Abstract: Background: Prevalence of Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) is decreasing in developed countries since the use of the treatments for eradication of Helicobacter pylori. Objectives: To revalue the sociodemographic, clinical and evolutionary aspects of the PUD among hospitalized patients in CHUYO. Methodology: This prospective study is related to 65 files of patients hospitalized in hepato-gastroenterology and general surgical services of the CHUYO between March 1st and August 31st, 2015. Results: Hospital utilization rate was 6.59%. The average age of patients was 40.6 years with extremes of 17 and 80 years. The sex ratio was 9.8. The location of the ulcer was 69.23% in stomach. A notion of taking aggressive gastrointestinal products was found in 62 patients (95.4%). The clinical picture was represented by diffuse abdominal pain (76.92%), peritoneal irritation syndrome (64.61%) and epigastric pain (56.92%), anemia (23.07%). Gastric perforations (64.61%) and gastrointestinal bleeding (12.30%) were the main complications. Consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was found in 81.5% of cases. The management was medical and/or surgical with an overall mortality rate of 7.7%. Conclusion: The PUD rate decreased from 10.12% to 6.59% in 5 years. The complications are dominated by stomach perforations. They are relative increase and seem related to NSAIDs. Better management of this disease requires awareness of the population to self-medication.

A New Analytical Model for the Analysis of Economic Processes  [PDF]
Paolo Di Sia
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2013.34041

In this work it is presented a new powerful model, well checked in the last years with the analysis of the dynamics of nano-bio-structures. The model permits the detailed study of the dynamical evolution of systems also at macro-level, offering analytical relations concerning the velocity and the distance of an economic variable, so as its diffusion in time; it permits the analysis of economic processes in general. In this paper it will be focused in particular about economic cycles.

La Macédoine des Jeunes-Turcs et l’hellénisme à travers la presse grecque : 1908-1910 Hellenism and the Young Turks Macedonia through the Greek newspapers 1908-1910 Ο αγ να για τη μακεδονικ γη : να ελληνικ σχ διο του 1909

Cahiers Balkaniques , 2012,
Between July 1908 and the beginning of 1910, the Greek press, towards the Young Turks, from enthusiasm changed to suspicion and radical criticism. Its first hopes are in a liberty and equality allowing to the helleno-ottomanism a greek-turkish domination which could push away any bulgarian hold over Macedonia, that is to say the main concern of Greek nationalists in 1908. In spring 1909, the Greek press understands that “helleno-ottomanism” may lead to “turkism”, its enthusiasm for the Young Turks soon and quickly falls down, salvation won’t come from “ottomanism” but from Greece itself and from its military preparation versus the Turks, for ever “barbarians”. Prevalence and predictors of exclusive breastfeeding among women in Kigoma region, Western Tanzania: a community based cross-sectional study
Tiras Nkala, Sia Msuya
International Breastfeeding Journal , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1746-4358-6-17
Abstract: A cross-sectional study was conducted in March to May 2010 among 402 consenting women, with infants aged 6 to 12 months, from randomly selected households. A questionnaire was used to collect information on demographic characteristics, knowledge of EBF, infant feeding practices, and on HIV status.The prevalence of EBF among women in Kigoma Municipality was 58%. Knowledge of EBF was relatively higher (86%) compared to the practice. In the multivariable analysis, women with adequate knowledge of EBF (AOR 5.4), women who delivered at health facilities (AOR 3.0) and women who had no problems related to breasts, like engorgement/cracked nipples (AOR 6.6) were more likely to exclusively breastfeed compared to others.Prevalence of EBF in Kigoma municipality was slightly higher than the national figure of 41%, however it was way below the EBF prevalence of 90% recommended by the WHO. Strategies that target improving knowledge and skills for lactation management among women, as well as strategies to improve health facility delivery, may help to improve EBF in this setting.Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for the first six months of an infant's life is a cost effective intervention in saving children's lives and it is recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) [1]. EBF means giving only breast milk to the infant, without mixing it with water, other liquids, tea, herbal preparations or food in the first six months of life, with the exception of vitamins, mineral supplements or medicines [1]. It is estimated that, with EBF coverage of 90%, 13 to 15% of deaths of children under 5 years could be averted in low and middle income countries [2]. Exclusively breastfed infants have been shown to have lower rates of acute respiratory infections and diarrhoea, to have better neuro-developmental outcomes and have better physical growth compared to mix-fed or non-breastfed infants [1-6]. In areas where HIV prevalence is high, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, EBF has been shown to ha
Uma brasiliana médica: o Brasil Central na expedi??o científica de Arthur Neiva e Belisário Penna e na viagem ao Tocantins de Julio Paternostro
Lima,sia Trindade;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702009000500011
Abstract: the article addresses the role played within the social imaginary of brazil by the scientific voyages of physicians in the first half of the twentieth century. two texts are analyzed: a report by arthur neiva and belisário penna published in memórias do instituto oswaldo cruz and another, by julio paternostro, released in 1945 in viagem ao tocantins. the former contributed to singling out pathology as the defining mark of national identity during the first republic (1899-1930), a fact that had repercussions in the following decades, as apparent in paternostro's book, which at the time of its publication was presented as an indictment of national problems. these portraits of brazil highlight as attributes of the country not only disease but also the geographic and, primarily, cultural distance separating the coast from the sert?o.
Miss?es civilizatórias da República e interpreta??o do Brasil
Lima,sia Trindade;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59701998000400010
Abstract: the article discusses how journeys into the brazilian interior during the first three decades of the republic played a role in constructing interpretations of brazil underpinned by the notion of contrast between sert?o and coast. this missionary movement heavily imbued with symbolism accompanied official projects in boundary definitions, sanitation, settlement, and economic and political integration. closely associated with the expansion of government presence, it included among its leadership intellectuals informed by scientism and by the ideals of progress identified with the new regime. bearing in mind their impact in the process of casting brazilian social thought, the article discusses representations regarding euclides da cunha?s journey to the region of canudos, immortalized in his classic os sert?es, as well as the representations found in reports by the rondon mission and scientific expeditions sponsored by the instituto oswaldo cruz.
Quando lembrar é amar: tempo, espa?o, memória e saudade nos ritos fúnebres católicos
Reesink,sia Lins;
Etnográfica , 2012,
Abstract: death and the “catholic funeral ritual complex” are events that may inspire ethnographic reflections about the relations between death (particularly its ritual dimension), time, space, memory and saudade. here i want to explore some of these possibilities by looking at the events occurring after the death of catholic people in the casa amarela neighbourhood of recife (brazil). it seems to be possible to establish a structural-temporal relationship between these dimensions and hence to construct different times?/?types of memories based upon, on the one hand, an affective dimension (particularly saudade), and, on the other, a ritual dimension (as in the day of the dead), in the production of the “beloved being”.
Reflexividade Nativa: quando a cren?a dialoga com a dúvida no período de Finados
Reesink,sia Lins;
Mana , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132010000100007
Abstract: analysis of religious reflexivity has becomes increasingly present in the anthropology of religion, in particular investigations into how practices and beliefs the object of reflection of believers and religious groups. here i turn to ethnographic data to explore the ‘dialogue' between doubt, scepticism and belief in the performance of the catholic ritual of all souls' day at cemeteries in recife, especially the ritual lighting of candles. all souls' day provides an ideal context for discussing the reflexive dynamics of doubt-scepticism-belief of catholics living in recife. the ritual and its reflexive implications cannot be understood without taking into account the representations of these believers concerning the relations between the dead, the living and the ‘other world.'
"Rogai por nós": a prece no catolicismo brasileiro à luz do pensamento maussiano
Reesink,sia Lins;
Religi?o & Sociedade , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-85872009000200003
Abstract: the prayer is a ritual phenomenon of fundamental importance within the catholic religious system. an approach inspired by mauss is used here in order to develop an ethnographic analysis of the ritual of prayer as practiced by catholics from the neighbourhood of casa amarela, recife. among other possible modalities, the ritual appears in several modes: simple (as a "minimal gesture"); composite, for example, in the rosary ritual; and, finally, as part of a larger set, as occurs in the relations between the living and the dead where the prayer, in addition to dreams, functions as a communication channel between the living and the dead.
