Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502007000700015
Abstract: purpose: the objective of this study was to evaluate the use of the sugarcane biopolymer membrane in femoral artery patch angioplasty on dogs. methods: eight dogs were submitted to bilateral femoral artery patch angioplasty with a sugarcane biopolymer membrane patch on one side and e-ptfe patch on the contralateral side. this research was performed at experimental surgical research laboratory of the centro de ciências da saúde at universidade federal de pernambuco. the dogs were submitted to a new surgery at 180 days after the patch angioplasty in order to harvest the femoral artery. all the animals were evaluated by: clinical examination, measure of femoral artery diameter, arteriogram and doppler fluxometry. yet the material harvested was sent to histological study. each animal served as its own control. results: in all vessels of both groups there were no cases of infection, aneurysm formation, rupture or pseudoaneurysm formation and thrombosis. in both groups it was observed a chronic inflammatory reaction with lymphocytes, neutrophils and fibrosis in the outer surface of the patches. it was observed fibrosis in the inner surfaces of all the patches. in e-ptfe patches occurred invasion by fibroblasts. conclusion: the sugarcane biopolymer membrane can be used as a patch in femoral artery angioplasty on dogs.
Um novo substituto vascular: arterioplastia femoral em c?es com remendo de membrana de biopolímero de cana-de-a?úcar - avalia??o hemodinamica e histopatológica

Abstract: background: achievement of an ideal arterial substitute to be used in the reconstruction of small- and medium-caliber arteries is still the main objective of most scientific research studies developed in the area of vascular substitutes. sugarcane biopolymer membrane could be extremely useful to perform vascular reconstruction in arteries with diameter smaller than 4 mm, allowing treatment of diseases that affect millions of people in brazil and worldwide. objective: to evaluate the hemodynamic and histopathologic behavior of sugarcane biopolymer membrane when used as a patch in femoral artery angioplasty in dogs. method: eight adult mongrel dogs, under general anesthesia, underwent percutaneous doppler velocimetry of the left and right femoral arteries for preoperative control at the health sciences center experimental research laboratory of universidade federal de pernambuco. after being disinfected, the dogs underwent femoral artery patch angioplasty using a sugarcane membrane biopolymer patch on the left side and an expanded ptfe (e-ptfe) patch on the right side. the dogs underwent daily clinical evaluation for the first week and weekly thereafter. clinical evaluation consisted of an examination of femoral artery pulses, gait assessment and verification as to whether there was any pulsatile tumor, bruising, hemorrhage or surgical wound infection. one hundred and eighty days after the angioplasties, percutaneous doppler velocimetry of the femoral arteries was performed under general anesthesia. next, the dogs underwent dissection of the femoral arteries, measurement of the arterial diameter and perioperative doppler velocimetry proximally and distally to the artery angioplasty. laparotomy was then performed to expose the abdominal aorta for angiographic access. the femoral artery segments with patches were harvested for histopathologic analysis, and the animals were sacrificed under a toxic dosage of anesthetic. results: at 180 days, no cases of surgical wound in
Aneurisma verdadeiro bilateral de artéria tibial posterior

Abstract: this article reports a case of true bilateral aneurysm of the tibial posterior artery in a 57 year-old patient. the aneurysms occurred at different times. the clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of this case are discussed. this report is important because the authors did not find a similar description in the literature.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the sensitivity of the interstitial lymphoscintigraphy in the visualization of the thoracic duct confluence. method: we analyzed 535 lymphoscintigraphies performed at the nuclear medicine department of the hospital das clínicas at the universidade federal de pernambuco from 1993 to 1999. all tests were performed through the subcutaneous injection, in the first interdigital space of each foot, of 1 ml of the dextran 500 labeled with technetium-99m. mresults: the thoracic duct confluence was visualized in 424 patients, which represent 79.3% of the lymphoscintigraphies performed. considering the gender, the thoracic duct confluence was visualized in 191 females patients (77% of the cases) and in 233 males patients (80.9% of the cases). conclusion: this report confirms the importance of the interstitial lymphoscintigraphy as the test choice for the assessment of the lymphatic circulation and demonstrates that this test has a high sensitivity to visualize the thoracic duct confluence.

Abstract:

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of oral functions and oral conditions in children and adolescents with overweight or obesity, investigating possible associations with treatment for weight reduction. Developing a cross-sectional research and quantitative approach with inductive and descriptive and critical analysis of data, such as from a range of 95%, the universe was represented by children and adolescents who were overweight or obese, in both sexes, treated at reference centers for the treatment of obesity by the National Health System, in Campina Grande, Paraíba, 2010-2012. As the control group considered subjects of the same age, in the process of screening for attention in the places listed, but without the condition of overweight or obese, the research was started after the approval by the Ethics Resarch Committee of the UEPB under the protocol number 0513.0.133.000-09. As instruments for data collection were used in the questionnaire and clinical examination, of the 70 surveyed, most were female, ranging in age from 3 to 17 years, overweight, without comorbidities and carriers of deleterious oral habits; especially the nail biting, significantly associated with female sex p < 0.05. Consistency was the preferred food paste and chewing quickly, unilaterally, without discomfort or gagging constant. There was a significant difference between the values of the DMFT index, the presence of visible biofilm and the frequency of halitosis, for groups with overweight or obesity, with association between time of treatment and medications.

Apropria??o social da ciência na idade da tecnologia

Interciencia , 2002,
Abstract: the impact of high technologies available to an ever increasing number of people leads us to reflect upon the present role of science dissemination. the social appropriation has increased the gap between a reduced and select group of people and the masses at large who, however, utilize the technology without any commitment to its consecuences. the present work aims at the analysis of the present situation and proposes a new function for the science dissemination programs.

Anuário do Instituto de Geociências , 2009,
Abstract: Based a reflection about the different approaches of science popularization of the XX century we propose a new role that should be achieved in the present, when the society fastly appropriates new technologies. An analogy between European society of the XVIII century questions is presented with present environmental impact questions due to the continuous consumption is presented. We propose that knowledge socialization is the purpose of science popularization. This knowledge socialization is understand as an integration process of the citizen in the society, leading to conducts, behaviors and attitudes as a function of habits, norms and beliefs originated in the social group identity. This new role of science popularization characterizes a technological contract.

Henrique Lins de Barros
Exacta , 2006,
Abstract: The lifework of Santos-Dumont is an important mark in 20th Century, once it has accelerated the aeronautics development. In less than ten years, the Brazilian flyer has got to solve two problems which afflicted the inventors: the balloons maneuverability, a challenge since the 18th Century, and the flight of the airplane, which had concentrated the efforts of important scientists and engineers. Santos-Dumont s biography shows the trajectory of a useful and creative inventor who, giving his contributions to aeronautical progress, applied himself, worked perseveringly, to the popularization of the human flight. At the end of his life, depressed, committed suicide. His conquests transformed him into a national hero; despite very honored is relatively little known. In the centenary of the history s first homologated flight, the 14-bis flight, it s opportune to bend over his history and to understand the ways of invention.
