Profiling Plasma Peptides for the Identification of Potential Ageing Biomarkers in Chinese Han Adults

Abstract: Advancing age is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and cancer, and shows significant inter-individual variability. To identify ageing-related biomarkers we performed a proteomic analysis on 1890 Chinese Han individuals, 1136 males and 754 females, aged 18 to 82 years, using weak cation exchange magnetic bead based MALDI-TOF-MS analysis. The study identified 44 peptides which varied in concentration in different age groups. In particular, apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA1) concentration gradually increased between 18 to 50 years of age, the levels of fibrinogen alpha (FGA) decreased over the same age span, while albumin (ALB) was significantly degraded in middle-aged individuals. In addition, the plasma peptide profiles of FGA and four other unidentified proteins were found to be gender-dependent. Plasma proteins such as FGA, ALB and ApoA1 are significantly correlated with age in the Chinese Han population and could be employed as indicative ageing-related biomarkers.
Wild food plants and wild edible fungi of Heihe valley (Qinling Mountains, Shaanxi, central China): herbophilia and indifference to fruits and mushrooms

Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate knowledge and use of wild food plants and fungi in Han (i.e. Chinese) nationality villages in central China, including famine plants used in the respondents' childhood. A valley adjacent to the extremely species-rich temperate forest vegetation of the Taibai Nature Reserve was chosen. Eighty-two people from 5 villages took part in the study. Altogether, 159 wild food plant species and 13 fungi folk taxa were mentioned by informants. The mean number of freelisted wild foods was very high (24.8; median – 21.5). An average respondent listed many species of wild vegetables (mean – 17, me- dian – 14.5), a few wild fruits (mean – 5.9 and median – 6) and very few fungi (mean – 1.9, median – 1), which they had eaten. Over 50% of respondents mentioned gathering the young shoots or leaves of Celastrus orbiculatus, Staphylea bumalda and S. holocapra, Caryopteris divaricata, Helwingia japonica, Pteridium aquilinum, Pimpinella sp., Amaranthus spp., Matteucia struthiopteris, Allium spp., Cardamine macrophylla and Chenopodium album. Only one species of fruits (Schisandra sphenanthera) and none of the mushrooms were mentioned by over half of the respondents. Although very diverse, it can be noted that the use of wild vegetables has decreased compared to the second half of the 20th century, as informants listed several plants which they had stopped using (e.g. Abelia engleriana) due to the availability of cultivated vegetables and other foodstuffs. On the other hand, the collection of the most well-known wild vegetables is maintained by selling them to tourists visiting agritourist farms, and restaurants.

Abstract: ased on the linear relationship between GC peak width at half height( W_n ) and retention time(t_r),afurther comparison of RPN with other parameters of GC column efficiency was made, The column hold-uptime(t_0 ) and linear constants(intercept a and slope b)obtained from the relationship between W_n and t_r arevery improtant information related to column efficiency. All of the parameters of column efficiency discussedhere except N_inf are the function of a, b and t_0.N_inf is a limit of theoretical plate numbers at infinite capacity and is related only to the slope b. Therefore,N_inf is not a good paranleter fOr expressing the column efficien-cy at finite capacity region. With increasing the column temperature, the effective plate number(N_eff)for different capacity ratio(k')exhibited different variation trend.In other words,N_eff possesses an uncertain-ty due to its dependence of k'.The soparate number, TZ_(10), is independent of k'and possesses a definite-meaning correlated to column efficiency. However,its model for peak broadening is simplified.RPN is al-most the same as TZ_(10) but without any simplified treatment. In this point,RPN should be more perfect than TZ_(10) when they are used for comparison of the column efficiency of different columns or at different operating conditions.Different homologous series wereused as the reference series to measure TZ_(10) and RPN. Only small difference between the values(TZ_(10) or RPN)obtained from different homologous series was observed.
Effects of Indigenous Innovation Policy on the S & T Outputs in China Evidence from the Higher Education System  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper evaluated the effects of indigenous innovation policies changes in 1996 and 2002 on the S&T outputs in the Chinese higher education system. I used interrupted time series design with yearly measures of number of SCI articles, average citation per item in 5 years, number of invention patent application accepted and invention patent granted from 1980 to 2008. The results showed statistically significant increases in the four output measures after the 1996 and 2002 innovation policies were adopted by the Chinese universities. In terms of effect size, the increases were 133% and 82% in number of SCI articles and 41% and 37% in citation impact for the two policy changes. The effect sizes are more noteworthy with 177% and 202% increases in patent applied 146% and 256% increase in patent granted for the two policy changes. The results supported all hypotheses and are basically consisted with prior research done by other scholars. However, small size sample and no control group are the two limitations of this research and future research could consider about the possibility to combine time series data and cross-sector data.

Abstract:

The (2 + 1)-dimensional fifth-order KdV equation is an important higher-dimensional and higher-order extension of the famous KdV equation in fluid dynamics. In this paper, by constructing new test functions, we investigate the periodic solitary wave solutions for the (2 + 1)-dimensional fifth-order KdV equation by virtue of the Hirota bilinear form. Several novel analytic solutions for such a model are obtained and verified with the help of symbolic computation.

Abstract:

The Benjamin-ono (BO) equation is an important nonlinear wave model which can describe the deep oceanic internal wave propagation. In this paper, the multi-algebraic solitary wave solutions for the internal wave BO equation including the linear velocity term in matrix form are given by the bilinear form. Based on the analytic solutions of the BO equation obtained in this paper and considering the hydrological parameters, the propagation of one-solitary wave and different kinds of interaction for the two-solitary waves are discussed and illustrated.

Research on Financial Early Warning of Listed Corporation Based on SOM Fusion BP Neural Network  [PDF]

Abstract: Combining with the special environment of Chinese market, this paper defines the listed Corporation’s financial crisis, and analyzes the shortcomings of the existing financial early warning model. In order to further improve the accuracy of the financial early warning, and adaptively select optimal training samples, short-term forecasting model of listed corporations based on the SOM network fusion BP network is proposed. The model firstly extracts the initial training samples relying on the SOM network and obtains the optimum ST samples and non ST samples in all training samples. Furthermore, the extracted samples are utilized to construct the financial early warning system of five different levels based on SOM network. Finally, the model is compared with other model algorithms. The results show that the financial early-warning model proposed in this paper possesses higher recognition accuracy on short term forecasting and monitoring of enterprise finance compared with other recognition models. Moreover, smaller data size is needed in this model on the premise that the effectiveness is guaranteed. Therefore, the early warning model proposed in this paper can better realize enterprise financial monitoring, so as to effectively prevent and defuse financial risks and crises.

Abstract: In this review, we summarized literatures about biomechanical researches in kayaking. Biomechanic researches provide a number of valuable data of analytical techniques and kayak moving posture for coaches and athletes. 3-D kinematic analysis, on-water dynamic analysis and surface electromyography measurement are the most common methods through which we can describe and assess effects of paddling tech-niques and training. The purposes of numerous current studies are to identify the factors which restrict kayak performance, make improvement of techniques, prevent and correct mistakes, and develop new type of practical instrument. As a result, we found that although researchers realized the importance of kayaking balance ability and core stability, but balance ability and core stability haven’t been considered yet in mechanics analysis and instrument design fields, nor have the research of muscle working status under unsteady state. Based on our novel findings through this literature review, we proposed important directions for further study in biomechanical researches in kayaking.

Abstract:
Concerns about household debt increase with the escalating debt level in developed countries. Australia is a good example of this. This paper applies the dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS) method to explore the determinants and influences of Australian household debt. The results show that the rising Australian household debt results from the increased size of the economy, a booming housing market, a favourable macroeconomic environment and favourable government policies. Although the rising house-hold debt stimulates economic growth in the short run, it may induce economic instability in the long run.
