Abstract:

For building a biosensor, at least two enzyme sources can be employed. The pure enzyme has features with better selectivity and low stability. Crude extract presents better stability and wrong selectivity. Thus, one intermediate condition can be feasible joining both benefits of crude extract and pure enzymes. For that result, several procedures of extraction and semi purification of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzyme from banana (Musa sp.) were studied. The results showed that cleaned enzymatic extracts presented higher specific activities than crude extracts (2.8 up to 5.3 fold), despite the total protein concentration diminishing from 27% up to 72%, indicating that polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzyme was preserved in them. The biosensors with 125 AU mL-1 containing cleaned enzymatic extracts performed better by grinding or grinding plus sonication for 30 s. They were linear over the ranges of 5.9 × 10-6 mol·L-1 to 1.4 × 10-3 mol·L-1 and 7.9 × 10-8 mol·L-1 to 4.0 × 10-3 mol·L-1

Abstract: basic research may result in unexpected benefit in terms of progress in the understanding of mechanisms responsible for different diseases and their potential treatment alternatives. this is seen, for instance, when a specific situation, defined in clinical practice, may be translated into laboratory findings which suggest a new therapy for an unrelated disease, representing the inverse of the more usual bench-to-bedside path. during the past few years, the use of the monoclonal antibody trastuzumab, in the adjuvant and therapeutic context, has become of fundamental importance in the treatment of breast cancer with amplification/overexpression of her2, resulting in significant increase in survival rates. the observation that trastuzumab also induces cardiotoxicity, and the identification of mechanisms involved in this side effect, have allowed the investigation of these factors as a therapeutic alternative for dilated cardiomyopathy, in a highly interesting fashion.
Gênero, família e prote??o social: as desigualdades fomentadas pela política social

Abstract: this article analyzes the factors that establish social inequalities in the structuring and development of current brazilian society. it highlights the processes that are involved in the existing relations between genders, the social protection system, and labor market conditions in relation to the productive insertion of women. to conduct this reflection, it focuses on an analysis of the family as a space of differentiation and hierarchization of gender, and as a locus of a substantial portion of unpaid domestic work among women, along with the general consequences of this space of social reproduction. based on an analysis of data from brazil and latin america, it demonstrates the persistent ties of women to precarious labor, offered in a broad informal sector, alongside their growing participation in the labor market in an effort to reconcile responsibility for social protection with the need to increase family income.

Abstract: this paper aims to present and discuss a comprehensive / explanatory model, of ecosystem approach, on the process of transmission of dengue in the levels of micro and macro context, from the identification of the risks involved. dengue was considered a viral infectious disease of vectorial transmission that carries on its transmission dynamics, elements of the biological, behavioral, ecological, political and economic dimensions, that make it a complex problem and require a systemic approach to its control. thus, for the construction of modeling, we used the theoretical framework of social reproduction of juan samaja and its conditions of macro and micro-context, and the operating ecosystem approach, which sought to answer the question driving this construction: what are the risk situations for the transmission of dengue, considering the different dimensions of "social reproduction of health" at the local level? the enlarged view of the interrelationships among the various risk situations involved in determining multidimensional dengue could guide the integrated management of actions of a disease control program, coordinated by the several sectors involved.

Abstract: over the last ten years, organized civil society has gained a growing presence in the discussion, formulation and implementation of public policies in brazil. representing a mosaic of multi-faceted institutions endowed with a singular capacity to implement local actions from a global perspective, we focus particularly on environmentalist ngos that act in the bay of guanabara, an estuary of great importance for the state of rio de janeiro that is subjected to aggression on a daily basis. our findings indicate that several projects on environmental preservation or recuperation that have been developed with the participation of these ngos mobilize volunteers and the media, sensitize the population to ecological issues and contribute to the education of low income urban communities, providing guidelines for a holistic relationship between humans and the environment and constituting new social actors. in this way, they provide more efficient means for public intervention in the recovery of the environmental quality of the estuary's eco-systems.

Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692010000200008
Abstract: the right to practice the peripherally inserted central catheter (picc) technique, mainly in neonatal intensive care units, was achieved by nursing and consists of efforts that lead to a new challenge: the improvement of the practice of this procedure. this study determined and evaluated the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired by nurses in qualification courses concerning aspects of picc line insertion in the case of newborns. this descriptive and quantitative study used a questionnaire with nine questions to collect data. the study population was composed of 40 nurses qualified to insert a picc line in newborns. according to the conceptual knowledge scale established for this study, the results reveal that the nurses have inadequate knowledge concerning the studied aspects, indicating the need for nurses to constantly update and improve their knowledge about this practice so as to better the quality of care delivered to newborns.
