Exchange Rate and Current Account Dynamics with Habits over Consumption and Money Holdings  [PDF]

Incorporating two independent habits over consumption and money holdings into a small country model, we examine the adjustment dynamics of the current account and the exchange rate to expansionary monetary and fiscal shocks under two alternative policy regimes: (1) the endogenous income transfer regime; and (2) the endogenous fiscal spending regime. In response to the shocks under regime (1), the exchange rate depreciates on impact and in the long run whereas it appreciates (depreciates) in transition if preferences for real money balances exhibit distant (adjacent) complementarity. Under regime (2), the consumption habits and the monetary habits jointly generate possibly non-monotonic current account dynamics. An induced increase in fiscal spending in regime (2) can generate a current account surplus in the case where the monetary habits exhibit strong distant complementarity.

Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy as Guidance for Lateral Neck Dissection in Patients with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: The surgical management of lateral lymph nodes in differentiated thyroid carcinoma is controversies. Therefore, we analyzed whether sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) biopsy of the first draining nodes in the jugulo-carotid chain is an accurate technique to select patients with true-positive but nonpalpable lymph nodes for selective lateral node dissection. Materials and Methods: From January 2009 to December 2009, 12 patients with solitary papillary carcinoma measuring 2 cm by ultrasonography were included in this study. After the thyroid gland was exposed to avoid injuring the lateral thyroid lymphatic connection, approximately 0.2 ml of 5mg/ml indocyanine green was injected into the parenchyma of upper and lower thyroid gland. Some stained lymph nodes in the jugulo-carotid chain could be identified following the stained lymphatic duct and dissected as the SLN. After that, thyroidectomy with modified neck dissection was performed. Results: The mean tumor size was 22.1 ± 4.6 mm. Identification and biopsy of stained SLN in the ipsilateral jugulo-carotid chain was successful in all 12 cases. In 6 cases, histopathological analysis of SLNs revealed metastases of the papillary thyroid carcinoma. Among them, 2 cases had additional metastatic lymph nodes in the ipsilateral compartment. Of the 6 patients who had negative lymph node metastasis (LNM) in SLNs, all patients had negative LNM in the ipsilateral compartment. Conclusions: The method may be helpful in the detection of true-positive but nonpalpable lymph nodes and may support a decision to perform a selective lateral node dissection in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma.
C/EBPβ Promotes Transition from Proliferation to Hypertrophic Differentiation of Chondrocytes through Transactivation of p57Kip2

Abstract: Background Although transition from proliferation to hypertrophic differentiation of chondrocytes is a crucial step for endochondral ossification in physiological skeletal growth and pathological disorders like osteoarthritis, the underlying mechanism remains an enigma. This study investigated the role of the transcription factor CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein β (C/EBPβ) in chondrocytes during endochondral ossification. Methodology/Principal Findings Mouse embryos with homozygous deficiency in C/EBPβ (C/EBPβ?/?) exhibited dwarfism with elongated proliferative zone and delayed chondrocyte hypertrophy in the growth plate cartilage. In the cultures of primary C/EBPβ?/? chondrocytes, cell proliferation was enhanced while hypertrophic differentiation was suppressed. Contrarily, retroviral overexpression of C/EBPβ in chondrocytes suppressed the proliferation and enhanced the hypertrophy, suggesting the cell cycle arrest by C/EBPβ. In fact, a DNA cell cycle histogram revealed that the C/EBPβ overexpression caused accumulation of cells in the G0/G1 fraction. Among cell cycle factors, microarray and real-time RT-PCR analyses have identified the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p57Kip2 as the transcriptional target of C/EBPβ. p57Kip2 was co-localized with C/EBPβ in late proliferative and pre-hypertrophic chondrocytes of the mouse growth plate, which was decreased by the C/EBPβ deficiency. Luciferase-reporter and electrophoretic mobility shift assays identified the core responsive element of C/EBPβ in the p57Kip2 promoter between ?150 and ?130 bp region containing a putative C/EBP motif. The knockdown of p57Kip2 by the siRNA inhibited the C/EBPβ-induced chondrocyte hypertrophy. Finally, when we created the experimental osteoarthritis model by inducing instability in the knee joints of adult mice of wild-type and C/EBPβ+/? littermates, the C/EBPβ insufficiency caused resistance to joint cartilage destruction. Conclusions/Significance C/EBPβ transactivates p57Kip2 to promote transition from proliferation to hypertrophic differentiation of chondrocytes during endochondral ossification, suggesting that the C/EBPβ-p57Kip2 signal would be a therapeutic target of skeletal disorders like growth retardation and osteoarthritis.
Otolith features and growth of juvenile Opsaridium microcephalum (Pisces: Cyprinidae) from the southwestern shoreline of Lake Malawi

Abstract: Sanjika,Opsaridium microcephalum, were collected from two sites (Nkhotakota and Chia) along the southwestern shoreline of Lake Malawi. The sagitta of the otolith was arrowheadshaped with an obvious nucleus. Increments in the sagittae were observable until the bases of the rostra but invisible in the rostra. The asteriscus was oval-shaped with an ambiguous nucleus, leading to difficulty in identifying the first increment. The lapillus was ‘a’-shaped with an obvious nucleus and increments were observable from the nucleus to the margin. The lapillus was therefore considered the most suitable structure for interpreting daily growth increments in this species. The estimated hatching months of fish based on lapilli increment counts were from November to July, suggesting that this species has a long breeding period of at least eight months per year. The growth rate of fish born in the rainy season (0.74mmTL per day) was higher than those in the dry season (0.56mmTL per day). This growth difference was considered to be due to the difference in water temperature in the lake.
Postdiction: its implications on visual awareness, hindsight, and sense of agency

Abstract: There are a few postdictive perceptual phenomena known, in which a stimulus presented later seems causally to affect the percept of another stimulus presented earlier. While backward masking provides a classical example, the flash lag effect stimulates theorists with a variety of intriguing findings. The TMS-triggered scotoma together with “backward filling-in” of it offer a unique neuroscientific case. Findings suggest that various visual attributes are reorganized in a postdictive fashion to be consistent with each other, or to be consistent in a causality framework. In terms of the underlying mechanisms, four prototypical models have been considered: the “catch up,” the “reentry,” the “different pathway” and the “memory revision” models. By extending the list of postdictive phenomena to memory, sensory-motor and higher-level cognition, one may note that such a postdictive reconstruction may be a general principle of neural computation, ranging from milliseconds to months in a time scale, from local neuronal interactions to long-range connectivity, in the complex brain. The operational definition of the “postdictive phenomenon” can be applicable to such a wide range of sensory/cognitive effects across a wide range of time scale, even though the underlying neural mechanisms may vary across them. This has significant implications in interpreting “free will” and “sense of agency” in functional, psychophysical and neuroscientific terms.

Abstract: We investigate $O(N)$-symmetric vector field theories in the double scaling limit. Our model describes branched polymeric systems in $D$ dimensions, whose multicritical series interpolates between the Cayley tree and the ordinary random walk. We give explicit forms of residual divergences in the free energy, analogous to those observed in the strings in one dimension.

Abstract: A box-ball system with more than one kind of balls is obtained by the generalized periodic discrete Toda equation (pd Toda eq.). We study the pd Toda equation in view of algebraic geometry. The time evolution of pd Toda eq. is linearized on an algebraic variety, and theta function solutions are obtained.
Coulomb-gas approach for boundary conformal field theory

Abstract: We present a construction of boundary states based on the Coulomb-gas formalism of Dotsenko and Fateev. It is shown that Neumann-like coherent states on the charged bosonic Fock space provide a set of boundary states with consistent modular properties. Such coherent states are characterised by the boundary charges, which are related to the number of bulk screening operators through the charge neutrality condition. We illustrate this using the Ising model as an example, and show that all of its known consistent boundary states are reproduced in our formalism. This method applies to $c<1$ minimal conformal theories and provides an unified computational tool for studying boundary states of such theories.

Abstract: We investigate the maximum number of embedded patterns in the two-dimensional Hopfield model. The grand state energies of two specific network states, namely, the energies of the pure-ferromagnetic state and the state of specific one stored pattern are calculated exactly in terms of the correlation function of the ferromagnetic Ising model. We also investigate the energy landscape around them by computer simulations. Taking into account the qualitative features of the phase diagrams obtained by Nishimori, Whyte and Sherrington [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 51}, 3628 (1995)], we conclude that the network cannot retrieve more than three patterns.
