Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2002,
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigation was studying the influence of glucose metabolic control on diabetic nephropathy. The authors observed the effect of acarbose, insulin, and both drugs on the metabolic control and development of mesangial enlargement of kidney glomeruli in alloxan-diabetic rats. METHODS: Five groups of Wistar rats were used: normal rats (N), non-treated alloxan-diabetic rats (D), alloxan-diabetic rats treated with acarbose (AD), alloxan-diabetic rats treated with insulin (ID), and alloxan-diabetic rats treated with insulin plus acarbose (IAD). The following parameters were evaluated: body weight; water and food intake; diuresis; blood and urine glucose levels; and the kidney lesions: mesangial enlargement and tubule cell vacuolization. Renal lesions were analysed using a semi-quantitative score 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after diabetes induction. RESULTS: Diabetic rats showed a marked increase of glycemia, urinary glucose levels, diuresis, water and food intake, and weight loss, while the treated diabetic rats showed significant decreased levels of these parameters. The most satisfactory metabolic control was that of diabetic rats treated with acarbose + insulin. There was a significant mesangial enlargement in diabetic rats compared to normal rats from the third up to the 12th month after diabetes induction, with a significant difference between the animals treated with acarbose + insulin and non-treated diabetic rats. A difference between the animals treated with acarbose or insulin alone and non-treated diabetics rats was not seen. CONCLUSIONS: The authors discuss the results stressing the role of diabetic metabolic control in the prevention of diabetic nephropathy.

This research has the objective to identify from the remembrances of old teachers the relation between their conceptions of the natural world and the nature of society. The old teachers are from the state public schools from a city in the county of S o Paulo in 60's and 70's. It was found from reading the narratives, that the teachers describe nature with different conceptions. Looking at the nature/ society relationship, it is noticeable that a conflicted relation is established between the man and nature. It can be affirmed, in general, that man was presented as the one who destroys nature, being characterized by the teachers as bad and ignorant. Trying to understand how nature and its relationship to society are present in the remembrances of these masters can help us currently to build new ways of relating nature and society.

Política social e democracia: reflex?es sobre o legado da seguridade social
Teixeira, Sonia Maria Fleury;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1985, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1985000400002
Abstract: the article tends to approach the social political field from the citizenship development. as it is understood the roll of the rights and duties is established among the citizens whose condition is confered. in this way, the author tries to show that the social politics are state's interventions conditioned by the existent necessity and from the historical context in which they arise. thus, they can assume different forms such as the social assistance, social security and the state social welfare. the predominancy of either one of these forms in each society has shaped different models of state's intervention refering to the social questions, in more developed countries which differ according to the major or minor justice and impartiality of the social services advantageous systems. in latin america, the development of social policies faced specific problems that are analysed by the author.
