Iryna Arshava, Dina Nosenko, Ganna Nosenko, Anton Sayevich
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2013.43A045

In search of approaches to defining the psychological life history of an individual the contemporary personality psychologists address the individual differences in behavior reflecting the interplay of the specific real life situations and the new dynamic contextualized trait constructs which can cast light on the within-person causal dynamics. The participants of the researchthirty University-level student-athletes and 109 secondary college-level students, simultaneously pursuing the academic and athletic activities, were shown to display different levels of personality self-evolution under this specific situation depending on the sporting achievements attained. Clustering the samples (K-means algorithm) into the two groups each, which significantly differed on the personality variables, indicative of the self-evolution dynamics, showed that the higher was the level of sporting achievements the more significantly the participants appeared to differ on the patterns of coping strategies preferred, the emotional intelligence abilities, hardiness and dispositional resources of self-evolution acquired. Equally high levels of internal locus of control and the mental health continuum measures in both clusters of the university-level student-athletes can also be regarded as favorable outcomes of combining two significant life activities for stimulating the personality development.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2015.68091
Abstract: Our objective is to identify the factors that are responsible for the health and the psychological distress of the teaching personnel. The problem of mental health of the teachers in general and the teachers of Physical and Sporting Education in particular remains a worrying situation for the re-searchers. The speed of the metamorphoses which took place in the world of education generates an intensification of the work of the teachers whose consequences assign the teaching personnel. This series of changes did not settle without effect. Already, 3.7% of the Tunisian teachers suffer from psychic disorders (Ghachem, 2012). This distress results in a high frequency of anxiety, professional irritation and exhaustion as well as a low level of vitality lived by the teachers. There are many studies which showed that the educational work is in crisis, searching for meaning, with teachers living a state of ill-being. As part of our research, we focus on the major determinants of psychological health and well being of teachers of physical education and sports in Tunisia. 151 teachers with mean age (38.92 ± 10.62) answered the questionary of Houlfort & Sauvé (2010). Our study showed serious negative effects on the mental health of Tunisian teachers due to several triggers of stress and tension at work. In addition, these health troubles due to different working conditions were variable depending on age, seniority, gender and also on marital status. Which are the factors responsible for the health and the psychological distress of the teachers of physical and sporting education?

Panayiotis Shippi, M.S.
Biomedical Human Kinetics , 2012, DOI: 10.2478/v10101-012-0007-z
Abstract: Study aim: To examine the major social, cultural, and political factors determining sporting successes in very small countries at macro, meso, and micro levels through the example of Cyprus. Material and methods: The article is based partly on the analysis of statistics and documents and partly on a segment of a comprehensive investigation carried out by standardized questionnaire and in-depth interviews among all Cypriot Olympians participating in the summer Olympic Games (N=93). The response rate was 79.6%. Regarding some major characteristics (age, gender, sport) the researched population fairly represents the total population. Results: Little investment has been made in building sports facilities, the training of coaches, the support for sport science, and in the development of sport medicine. Elite sport has been reluctantly promoted by sport policy. Elite athletes had limited competition opportunities. Cypriot children with lower socioeconomic backgrounds and from villages had higher chances for becoming top-level athletes. Young girls hardly had any access to competitive sport. Conclusions: Based on the analysis of documents it can be stated that not only the smallness of the country and the small number of the population but also the poor sporting tradition and culture as well as inconsistent sport policy also contribute to the Cypriot elite athletes' sporting results. From the findings by questionnaire it might be concluded that the Cypriot children had no equal chances to become top athletes.

Grzegorz Bielec
Polish Journal of Sport and Tourism , 2012, DOI: 10.2478/v10197-012-0005-2
Abstract: Introduction. The development of a sporting career takes a course within a phased manner, the various stages are characterized by different goals and tasks. In competitive swimming there are many cases of athletes who achieved high sporting results in the category of children and youths and who soon after abandoned their interest in training. The aim of this study was to find the association between the sports achievements of 11-year-old girls competing in the 200 m backstroke events and their sports level in the subsequent years of their career. Material and methods. The results of the sporting careers of girls who ranked from 1st to 20th in the 200 m backstroke event in the Polish Correspondence Championships for 10 and 11-Year-Old Children in 2003 were presented. Their positions taken in subsequent editions of the summer Polish championship till 2009 were the criterion of their career development. An analysis of documents was used as a scientific method. The basis for the analysis were post-competition protocols listed on the official website of the Polish Swimming Federation. Results. Only 30% of the examined athletes took part in all main events intended for their age. Less than half of them participated in the Polish 17-18-Year-Old Junior Championships organized within the Nationwide Juvenile Olympics. 40% of the girls from the studied group ended their careers before the age of 15. Four basic variants of development of a sporting career were observed in the group. Conclusions. After analyzing the athletes' careers it can be stated that a high position in the national ranking of 11-year-olds does not guarantee significant sporting achievements in later years. In the studied group of girls the stroke and distance specialization had changed in most cases (80%).
