Sensitive Spectrofluorimetric Method for Determination of Fluoroquinolones through Charge-Transfer Complex Formation  [PDF]
Jasmin Shah, M. Rasul Jan, Inayat Ullah, Sultan Shah
American Journal of Analytical Chemistry (AJAC) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajac.2013.410066
Abstract:

A sensitive spectrofluorimetric method was developed for determination of ciprofloxacin (CPFX), levofloxacin (LEV), gatifloxacin (GAT) and moxifloxacin (MOX) in pure, commercial formulations, human urine and plasma. The method is based on charge-transfer (CT) complex with chloranilic acid. Fluorescence intensity of the complexes was measured at emission wavelength ranging from 445-492 nm with excitation wavelengths from 285-330 nm. At optimum experimental conditions, a linear calibration plot was obtained in the concentration range of 20-1000 ng·mL-1, 60-320 ng·mL-1, 20-800 ng·mL-1 and 20 -00 ng·mL-1 for CPFX, LEV, MOX and GAT, respectively with good correlation coefficient in the range of 0.9929-1.0 in methanolic medium. The limit of detection and limit of quantification were found to be 5 ng·mL-1

Abstract: If is a polynomial of degree , having all its zeros in |z|≤K, K≥1 , then it was proved by Aziz and Rather [2] that for every real or complex number with |a| ≥K, . In this paper, we sharpen above result for the polynomials p(z) of degree n>3
Increased breath ethane and pentane concentrations in currently unmedicated patients with schizophrenia  [PDF]

Abstract: Schizophrenia is a common and debilitating mental illness. The disorder is thought to be developmental in origin, with oxidative stress being implicated as possible pathophysiological mechanism. Breath alkanes provide a non-invasive means to assess oxidative stress, with ethane levels reportedly increased in medicated patients with schizophrenia. It is possible, however, that the psychotropic medications used to treat the disorder result in elevated breath ethane levels. We have therefore measured the concentration of ethane and pentane, markers of oxidative stress, in the breath of currently unmedicated patients with schizophrenia. Alveolar breath samples were collected, applied to thermal desorption tubes, and analyzed using a combination of two-stage thermal de-sorption, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Compared to healthy controls ethane and pentane levels were found to be elevated in patients with schizophrenia, while levels of butane were normal. Our data support the notion that oxidative stress is increased in schizophrenia and that this is unlikely to be a consequence of antipsychotic medications. In addition, breath alkane analysis may represent a rapid and non-invasive means to monitor oxidative stress occurring in schizophrenia.
Some Edge Product Cordial Graphs in the Context of Duplication of Some Graph Elements  [PDF]

Open Journal of Discrete Mathematics (OJDM) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojdm.2016.64021
Abstract: For a graph\"\", a function\"\" is called an edge product cordial labeling of G, if the induced vertex labeling function is defined by the product of the labels of the incident edges as such that the number of edges with label 1 and the number of edges with label 0 differ by at most 1 and the number of vertices with label 1 and the number of vertices with label 0 differ by at most 1. In this paper, we show that the graphs obtained by duplication of a vertex, duplication of a vertex by an edge or duplication of an edge by a vertex in a crown graph are edge product cordial. Moreover, we show that the graph obtained by duplication of each of the vertices of degree three by an edge in a gear graph is edge product cordial. We also show that the graph obtained by duplication of each of the pendent vertices by a new vertex in a helm graph is edge product cordial.
Performance Evaluation of Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antennas Loaded with Plastic and Barium-Titanate Substrates at GSM 1800 MHz Band  [PDF]
Mohammad Ababil Hossain, M. Shah Alam
Open Journal of Antennas and Propagation (OJAPr) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojapr.2018.63004
Abstract:
In this paper, the resonance and radiation characteristics of patch antennas fabricated with two different types of dielectric substrates have been investigated and compared at GSM 1800 MHz band. At first, the above-stated characteristics of a patch antenna loaded with conventional plastic substrate have been investigated. Later a high permittivity dielectric material (barium titanate) has been used as the antenna substrate. The main goal here is to reduce the antenna size with a high permittivity dielectric material and then to compare its resonance and radiation performance with the earlier low permittivity substrate loaded prototype. It is found that with the use of high permittivity substrate the antenna volume gets smaller (about 6% of the plastic substrate prototype) although the gain decreases by around 2.5 dB.
Response of Wheat to Applied Soil Potassium
M. Tariq,M. Shah
Asian Journal of Plant Sciences , 2002,
Abstract: Response of wheat to applied potassium was studied on Peshawar valley soil. Different levels of potassium @ 0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 kg K2O ha -1 along with a basal dose of nitrogen and phosphorus @ 150 kg N and 100 kg P2O5, respectively were applied to wheat. Results showed that yield and yield components of wheat were not significantly affected with potassium fertilization, because the test soil had already sufficient potassium for plant growth and might be some of K+ released from non-exchangeable sources. However, 60 kg K2O ha -1 gave maximum fresh, dry, straw and grain yields and indicated initial level of K2O supplemented with 60 kg K2O ha -1 was sufficient for maximum yields of wheat for the test soil. Potassium uptake by leaves and potassium content of soils at pre heading and post harvesting stages was significantly increased in a linear fashion with increasing applied potassium levels in soil.

Open Journal of Ophthalmology (OJOph) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojoph.2012.24029
Abstract: Purpose: To assess treatment results in pediatric patients with cataracts, to evaluate the efficacy of various surgical interventions, and to determine the factors that affect visual outcomes. Methods: This is aProspective cohort study. We studied a consecutive series of pediatric patients with congenital, developing, or traumatic cataracts who underwent surgery between January, 1999 and April, 2012 at Drashti Netralaya, Dahod. Patient demographics, cataract type, presenting symptoms, surgical intervention, postoperative visual acuity, and follow-up refractive changes were recorded. Results: In total, 1305 eyes of 1047 children were included: unilateral cataracts were present in 786 (60.2%) eyes. There were 610 (46.7%) traumatic and 695 (53.3%) non-traumatic cases. Ages at surgery ranged from 1 to 215 months. Eyes were grouped by the surgical intervention performed: Group 1, pars plana approach including 366 (28%) eyes that underwent lensectomies, and Group 2, anterior approach, including 939 (71.9%) eyes that underwent phacoemulsification ± IOL placement or small incision cataract surgery ± IOL placement. The mean follow-up time was 117 days. Ultimately, 113 (30.9%) Group 1 and 503 (53.6%) Group 2 patients achieved a visual acuity better than 20/60 (P < 0.001). Age at intervention, laterality, sensory nystagmus, pretreatment vision, IOL insertion, and etiology were all significantly related (all P < 0.001) to visual outcome. Conclusions: Surgical treatment with intraocular lens implantation for children with congenital, developmental, or traumatic cataracts is an effective treatment for visual rehabilitation. Visual outcome was significantly better in cases of traumatic cataracts versus non-traumatic cataracts.
