Necrophagous species of Diptera and Coleoptera in northeastern Brazil: state of the art and challenges for the Forensic Entomologist
Vasconcelos, Simo D.;Araujo, Manuela C. S.;
Revista Brasileira de Entomologia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0085-56262012005000014
Abstract: inventories on necrophagous insects carried out in brazil encompass mostly species from the southeastern and central-western regions of the country. this review aims to produce the first checklist of necrophagous diptera and coleoptera species of forensic relevance in northeastern brazil, an area that concentrates high rates of homicides. we performed a literature survey on scientific articles, theses and dissertations regarding necrophagous insect species in the region, and contacted scientists who develop research on forensic entomology. fifty-two species of diptera belonging to eight families with previous record of necrophagy were reported in the region: sarcophagidae, calliphoridae, muscidae, fanniidae, piophilidae, phoridae, anthomyiidae and stratiomyidae. coleopteran species from six families of forensic relevance were registered, although taxonomical identification remained superficial. bait traps were the most frequent methodology used, followed by collection on animal carcasses. seven dipteran species from two families were registered on human cadavers. all species had been previously reported in other brazilian states and/or other countries, although none has been effectively used in legal procedures in the region. the status of research on forensic entomology in northeastern brazil is incipient, and the checklist produced here contributes to the knowledge on the local diversity of necrophagous insects.

Ceramica , 2003,

Ceramica , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0366-69132003000400007
Abstract: the purpose of this work was to study and prepare sno2-based dense ceramics doped with coo and ta2o5 and different concentrations of pr2o3. the systems displayed high values of relative density and nonohmic properties. the addition of pr2o3 caused the number of effective barriers of the systems to increase, improving the value of the nonlinear coefficient, and increasing the breakdown electric field. the height and the width of the potential barriers, which were determined by impedance spectroscopy measurements, indicated that the results are in agreement with the direct current response.

International Journal of Clinical Medicine (IJCM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijcm.2014.512088

Objective: To demonstrate the feasibility of inguinal hernia repair with local anesthesia in an out-patient regime, with safety, efficacy and short learning curve. Methods: We prospectively evaluated 1186 patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis between November 2004 and March 2014. Of the total number of hernias surgically treated in this period, 755 were operated on the right, 394 on the left and 37 bilateral. We used clinical, surgical and psychosocial criteria for inclusion in the procedure. The parameters for exclusion were complex, irreducible or recurrent hernia, obesity (BMI greater than 30 kg/m2), patient’s refusal and psychiatric disorder. All patients underwent elective surgery and were analyzed regarding surgical outcome, complications and hospital stay. Results: All operations were completed successfully. In no case there was a need to change the anesthetic method. Surgical time was similar to that conducted with other methods of anesthesia and there were no cases of adverse effects of local anesthetics. Intra-operative complications amounted to approximately 2.64%. There was no need for hospital admissions greater than 24 hours. Conclusion: The procedure is feasible and causes no perioperative significant pain, is safe, can be performed by residents under supervision, has satisfactory patient acceptance and complications similar to those observed in a conventional herniorrhaphy, allowing lower time and cost of hospitalization and faster access to treatment.

Social scientists and public administration in the Lula da Silva government
Araujo,Maria Celina D'; Lameir?o,Camila;
Brazilian Political Science Review (Online) , 2009,
Abstract: we focus here on a new theme among studies on the social sciences in brazil, namely, the presence of social scientists in high-level office in the federal government, whether as directors or advisers. in general, studies on the social sciences in brazil are devoted to examining the academic profile of their founders, the contents prioritized in the disciplines, processes of institutionalization and methodologies adopted, among other aspects. however, there has never been an examination of the place of the social scientist in the division of labour of the state bureaucracy, in the market and close to those in power. by means of empirical research, we have ascertained that individuals with this academic background have a notable presence in the lula da silva government (2003-2006; 2007- ). our hypothesis is that this presence cannot be explained chiefly by the specificity of the knowledge produced by this set of disciplines. instead, one has to look at other variables, especially social scientists' link with the public service.
A arquitetura, o corpo e o espelho sobre a beleza e o tempo na arte do Renascimento e em nossos dias
D'Agostino, Mário Henrique Simo;
Tempo Social , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20702003000100007
Abstract: the revival of the old ideal of "eternal fame" and "perpetuity" in art allows for a new conceptual framing of the classical principle of mimesis, in the renaissance. asserting the preeminence of architecture over all the other arts, various renaissance papers link the making of beautiful works to the longevity of the buildings (chrysolaras, alberti, filarete, cesariano, among others). the curatorship and the exemplary value of the monuments, coordinated to the norm of imitating the antichi, bring about different doctrinarian positions on the meaning of time in art to regulate classicisms up to the 18th century. on the other hand, by looking back on the challenges issued then allows one to make a more removed and critical appraisal on the diffuse "cult" of time and beauty, currently in fashion.

Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-91992010000200014
Abstract: accidents involving toad poisoning are frequent and dogs are the most common victims; they become poisoned by biting or ingesting a toad. when released in the organism, the venom is absorbed by both the oral mucosa and the digestive tract, initiating its toxic action. the aim of this work was to evaluate the clinical and electrocardiographic aspects of dogs subjected to experimental toad poisoning, as well as their response to treatment with propranolol. twenty dogs were divided into two groups, a control group (n = 5) and a poisoned group (n = 15). after general anesthesia, the control group received a placebo, while the poisoned group received a venom aliquot through an orogastric tube. results were tested through multivariate analysis (p < 0.05). the animals in the poisoned group had gastrointestinal symptoms including emesis, intense salivation, hyperemic or congested oral mucosa and pasty diarrhea. non-responsive mydriasis, nystagmus, depression, stupor, tachypnea, opisthotonus and ataxia were also manifested by 100% of the poisoned animals. affected dogs had an increase in blood pressure, statistically significant throughout study. five poisoned animals developed ventricular tachycardia and were treated with propranolol (0.5 mg/kg iv). all propranolol-treated animals returned to normal sinus rhythm, which evidences the efficacy of this drug to treat ventricular arrhythmias caused by toad venom.
Dificuldades no diagnóstico de infec??o primária atípica por HIV-1. Relato de um caso: case report
Casseb, Jorge Simo do Rosário;Caterino-de-Araujo, Adele;
Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 1994, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46651994000300015
Abstract: several cases of primary hiv-1 infection are not identified, either because the diagnosis is not suspected or because they test negative for hiv-1 antibody. this work presents an uncommon case of primary hiv-1 infection in an young parenteral drug abuser man, who presented symptoms of acute hepatitis. during the initial acute phase the serum sample of the patient tested negative for the presence of antibodies against several viruses, including hiv-1. nevertheless, the diagnosis of primary hiv-1 infection was suspected by using an alternative method for"in vitro" induced antibody production (iviap), and confirmed by p24 antigen serum positivity and seroconversion in serial plasma samples of the patient. the authors suggest the use of the iviap and others complementary assays to help the diagnosis of acute hiv-1 infection in persons at high risk conditions.
