Messenger in The Barn: networking in a learning environment
Malcolm Rutter
Research in Learning Technology , 2009, DOI: 10.3402/rlt.v17i1.10862
Abstract: This case study describes the use of a synchronous communication application (MSN Messenger) in a large academic computing environment. It draws on data from interviews, questionnaires and student marks to examine the link between use of the application and success measured through module marks. The relationship is not simple. Total abstainers and heavy users come out best, while medium level users do less well, indicating the influence of two factors. The discussion section suggests possible factors. The study also highlights the benefits of support and efficiency of communication that the application brings. Although there have been many studies of synchronous communication tool use in the office and in social life, this is one of the first to examine its informal use in an academic environment.
Tutorial chat: a case study of synchronous communication in a learning environment

Research in Learning Technology , 2006, DOI: 10.3402/rlt.v14i2.10954
Abstract: This case study describes the use of a web-based synchronous chat application, run during computing tutorials. The chat room was moderated by a paid demonstrator, who assisted and encouraged students whenever possible. Most of the discussion was banter, which acted as a lubricant for relevant factual communication. Students were permitted a degree of anonymity, but nevertheless learned to treat the facility in a useful manner. The application and its mode of employment were found to be both motivating and supportive. Use was evaluated by questionnaire and an analysis of student input. As a result of the experience, it is suggested that abuse will certainly occur and may be minimised by technical improvements, but never eliminated. The Rogerian approach adopted was found to have transferred emphasis from teaching a topic to the learning of generic skills.

The integration of GPS, vegetation mapping and GIS in ecological and behavioural studies
Rutter, Steven Mark;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982007001000007
Abstract: global positioning system (gps) satellite navigation receivers are increasingly being used in ecological and behavioural studies to track the movements of animals in relation to the environments in which they live and forage. concurrent recording of the animal's foraging behaviour (e.g. from jaw movement recording) allows foraging locations to be determined. by combining the animal gps movement and foraging data with habitat and vegetation maps using a geographical information system (gis) it is possible to relate animal movement and foraging location to landscape and habitat features and vegetation types. this powerful approach is opening up new opportunities to study the spatial aspects of animal behaviour, especially foraging behaviour, with far greater precision and objectivity than before. advances in gps technology now mean that sub-metre precision systems can be used to track animals, extending the range of application of this technology from landscape and habitat scale to paddock and patch scale studies. as well as allowing ecological hypotheses to be empirically tested at the patch scale, the improvements in precision are also leading to the approach being increasing extended from large scale ecological studies to smaller (paddock) scale agricultural studies. the use of sub-metre systems brings both new scientific opportunities and new technological challenges. for example, fitting all of the animals in a group with sub-metre precision gps receivers allows their relative inter-individual distances to be precisely calculated, and their relative orientations can be derived from data from a digital compass fitted to each receiver. these data, analyzed using gis, could give new insights into the social behaviour of animals. however, the improvements in precision with which the animals are being tracked also needs equivalent improvements in the precision with which habitat and vegetation are mapped. this needs some degree of automation, as vegetation mapping at
La transformación transatlántica de la monja alférez
Revista de Estudios Sociales , 2007,
Abstract: catalina de erauso's story, la historia de la monja alférez escrita por ella misma / catalina de erauso recounts her adventures as a man, her later confession of being a woman and virgin, her pension from the king, and even the pope's legitimization of her dressing as a man. the author examines this text in terms of its contribution and resistance to the construction of gender in spain and the spanish american colonies in the early 17th century. the transatlantic voyages open a space in which the figure of catalina de erauso transits from one gender category to another. with an emphasis on the prefix 'trans', reading the text through the lens of the 'transsexual' narrative creates new borders and limits, and accentuates the text as a site of struggle over gender identity. the 'transsexual' narrative can help us see the text not only as a site of transition and combination of social categories, but also for interrupting the binary structure of sex and gender that appears so natural today.

Can professionalism be measured?: evidence from the pharmacy literature
Rutter PM,Duncan G
Pharmacy Practice (Granada) , 2010,
Abstract: The need to ensure the future pharmacy workforce demonstrates professionalism has become important to both pharmacy educators and professional bodies. Objective: To determine the extent to which Schools of Pharmacy have taught or measured student professionalism. Methods: Review of the healthcare literature on teaching of professionalism at an undergraduate levelResults: Two-hundred and thirty one papers were retrieved but only 45 papers related specifically to pharmacy. Of these a further 25 were narrative in nature and did not report any findings. Nineteen papers were reviewed (one was excluded as it reported the same data). Papers could be broadly categorised in to those that have tried to create a tool to measure professionalism, those that are in effect pedagogical evaluations of new initiatives or longitudinal studies on student perceptions toward aspects of professionalism. Conclusion: A growing body of literature exists on pharmacy and professionalism. However, to date, very few Schools of Pharmacy appear to formally teach it let alone assess students’ acquisition of professionalism.
De La Tradición Al Entusiasmo, Otras Perspectivas De Una historia.

Revista de Estudios Sociales , 2002,
Abstract: Women are increasingly expressing their account of historical events in cultural productions such as novels and memoirs. This article examines a text by Laura Restrepo as an example of women shaping the narrative of the peace process in Colombia. Through the use of a feminine voice a distinct perspective of historical events in Colombia disrupts in the official and supposedly objective account of History.
