophic bacteria [2]. Besides light energy, the oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds to sulfate is utilized by a large number of heterotrophic proteobacteria as energy yielding process for mixotrophic growth. Several pathways for the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds to sulfate are known in bacteria, but most knowledge exists about a thiosulfate oxidizing multienzyme complex, which is encoded by a set of sulfur oxidizing (sox) genes [3]. It was found that the genes soxA, B, C, D, X, Y, and Z are present in most, if not all, bacteria that are able to oxidize thiosulfate to sulfate without forming a free intermediate [4, 5]. Hence, a common mechanism for the direct oxidation of thiosulfate to sulfate encoded by sox genes in bacteria is discussed. In a previous study the distribution of sox genes
The Golden Age of Immersion Theory in Topology: 1959-1973
David Spring
Mathematics , 2003,
Abstract: We briefly review selected contributions to immersion-theoretic topology, from S. Smale's immersion theory for spheres to M. Gromov's convex integration theory, during the early "golden" period from about 1959-1973. Historical remarks are included and technical concepts are presented informally.
General Balance Functions in the Theory of Interest
David Spring
Quantitative Finance , 2012,
Abstract: We develop an axiomatic theory of balance functions (future value functions) in the theory of interest that is derived from financial considerations and which applies to general regulated payment streams, including continuous payment streams. Balance functions exist and are unique up to an initial choice of deposit and investment accumulation functions. In terms of these balance functions we also construct a unique internal rate of return for each regulated payment stream that is an investment project. This theory subsumes and clarifies previous theories of internal rate of return functions for more specialized classes of investment projects.
Réflexions sur la valeur de la liberté : Mary Ann Shadd, la conscience anti-esclavagiste et la fonction de la lettre ouverte A Meditation on the Value of Liberty: Mary Ann Shadd, Anti-Slavery Conscience, and the Labor of the Public Letter
Suzanne B. Spring
By applying the lens of values as means and ends, this essay examines the public letters of anti-slavery reformer Mary Ann Shadd. It focuses on the articulative nature of Shadd’s epistolary rhetoric, and the rhetorical power of the public letter to serve as a genre of conscience within public structures of exchange. In drawing critical attention to Shadd’s embrace of critique and dissent, the essay figures the public letter as a means and end for accomplishing the anti-slavery work of mediating a collectivity and articulating a transvaluation of values.
