Abstract: It is a generally acknowledged fact that the dynamics of frontier advance deeply influenced the broad experience of American post colonial societies. The colonization, which started most from the east boundaries of the continent, appropriated and gradually transformed the American territories from east to west. The advance, initially represented by the arrival of the European settlers, went on to become an important trace of that society which did not come to know any physical limits of a restricted territory. However, despite the common identity granted by these territorial dynamics, the later developments and consequences seem to have shaped differently the Northern representatives from their Southern counterparts. In addition, the interpretation of these facts bore in each of these regions different meanings and traits.

Psicologia USP , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-65642003000200009
Abstract: the purpose of this article is to present the authors' effort of synthesizing research material on palliative care as well as the bibliography studied. firstly, some considerations about palliative care in two structurally different countries, brazil and france, are presented. the discussion focuses the authors' research experience at a sida ward in the first country and at an intern medicine ward in the latter, which held cancer and sida patients within a palliative care logic. secondly, aspects related to pain and death are discussed considering concepts of bioethics alongside the relational dimension concerning health care. the concepts pointed out are those of justice, autonomy, beneficence and non-maleficence. in conclusion, we present some possible contributions of ergonomics and work psychodinamics in the palliative care field, taking into special consideration the psychological dimension of this debate.
Molecular Phylogeny of Weakfish Species of the Stellifer Group (Sciaenidae, Perciformes) of the Western South Atlantic Based on Mitochondrial and Nuclear Data

PLOS ONE , 2014, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0102250
Abstract: The phylogenetic relationships within the Stellifer group of weakfishes (Stellifer, Odontoscion, Ophioscion, and Bairdiella) were evaluated using 2723 base pairs comprising sequences of nuclear (rhodopsin, TMO-4C4, RAG-1) and mitochondrial (16S rRNA and COI) markers obtained from specimens of nine species. Our results indicate a close relationship between Bairdiella and Odontoscion, and also that the genus Stellifer is not monophyletic, but rather that it consists of two distinct lineages, one clade containing S. microps/S. naso/S. brasiliensis and the other, S. rastrifer/S. stellifer/Stellifer sp. B, which is closer to Ophioscion than the former clade. The O. punctatissimus populations from the northern and southern Brazilian coast were also highly divergent in both nuclear (0.8% for rhodopsin and 0.9% for RAG-1) and mitochondrial sequences (2.2% for 16S rRNA and 7.3% for COI), which we conclude is consistent with the presence of two distinct species. The morphological similarities of the members of the Stellifer group is reinforced by the molecular data from both the present study and previous analyses, which have questioned the taxonomic status of the Stellifer group. If, on the one hand, the group is in fact composed of four genera (Stellifer, Ophioscion, Odontoscion, and Bairdiella), one of the two Stellifer clades should be reclassified as a new genus. However, if the close relationship and the reduced genetic divergence found within the group is confirmed in a more extensive study, including representatives of additional taxa, this, together with the morphological evidence, would support downgrading the whole group to a single genus. Obviously, these contradictory findings reinforce the need for a more systematic taxonomic revision of the Stellifer group as a whole.
Can Lutjanus purpureus (South red snapper) be "legally" considered a red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus)?
Gomes, Grazielle;Schneider, Horacio;Vallinoto, Marcelo;Santos, Simoni;Orti, Guillermo;Sampaio, Iracilda;
Genetics and Molecular Biology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47572008000200035
Abstract: red snappers (lutjanus purpureus in brazil and lutjanus campechanus in usa and gulf of mexico) are both under clear effect of overfishing. because of their high morphological similarity it has already been suggested that they could possibly be considered as a single species. to investigate the degree of similarity and the genetic structure of red snapper populations we constructed a common dataset of partial d-loop mtdna sequences of l. purpureus from brazil (amapá, pará and maranh?o) and l. campechanus from the atlantic coast of the usa (florida, louisiana and mississippi). phylogenetic and population genetic analyses surprisingly depicted high similarity between l. campechanus and l. purpureus, compatible with the hypothesis of a single species of red snapper for the western atlantic ocean. these preliminary but very curious findings open an important discussion regarding the legislation involved on the capture of this overexploited fish resources as well as regarding their taxonomy.

Abstract: in this work, scanning probe microscopy (spm), in the contact (atomic force microscopy - afm) and magnetic force (magnetic force microscopy - mfm) modes, has been used to analyze the microstructure of a solution-treated and aged 2205 duplex stainless steel. a surface analysis of the solution-treated steel has been performed by afm after passive film growth. by afm it was obtained a indication of film growth on the microstructure of the solution-treated steel, while by mfm the phase distribution could be observed without the need of surface etching.

Abstract: this is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach aimed at understanding how mothers perceived the moment of childbirth and how the actions of the professionals contributed to facilitate their closeness to their babies. twenty-five multiparous women in a public maternity in rio de janeiro who had had low risk, normal labor deliveries were interviewed. the analysis of the reports revealed that immediate care given to babies away from their mother's view generates in mothers concern, a feeling of distance and fear of being separated from the baby. however, some women valued the interventionist assistance because they believe that this care is indispensable to ensure their child's physical integrity. although they valued closeness to their babies in the immediate post-labor period, the surveyed mothers failed to notice the interference of this initial contact for the establishment of an early bond because of a number of factors, among them social-cultural ones.
Scaling cigars in the Cuban tourism economy
Simoni,Valerio;
Etnográfica , 2009,
Abstract: taking scale as an object of analysis (tsing 2000), this article examines how competing scale-making projects emerge in different layers of the cuban tourism economy. i consider how tourists and cubans interact along contested chains of production and distribution of cigars, and therefore become entangled in bundles of ideas, discourses, practices and materialities. these constitute different scaling propositions on which tourists and cubans converge or diverge, and which inform the success of encounters within the tourism economy. highlighted is the importance of understanding how scaling propositions are enacted and negotiated within tourism. i conclude that the realm of tourism is a particularly fruitful platform to investigate how competing scale-making projects and notions of scale are played out in the contemporary world.

Abstract: An electrolysed solution of sodium chloride was examined for its disinfection potential in drinking and bathing water. The electrolysis of NaCl ((=1%) in tap water was performed at room temperature using a 10 A electric current in an electrolysis apparatus. Some laboratory tests were made, initially to determine the stability and efficiency of the disinfectant. Chemical and microbiological measurements of the treated water (according to DIN 19643 for bathing water) were then carried out before and after addition of the disinfectant agent.
